Download or read book First Principles of French Pronunciation Classic Reprint written by Emile Saillens and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Principles of French Pronunciation This book is for English-speaking people. It has a three fold object. First, it should serve those general readers or speakers of French whose feeling for the language is such that they will not rest content with a mere rough-and-ready approximation to the way in which it is pronounced by Frenchmen. Secondly, its concern is with teachers and their pupils already devoted to the direct method of modem-language study, as also with those who are liberal enough to give that method a trial. Thirdly, it may furnish a handy epitome of its subject for academic students of French, whose needs must be met more in detail by the advanced investigations of the recognized specialists, and particularly those native to the language. Book Elements of Spoken French Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of Spoken French Classic Reprint written by Maurice N. Kuhn and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-25 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Spoken French Such is the object of the series of handbooks of pronunciation we are now editing. We have tried to analyze as carefully and accurately as possible all the elementary sounds in French, Spanish, English, and German, endeavoring to begin with the sounds that are common to most languages, and gradually introducing those sounds that are peculiar to the language under consideration. Furthermore, we have grouped the words that are more generally used, according to their phonetic similarities, thus relieving the teacher of the necessity of giving a new lesson in pronunciation whenever a new word appears. This grouping of similar sounds must also prove of great assist ance to the student, who will find an opportunity of drilling his vocal organs to utter a certain sound which he will have to repeat a great number of times in succession and in as many different words. Book French Pronunciation

Download or read book French Pronunciation written by James Geddes and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-27 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from French Pronunciation: Principles and Practice and a Summary of Usage in Writing and Printing The path of any one undertaking to furnish a guide to French pronunciation is a thorny one. Nevertheless, despite this fact and the thanklessness of the task, the subject receives, in a variety of forms, some attention annually. Most of this attention is of the obligatory kind and is found in the opening chapter of almost every French grammar that appears. Such treatment, While necessarily concise and brief and generally well adapted to the purpose in view, of introducing the student to the subject, hardly ever goes beyond that goal. Besides the grammars, there are quite a few manuals, or treatises, on pronunciation that appear from time to time, and in their way are helpful to the serious student of the subject, no matter how objectionable he may consider many features in such works. Lastly there are the recent dictionaries, in most Of which the most cursory examination reveals an amount of attention given to the subject of pronuncia tion proportionate to the very considerable interest there in manifested of late years. Book Manual of French Pronunciation and Diction

Download or read book Manual of French Pronunciation and Diction written by J. W. Jack and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of French Pronunciation and Diction: Based on the Notation of the Association Phonetique Internationale The book is essentially a practical one. While it gives the results Of careful study made by distinguished French orthoepists, it does not venture on any theoretical discussion or scientific explanation Of facts. The author has intention ally avoided all such subjects, which would only lead to complication or confusion. As no exposition of pronuncia tion, however, can be sufficient without oral practice, he has added suitable exercises and lists of words wherever necessary. The use of the phonetic system of the Association Phonétique Internationale, now recognized by the highest educational authorities, including the English Board of Education, the Scottish Education Department, and practically all collegiate bodies both in Britain and the United States, will be found Of immense service. The science Of phonetics, which has to do with speech-sounds, not only underlies all language, but is a labour-saving device to the student, turning the com plicated difficulties Of pronunciation into a simple system, and enabling him to accomplish in a few weeks what would otherwise require years. The written language gives only a very imperfect and deceptive idea of the sounds, and the use of reliable phonetics to the language-student is thus indis pensable, being a valuable aid in training both voice and ear. The student should make a persevering practice of the French sounds described in these pages. This is the secret of proper pronunciation. To acquire only a knowledge Of the sounds is insufficient they must be practised until their correct use is second nature. Book A Primer of French Pronunciation Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Primer of French Pronunciation Classic Reprint written by John E. Matzke and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Primer of French Pronunciation With this new edition the Primer of French Pronunciation appears in an entirely new form. Eight years ago, when I prepared the first edition, no phonetic alphabet presented especial claims for adoption, and believing that no distinction ought to be made between the practical and the scientific study of the language in this regard, I selected the alphabet with which students of the history of French are familiar the world over. Since then, however, the Michaelis-Passy Dictionary has been published and the alphabet of the Association Phonetique has been used in such practical books as the Fraser and Squair French Grammar and the recent International French-English Dictionary, so that the choice is really no longer an open one. If we are to succeed in the difficult task of teaching an intelligent pronunciation of the language, we must work in unison. The alphabet of the Association Phonetique is open to criticism, but so are other alphabets as well, and, whatever their final value may be, it certainly is poor method to introduce the discussion into the Freshman class or the High School.
