Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Agriculture: A Text Book for Public Schools There is a general movement all over the United States in the direction of placing Elementary Agriculture in the course of study for country schools. In order to secure a county teacher's certificate in Wisconsin, the applicant must pass an examination in elementary agriculture. The Missouri Agricultural College and the Missouri normal schools are carefully training teachers to present this subject in country schools. In South Carolina it is taught in the eighth and ninth grades of the common schools. In Nebraska the applicant for second-grade certificate is required to pass an examination in the elements of agriculture. Elementary Agriculture finds a place in the common-school course of study for the state of Illinois, and is even taught in some of the schools of our large cities. These instances suffice to show that the subject is receiving widespread attention. During the past few years there have been several excellent books written on the subject of Elementary Agriculture for rural schools, but they are of necessity somewhat local in their treatment of the subject. Most of these books are from the cast and south, a few from the middle west, but none from the northwest. Book Teaching of the Elements of Agriculture in the Common Schools Address Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-02-13 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teaching of the Elements of Agriculture in the Common Schools: Address One might reasonably assume that this is an extract from an address before one of our farmers' institutes, or has been taken from a lately issued report of some department of agriculture, and that they are the words and opinions of some leading agriculturist. Not so, however. These are the words of Egerton Ryerson, the founder of the public school system of Ontario, taken from the introduction to his text book on agriculture for use in Ontario public schools, and written in 1870. I can well believe that twenty-five years from the present some student of the educational and economic history of Ontario will be hard at work studying out and trying to explain why so little progress was made in general agricultural instruction in that Province during the years from 1870 to 1899. During that period four text books at least were available and various attempts weremade at encouraging the work; but in 1898, as far as Ontario was concerned, we were no further advanced than we were in 1870. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Agriculture for Public Schools, 1904 Wet soils are cold; dry soils are warm; very dry soils become a desert. Dark soils are usually warmer than light ones; sandy soils are warmer than clay soils. The s10pe of the land surface has a marked effect upon the temperature of the soil. A warm soil prepares plant food faster than a cold one. The soil serves as a root bed for plants. It serves as a support to hold many plants in an upright position. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Agriculture The interest in the teaching of agriculture is but a part of a much larger question, - the movement for teaching by means of things that have come within the student's experience. Laboratory work and all manual work are but a part of the same movement. The primary purpose of teaching agriculture is not to make farmers. It is ahuman-interest subject. The underlying reason why such teaching is desirable is because it brings the schools in touch with the home life - the daily life of the community. A large part of our teaching has had no relation whatever to our daily lives. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Chemistry: As Applied to Agriculture The importance of placing before the youth in our schools, as well as in the hands of our farmers at their homes, the means of acquiring a knowledge of the elements of the science and art of agriculture, has long been acknowledged by teachers and others. Such means have already been available to those who had acquired a limited knowledge of chemistry; but the most valuable works, containing the facts most useful to the practical farmer, have been too voluminous and expensive for his own use and means, or too technical for the use of his sons while in the common schools. Book Elements of Farm Practice Prepared Especially for Teaching Elementary Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of Farm Practice Prepared Especially for Teaching Elementary Agriculture Classic Reprint written by A. D. Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-02 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Farm Practice, Prepared Especially for Teaching Elementary Agriculture This book has been prepared primarily for use in rural schools and for elementary classes in other schools, wherever it is desirable to study the plain and practical problems of the farm and home in their relation to daily life. The book deals largely with common farm practices, rather than with scientific principles. It is intended to throw some light upon and add interest to the things that are done on the farm from day to day. We feel that, if pupils can be interested and enabled to use the farms and the farm homes as laboratories in which to observe and apply the things learned at school, a great step will have been made toward bringing the school in close touch with the home life of the pupils. A study of agriculture in the rural schools elevates, in the minds of the farm youth, the calling of agriculture. A rather close study of a few farm problems impresses one with the great amount of knowledge and skill required to operate a farm successfully; and must convince one that a farm, rightly managed, affords as much opportunity for development as a professional or business career. We do not suggest that the topics shall necessarily be taken up in the order presented, but that each teacher begin with that portion of the book dealing with the particular phase of farm work that is being done on the home farms of the pupils at the time the lesson is given. Each section is a complete reading lesson, followed by questions, examples, and exercises, which relate to the lesson. The questions may be answered orally or in the form of a language paper. The examples will enforce some of the main facts taught in the text. The exercises will require study and observation of local activities and will help to connect up the lesson with the practical things in the community. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Teachers Course 100 Elements of Agriculture, Nature Study and School Gardens, Vol. 1 1. Seeing Things: - "The more I think of it. I find this conclusion more impressed upon me, that the greatest thing a human soul ever does in this world is to see something. Hundreds of people can talk for one who can think, but thousands can think for one who can see. To see clearly is poetry, prophecy and religion- all in one." Ruskin. 2. Learning Things: - "Learning those things in nature that are best worth knowing, to the end of doing those things that make life most worth living." Hodge. 3. Doing Things: - "The daily doing cf needful things with regularity andefficiency is in itself highlyeducative. It constitutes a good and necessary part of a liberal education, and without it no system of education is safe. It teaches, first of all, personal responsibility for things to be accomplished, whereby the child learns the useful lesson that things do not 'just happen', neither do they 'do themselves' - " Davenport. Place of Nature Study in a System of Education. 1. We are not, neither shall we be, free from the need of and interest in the three fundamental human requisites, viz. food, clothing, and shelter. The poet and the philosopher cannot prosper on rhyme and speculation alone. They, as well as the scientist and the laborer, must have life before they have their own peculiar lives; they, too, must be fed, clothed and sheltered. we have here a center in which the interests of all humanity, converge.
