Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements and Science of English Versification It Is the desire of the author to create a greater love for poetry. I do not think it is possible to make great poets any more than it is possible to create great musicians, sculptors, artists, or orators. All must be born with the spark of genius inherent within the soul. I believe, however, that even those possessed of great genius may profit by the research of others, and frequently are induced to follow their art by suggestions and rules pointed out to them. To such who possess real genius from a poetic standpoint this work may be of benefit. Another class to be benefited are readers who love poetry and make a study of it, and yet fail to receive the benefits or see the beauties of true poetry simply because they fail to understand the technique. It is a pleasure to be able to scan critically that which we read. If, however, we are unable to criticise for ourselves the merits of a poem from every standpoint, we necessarily lose much of the real pleasure of the reading. To be able to tell the measure, the rhythm, and the number of feet a verse contains is in every sense a satisfaction to the reader of a poem; yet, not one-third of those who read poetry know anything whatever about measure, feet, or rhythm. They realize there is a certain jingle to the stanza that pleases them, and that is all they know about it. Book The Elements of English Versification Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Elements of English Versification Classic Reprint written by James Wilson Bright and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of English Versification In the preparation of this text-book the immediate needs of the student have been kept in mind. Nothing has been assumed on his part, except a mind disposed to learn the plain truth of elementary facts. Of course this disposition of mind must usually be awakened to the required pitch of interest by the teacher, who, as in the case of any other subject he may teach, should be prepared to interpret and supplement an exposition of the elements of versification. But a text-book should help the teacher in his task of arousing and sustaining the students interest. In most instances such help consists both in a clear analysis and concrete illustration of subject-matter and in a plan of presentation that is adapted to the orderly stages of the student's progress. It is hoped that some share of the teacher's approval won by these merits of a text-book may be bestowed upon the treatise herewith submitted. The exclusion of controversial matter from books on versification is not so much the practice that it may be said to be usually expected. On the contrary, the avoidance of controversy on some points of the subject is likely to occasion in some minds an inclination to suspect either evasion of difficulties or unwarranted reliance on individual judgment. Book The Principles of English Versification Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Principles of English Versification Classic Reprint written by Paull Franklin Baum and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles of English Versification The other inconvenience is that of seeming to deny the real poetry by our preoccupation with its metrical expression. Under pretence that we want to study it more in detail, we pulverize the statue. This is an old charge, and our answer is easy. For, however it may be with the statue, a poem is never pulverized; it is still there on the page! No amount of analyzing can injure the poem. If we think it has injured us, even then we err, and need only recall our natural aversion to hard labor. In nearly every instance it was the work and not the analysis that bothered us. This is a small book and therefore not exhaustive. And since it is as elementary, especially in the treat ment of the principles of rhythm, as is consistent with a measure of thoroughness, the apparatus of mere learning has been suppressed, even where it might perhaps seem needed, as in footnote references to the scientific investigations on which part of the text is based. I have consulted and used, of course, all the books and articles I could find that had anything of value to offer; but I have rarely cited them, not be cause I wish to conceal my indebtedness, but because there is no room for elaborate documentation in such a book as this. On the other hand, I owe a very great deal, both directly and indirectly, to Professor Bliss Perry although my manuscript was finished before I saw his Study of Poetry; and this debt I wish to acknowledge most fully and gratefully. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Science of English Verse It seems highly probable that Aldhelm surely the most fascinat ing figure in our literature before Chaucer - must have written vernacular verse earlier than Caedmon, and that he is therefore entitled to be called the Father of English Poetry. See William of Malmesbury's Life of him, here and there, and scraps in Asser's Life of Alfred. Of course, in this location of Aldhelm, as hinted in the term historic beginning of our literature, one bears in mind the possible sixth-century date of 'widsith's Traveller's Song, of Deor's Lament, and of other poems. Book English Versification

Download or read book English Versification written by James C. Parsons and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-21 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Versification: For the Use of Students In preparing this book, the author has been guided by the experience of many years in the class-room. No attempt has been made to produce an exhaustive treatise on the fascinat ing subject of prosody. The controversy of scholars as to the degree in which quantity prevails as a basis for English rhythm has been studiously avoided. It seems sufficient to follow the prevalent habit of our best poets, as evidenced in their utterance and their works, of assigning to accent the distinguishing characteristic of English verse. Given this as a basis, it is possible to go on and add all the charms of phonetic richness and depth of which the language is capable. Book An Introduction to Poetry

Download or read book An Introduction to Poetry written by Raymond Macdonald Alden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Poetry: For Students of English Literature Chapter Four, on the fundamental problems of English rhythm, deals with the point of greatest difficulty in the whole range of the subject, and is to be regarded, not as making claim to originality, but as the most individual portion of this book. SO recently as the time of publication of the earlier volume, English Verse, it seemed impracticable to dogmatize on the elements of our metres, with any hope of doing more than adding another note to the discordant jangle of voices on that dangerous sub ject. But there is evidence that conditions have be! Come more hopeful; recent writers have seemed to tend more and more toward agreement on certain substantial principles and while one must still wait, no doubt, for a generally accredited science of English prosody, it is perhaps safeito offer for the use of students a rather more pretentious body of doctrine than would have been reasonable hereto. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Versification: A Complete Practical Guide to the Whole Subject A perusal of the present analysis will at once show, even to such as are comparatively unacquainted with the orthodox s00pe of English poetics, how much our national literature is likely to have suffered through want of some such induction to metric science as is now at length made attainable. It is hoped that this manual will in no mean degree serve to advance the proper study of the mother-tongue, only now beginning to receive in our schools and colleges some slight share of the consideration most justly its due. Book The Rhymester Or the Rules of Rhyme

Download or read book The Rhymester Or the Rules of Rhyme written by Tom Hood and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Rhymester, or the Rules of Rhyme: A Guide to English Versification He was born in 1835, and he died toward the end of 1874. He began life as a clerk in the War Office, a position he gave up in 1865, when he became editor of "Fun." In the course of his literary career he wrote four or five novels, of which at least one - "For Valor" - was republished in this country; and he edited as many Christmas annuals. In 1868 he published his first "Comic Annual," in imitation of his father, and so popular did he make it that it continues to appear even now, seven years after his death. He also wrote and illustrated many books for children. As editor of "Fun," he showed that he was also the author of "Rules of Rhyme"; he practiced what he preached, and he neither wrote nor tolerated slipshod rhyme and halting rhythm. While he edited "Fun," its verse -comic or serious, pathetic or satiric - had always a high degree of technical merit. He could not make poets of all those who wrote verse for the paper; but he could and did make them mend their paces and mind their stops. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of Versification If is now about thirty years since I prepared an American edition of a little book by the younger Tom Hood, which purported to set forth the rules of rime (the Rhymester, Appleton Co., and it is just twenty years since I first gave a course in metrical rhetoric to a class of undergraduates in Columbia College. And I have long felt the need of a simple text-book for the beginner, which would serve as an introduction to the study of English versi fication. There are many volumes devoted to the analysis of poetry, but there are few which confine themselves wholly to the problems of prosody; and scarcely any one of these is exactly adapted to the needs of the novice who knows little or nothing about the principles of the metrical art. The subject is treated casually and cursorily in many grammars and in many rhetorics; but the main purpose of these books is to help the student to express himself accu rately and satisfactorily in prose.
