Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Textbook of Economic Zoology and Entomology The point of view from which this book is written is explained in its first chapter. For that matter it is indicated clearly by the title. If the study of zoology is being neglected in schools for the alleged reason that it is not a useful study, the neglect is based on an unsound reason. For zoology is useful, and not in one way alone, but in two ways; and both of these in addition to its pedagogic value as a study which develops accurate personal observation and independent personal attainment of conclusion. Zoology is first of all useful in the way so often stressed by Huxley, as a study that gives us a sounder basis for our own life by showing the demands of Nature on animal life in general and the kinds of responses to be made to these demands. In other words it is quite specially a branch of science that can help us largely as a guide to living in conformity to natural laws. Zoology is also useful in a more obvious and commercially ratable way, by revealing the precise relation which many animals bear to us in their attitude of friends to be cultivated, or foes to be fought. Injurious insects, alone, cause this country an annual loss of a billion dollars. A general knowledge of insect life and an intelligent and vigorous application of this knowledge can save the nation half this loss. To the teacher intending to use this book as class guide there is due a word of explanation. The authors have attempted to make the book an introduction to general zoology as well as to that specific phase of it called economic. The first chapters are therefore of a nature to introduce pupils to general facts of animal structure and life. They are arranged on the basis of accepted pedagogic principles. Book Outlines of Economic Zo logy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Outlines of Economic Zo logy Classic Reprint written by Albert Moore Reese and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Economic Zoology The book may be used in several ways. As followed by the author, the course may be given as a separate one to students who have already had the regular elementary course in general zoology. In this case the students will be familiar with the classification, structure and habits of most of the type forms discussed, but, if desired, additional labo ratory work may be arranged for the study of certain parasitic and other economically important forms not generally considered in a general laboratory course. Or, the text might be used in a beginning course in zoology by some amplification of the morphologic and other aspects and considerable increase in laboratory work. Again, it could well be used as supplementary reading with, say, one hour credit per semester for the year, in connection with the regular elementary course in general zoology. It is thought that, used in one or other of these ways or in some still different way, it should be especially useful to students in agriculture, who want a practical course. Various sources of information have been drawn upon, and recognized authorities in each subject consulted so far as possible. The publications of the Government, especially those of the Department of Agriculture, have been freely used and quoted. The figures have been borrowed largely, either from technical or from more popular works, whichever gave the best ideas of the animals portrayed; the source is indicated in every case. The brief bibliography at the end of the book is merely to aid the student, who may have become especially interested in some animal or group, to get more detailed information. Book A Text Book in General Zo logy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Text Book in General Zo logy Classic Reprint written by Glenn W. Herrick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-11 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book in General Zoology The arrangement, presentation, and selection of the subject-matter in the present text-book have been determined by the experience gained from the labors of ten years in the class room with the grade of students for whom this work is intended. In fact, the text is simply a more orderly discussion of the same subjects in the same sequence that have been presented for ten years to successive classes in elementary zoology. The author, in his work with these students, has attempted to interpret, with much thought and care, the zoologi cal demands of such students according to their average receptivities and practical needs rather than by any preconceived ideas of what constitutes a knowledge of zoology. The aim has been to create an interest in nature, beget an acquaintance with the lives, habits, and activities of animals, train the powers of observation, quicken the judgment, widen the horizon of environment, augment the capabili ties for independent thinking, and inculcate an unswerving regard for the truth. The instruction that a potential citizen receives in zoology must give more than a mere acquaintance with animals. If the study of this science does not accomplish the objects enumerated in the fore going paragraph, it loses its highest value as an educational subject in the curricula of the common schools. That the study of zoology may fulfill its function as a subject of mental discipline and, at the same time, give to that large majority of pupils who become ordinary citizens an acquaintance with animals, the author has been led, from his experience in teaching, to include in a zoological course a goodly amount of natural history and comparative anatomy, a large share of animal ecology, economic zoology and physiology, a moderate amount of classification, embryology, and paleontology, something of the history of zoology, and, through all, a persistent presentation of the relationships of animals and of the manner in which they have been evolved. To present the foregoing divisions of the subject-matter of zoology in their proper relations and proportions is indeed a difficult task, and one which, at best, is open to criticism; but it is hoped that the pupils who follow the course here laid down will gain an acquaint ance with animals and acquire an interest in them, and, at the same time, receive that mental discipline which they would derive from the pursuit of other studies. Book Principles of Economic Zoology Field and Laboratory Guide Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Economic Zoology Field and Laboratory Guide Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Lewis Sylvester Daugherty M. S. and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Economic Zoology Field and Laboratory Guide, Vol. 1 A satisfactory course in Zoology requires field, laboratory, and text-book work on a series of typical animals. This method will bring the student into contact with the animal world in its manifold relations. The teacher may follow any order which he prefers, but the studies in this guide are arranged With a view to seasonal supply. Insects are plentiful and easily obtained by the class in the fall, while fishes, frogs, and turtles may be kept in aquaria or purchased at any time from dealers in zoologic supplies. Also, the dissection of the vertebrate forms is less unpleasant in the winter. Earthworms and lower forms may be obtained in the spring. Zoology is a study of animals and not information about animals. As Ruskin says, the greatest thing in the world is for a man to see something and to tell clearly what he saw. It is intended that the student find his answers in the animal before him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
