Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Algebra for Beginners IT 18 becoming more and more evident each year that a pupil receives more culture, makes greater progress in study, and, consequently, is better prepared for life, by beginning algebra early, than by Spending the same amount of time on arithmetic. And when properly presented by both teacher and text-book, the study of algebra has never failed to be interesting and profitable. This book is written with the hope that it may contribute largely toward making algebra both valuable and popular to the young. To accomplish this end we have made the equation the most prominent idea of each chapter. In the first section we have made the transition from arithmetic to algebra so simple and easy that no pupil will experience any difficulty in mastering the elements of the science. A third feature of this book is a clear and logical discus sion of all those processes that throw light and life into the Operations of arithmetic. We express our sincere thanks for the assistance we have received from experienced teachers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The publishers will make every effort to keep the book from pupils; and teachers are urged to exercise the utmost care not to lose their copies, or to leave them where pupils can have access to them. It is hoped that young teachers will derive great advantage from studying the systematic arrangement of the algebraic work, for such attention has been paid to this as the limitation of the page would allow. It is also expected that many teachers, who are pressed for time, will find great relief by not being obliged to work out every problem in the Algebra. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Algebra: A Course for Grammar Schools and Beginners, in Public and Private Schools Algebra has not always proved to be an interesting subject to the younger classes in our secondary or lower schools; indeed, in very many instances it has been greatly disliked by the students in such institutions. Two causes, chiefly, have conspired to produce this unfortunate con dition of affairs, - one the unattractive and uninteresting method of presenting the subject; the other, the difficulty of the examples and the complexity of the problems pre sented to the pupils for solution. It is believed that this text-book presents the elementary facts of the science in such a manner that a deep interest will be awakened in algebraic processes, and that the examples which the student is required to solve are quite within the scope of his ability to master. The author has in several instances departed from the order of classification commonly followed in text-books on algebra, because he has preferred to arouse an interest in the subject rather than to follow an order which is scientific, but which does not introduce the student to the attractive features of the study until he has mastered all the pro cesses employed with most forms of algebraic quantities. Download or read book The Beginner s Algebra Classic Reprint written by Claribel Gerrish and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Beginner's Algebra This book aims to give a working knowledge of elementary algebra. It supposes in the pupil such knowledge of arithmetic as is usually obtained before entrance to the highest grade in the grammar school. It introduces multiplication immediately after addition, and teaches factoring while teaching multiplication. It insures by this arrangement a saving of time, accu racy in the use of signs, and an early familiarity with the structure of those expressions which form the staple of algebra. It treats the equation as derived from the problem. It leads to the problem by exercises in expression and in forming equalities. It helps the pupil to become familiar with problems of the ordinary types by means of exercises in their construction. Its purpose throughout is to tell the pupil little that he can see, and to help him to see by employing well directed questions. It is a teaching book, useful to any beginner.
