Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of General Philosophy Mr. Thomas Whittaker when going through the proofs. I am also indebted for kind advice and cordial help to Professor Knight. Excepting the full draft of an Introductory Lecture on the History of Philosophy, which has been collated with students' note-books to form Lectures III-VI, the-author's own materials have been wrought up almost wholly in Part II. For instance, in the concluding three lectures on Kant they practically superseded my having recourse to reports of college lectures. It so happened that, although the professor had more than once had occasion to give college lectures on this subject, only one set of notes on Kant had come into my hands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Philosophy: Comprising Logic and Ontology, or General Metaphysics Second: It was judged best, also, for the interests of learn ers in general, to omit the discussion of the modes and figures Of the syllogism; for, in practice they are not attended to, even bv those who actually argue in form, the simple rules of demonstration sufficing for all practical purposes, and being all that IS even really useful in the strictest argumentation. On the other hand, it was deemed expedient to introduce some matters that pertain to branches of Philosophy, whose full treatment is appropriate to another volume; e. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Natural Philosophy Chemistry, or, it may be, doing Physics. He had better be learn ing the conditions under which he lives, irrespective of scholastic pigeon-holes. No doubt, that feeling has prompted the new syllabus for the subject General Elementary Science issued by the University of London, and that for the subject Elementary Physiography in which the Science and Art Department of South Kensington hold examinations. The requirements of both these bodies are met, I hope, though somewhat indirectly, in this course of Natural Philosophy, while they were roughly anti cipated in the earlier book. It appeared to me that independence of treatment was not only desirable in itself, but was probably invited by these authorities. With this feeling I was glad to respond to a suggestion that I should write this book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Elements of Natural Philosophy

Download or read book Elements of Natural Philosophy written by Elias Loomis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-24 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Natural Philosophy: Designed for Academies and High Schools In the present volume I have attempted to exhibit the leading principles of Natural Philosophy in a methodical and scientific form, without any use of the mathematics beyond the first elements of Algebra, Geometry, and Plane Trigonometry. Every principle is enunciated clearly and concisely, and, as far as practicable, I have exhibited the evidence upon which every principle rests. Even when the full demonstration involves an acquaintance with the more difficult parts of the mathematics, I have endeavored to give an outline of the philosophical principles upon which the mathematical demonstration is founded. Those principles which are considered specially important have been printed in italics, so as readily to attract the attention of the pupil. While the leading obj eet has been to teach general principles, care has been taken to combine with them a variety of useful information, and particularly to give an account of many recent discoveries in every branch of the science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Intellectual Philosophy With regard to the style, it has been our constant effort to make it as clear as possible, at the same time that we have tried to be brief. There is hardly a theory laid down which is not illustrated by one or more examples. And we venture to assert that owing to this lucidity of style our Elemenls could be studied, and in great part understood, without a teacher by any young man of parts. We have also, whenever we possibly could, tried to illustrate our theories by quotations from the poets, to loosen the tension of the mind by something pleasing and interesting. At the end Of Ontology we have shown by an abstract of all the natural sciences how they are an application of the principles of Ontology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Physics, Vol. 1 of 2: Or Natural Philosophy, General and Medical, Explained Independently of Technical Mathematics, and Containing New Disquisitions and Practical Suggestions Astronomy, which is the instance chosen above, is only one of innumerable subjects, which, when imperfectly understood, appear obscure and difficult, but when more fully investigated, become simplicity itself. As an exam ple from the studies of medical men may be mentioned the question of the movement of the blood in the veins, which has lately been discussed in medical societies and reviews with considerable earnestness. In this question, the appeal is necessarily made to the laws of Natural Philosophy, which govern the phenomenon; but because the study of these has been little cultivated by the facul ty, more time has been absorbed in futile disputation and experiment than would have sufficed for acquiring a competent knowledge of the whole body of Physics now the single section of Physics, which bears on the point if understood in a moderate degree, would have caused all the difficulties at once to vanish. The circu lation of the blood, again, is but one of numerous and scarcely less important subjects in the medical art to which Natural Philosophy is the easy and only key. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Logic: Together With an Introductory View of Philosophy in General, and a Preliminary View of the Reason Logic ought to exhibit this other way likewise: it ought to inform us how the most original premises arise, and upon what basis they rest. Other methods, indeed, have been abroad in the world, but without being systematically propounded as parts of Logic. Thus, the Platonic philosophy really contains a Logical development of the most original forms of human thought, springing out Of the intuitive faculty. And the Novum Organum Of Bacon contains a logical exposition of the method Of establishing first principles through the Observa tion Of phenomena. This book was released on 2016-08-13 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Physics, or Natural Philosophy, General and Medical, Vol. 2 of 2: Explained Independently of Technical Mathematics; Part I A majority of philosophers now incline to the Opinion here sketched, that there is at least one such subtile uid or ether occupying completely the space of the 'universe, and tend-l ing to uniform diffusion by reason of a strong mutual repulsion of its particles, which uid pervades denser material substances somewhat as water pervades a sponge or a mass of sand, being attracted in a peculiar way by each substance, and which uid may or may not have weight and inertia. They believe far ther that the phenomena above alluded to, and which human art can exhibit with highest beauty, or with awfui intensity, are produced by the motion of other affections of that uid, as the sensation of sound in all its varieties is produced in the delicate structure of the ear by a certain motion in the air, or in any other body, having communication with the ear; or as the sensation ofjar is perceived by a hand held to one end of a log of wood when a blow is given to the other end. Some philosophers again suppose that the causes of the phenomena are material particles projected through space, somewhat as sand might be scattered by an explosion, and which particles are pre sent only when the e ects are apparent. Some combine these two hypotheses. And some hold all the phenomena of heat to be mere motions in the common matter of the bodies in which the heat exists. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Physics, or Natural Philosophy, General and Medical: Written for Universal Use Now the four words, atom, attraction, repulsion, inertia, point to four general truths, which explain the greater part of the phenomena of nature. Being so general, they are called physical truths, from the Greek word signifying nature as also truths of Natural Philosophy, with the same meaning, and sometimes mechanical truths, from their close relation to ordinary machinery. These appellations distinguish them from the remain ing general truths, namely the chemical truths, which regard particular substances, and the vital and mental truths, which have relation only to living beings. And even in the cases where a chemical or vital influence operates, it modifies, but does not destroy, the physical influence. By fixing the attention, then, on these four fundamental truths, the student obtains, as it Were, so many keys to unlock, and lights to illuminate the secrets and treasures of nature. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Greek Philosophy: From Thales to Aristotle We shall expect, then, to find that philosophy is concerned with viewing things in their context and with assigning a right value to them in relation to the whole of that context. Plato defined it as a speculation upon all time and all existence - Oewpia 1rav1'6s pév xpdvou mims 82 eddies Republic, It is concerned with our knowledge as a whole; but before we can define it more precisely we must briefly consider how we come to have any knowledge at all. For man and beast alike the senses are the avenues through which comes know ledge of the external world. Sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell are senses which we share with the lower animals. But man alone can draw general and universal conclusions from the data thus provided. Some animals - dogs, for example - are endowed with a further faculty beyond the sense-perception (aiaenois) which is common to the whole animal kingdom. They remember that the whip smarts, and are capable of visualizing the effects of turning the handle of a door. Roughly Speaking, we may say that, in the scale of animal life.
