Download or read book Applications of Viscoelastic Fluids Involving Hydrodynamic Stability and Heat Transfer written by Ildebrando Pérez-Reyes and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rayleigh and Marangoni convection and rheology are linked in the thermal convection of viscoelastic fluids to some recent technological applications. Such technology developments as the ones presented here undoubtedly shall be based on interdisciplinary projects involving not only rheology or fluid mechanics but several other disciplines. Three practical applications which use Rayleigh or Marangoni convection in their working principle are presented along with some technical details. This contribution focus mainly on the physical mechanism and the involved hydrodynamics of some lab and industrial applications. Finally, a short discussion on the role play by the convective mechanisms is given in order to provide integration of the exposed ideas.

Book Stability of Fluid Motions II

Download or read book Stability of Fluid Motions II written by D. D. Joseph and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of stability aims at understanding the abrupt changes which are observed in fluid motions as the external parameters are varied. It is a demanding study, far from full grown, whose most interesting conclusions are recent. I have written a detailed account of those parts of the recent theory which I regard as established. Acknowledgements I started writing this book in 1967 at the invitation of Clifford Truesdell. It was to be a short work on the energy theory of stability and if I had stuck to that I would have finished the writing many years ago. The theory of stability has developed so rapidly since 1967 that the book I might then have written would now have a much too limited scope. I am grateful to Truesdell, not so much for the invitation to spend endless hours of writing and erasing, but for the generous way he has supported my efforts and encouraged me to higher standards of good work. I have tried to follow Truesdell's advice to write this work in a clear and uncomplicated style. This is not easy advice for a former sociologist to follow; if I have failed it is not due to a lack of urging by him or trying by me. My research during the years 1969-1970 was supported in part by a grant from the Guggenheim foundation to study in London.

Book Stability in Viscoelasticity

Download or read book Stability in Viscoelasticity written by A.D. Drozdov and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 623 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of stability problems for viscoelastic solids and elements of structures, with which this book is concerned, has been the focus of attention in the past three decades. This has been due to the wide inculcation of viscoelastic materials, especially polymers and plastics, in industry. Up-to-date studies in viscoelasticity are published partially in purely mathematical journals, partially in merely applied ones, and as a consequence, they remain unknown to many interested specialists. Stability in Viscoelasticity fills the gap between engineers and mathematicians and converges theoretical and applied directions of investigations. All chapters contain extensive bibliographies of both purely mathematical and engineering works on stability problems. The bibliography includes a number of works in Russian which are practically inaccessible to the Western reader.

Book Finite Element Calculations of Viscoelastic Fluid Flow in a Spinning and Nutating Cylinder

Download or read book Finite Element Calculations of Viscoelastic Fluid Flow in a Spinning and Nutating Cylinder written by S. Rosenblat and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 91 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation has been performed of the flow of a non-Newtonian liquid in a spinning and nutating cylinder. An approximate analysis has been effected on the assumption that the radio of coning rate to spin rate is small and applied to the case of a cylinder of infinite length. A numerical calculation has been performed for the actual flow of two specified non- Newtonian liquids, using the finite element code FIDAP. Results are presented in both graphical and tabular form showing flow fields and calculated values of the despin moment for ranges of parameters. The question of appropriate representation of the liquid's non-Newtonian behavior is discussed. Keywords: Liquid Filled Projectiles; Flight Stability; Aeroballistics; Viscoelastic Fluids.

Book The Stability of Viscoelastic Fluids in Complex Flows

Download or read book The Stability of Viscoelastic Fluids in Complex Flows written by Jonathan Philip Rothstein and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: (Cont.) A large extra pressure drop above that measured for a similar Newtonian fluid is documented and found to correlate to the stress-conformation hysteresis observed in transient uniaxial extension measurements. Laser Doppler velocimetry, particle image velocimetry and flow induced birefringence are used to investigate the global kinematics upstream of contraction-expansions of various contraction ratios and degrees of re-entrant corner curvature. For a contraction ratio of beta=2 a steady elastic lip vortex is observed whereas for 4

Book Computational Rheology

Download or read book Computational Rheology written by Robert G Owens and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2002-05-29 with total page 437 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Modern day high-performance computers are making available to 21st-century scientists solutions to rheological flow problems of ever-increasing complexity. Computational rheology is a fast-moving subject — problems which only 10 years ago were intractable, such as 3D transient flows of polymeric liquids, non-isothermal non-Newtonian flows or flows of highly elastic liquids through complex geometries, are now being tackled owing to the availability of parallel computers, adaptive methods and advances in constitutive modelling.Computational Rheology traces the development of numerical methods for non-Newtonian flows from the late 1960's to the present day. It begins with broad coverage of non-Newtonian fluids, including their mathematical modelling and analysis, before specific computational techniques are discussed. The application of these techniques to some important rheological flow problems of academic and industrial interest is then treated in a detailed and up-to-date exposition. Finally, the reader is kept abreast of topics at the cutting edge of research in computational applied mathematics, such as adaptivity and stochastic partial differential equations. All the topics in this book are dealt with from an elementary level and this makes the text suitable for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as experienced researchers from both the academic and industrial communities.

Book Some Problems in the Stability of Flows of Viscoelastic Fluids

Download or read book Some Problems in the Stability of Flows of Viscoelastic Fluids written by Pijush Kanti Kundu and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Three problems in the stability of viscoelastic flows have been theoretically investigated. The case of plane Couette flow has been solved by the classical energy method of Orr. For two-dimensional disturbances of any magnitude the presence of elasticity has been found to stabilize the flow. This result suggests that the viscous sublayer thickness must increase during the so-called Toms phenomenon. It has been found that the results are identical for three fluids, namely the second-order fluid and the Walters fluids A' and B', although the normal stress behavior of these fluids are quite different. This insensitivity to the constitutive equation has been shown to be a result of the two-dimensionality of the problem. Linear stability theory has been used to investigate the stability of two flows of the Oldroyd fluid, namely the plane Poiseuille flow and the circular Couette flow. For both flows the presence of elasticity has been found to destabilize the flow and to increase the critical wavenumber.
