Book The Gothic Revival and American Church Architecture

Download or read book The Gothic Revival and American Church Architecture written by Phoebe B. Stanton and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 1997-05-28 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This illustrated account of the impact of the English Gothic revival on American church architecture in the mid-nineteenth century finds that this fundamentally conservative movement provided the foundation for a new, influential aesthetic. With meticulous research and carefully chosen illustrations, Phoebe Stanton here explores the influence of the English Gothic revival on American church architecture in the mid-nineteenth century, arguing that this fundamentally conservative movement provided a foundation for a new aesthetic. Examining the writings of the movement's leading proponents as well as a variety of important buildings, Stanton offers a comprehensive survey of the architectural principles and models that became most influential in America. She also confirms the importance of the Cambridge Camden Society, which provided the theoretical atmosphere and practical examples that helped to establish new standards of excellence in American architecture.

Book Gothic Revival Worldwide

Download or read book Gothic Revival Worldwide written by Timothy Brittain-Catlin and published by Leuven University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-18 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pugin’s global influence on church architecture and material reform The year 2012 marked the bicentenary of the gothic revival architect A.W.N. Pugin. His influence as a designer not only spread fast globally, but also played a leading part in the transformation of material culture from the mid-nineteenth century onwards. Pugin’s work has been comprehensively reevaluated over the last decade. In this volume sixteen leading scholars from across the globe discuss Pugin’s direct influence on church architecture and furnishing. Beautifully illustrated with a large selection of new photography, Gothic Revival Worldwide, the successor to the volume Gothic Revival published in 2000, reveals how Pugin’s ideas played a profound role in the changing face of material reform in church architecture as an expression of the evolving identity of the churches across the world from North America to Mongolia and the South Pacific. Book Apostle to the Wilderness

Download or read book Apostle to the Wilderness written by Barry L. Craig and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the life and work of John Medley, the first member of the Oxford Movement to be consecrated bishop. As an experiment, W. E. Gladstone, future Prime Minister of England and keen churchman, arranged in 1844 to have a member of this controversial group appointed to the Episcopal bench. Because those associated with this movement were suspected of Roman Catholic theological leanings and perhaps even disloyalty to the English Establishment, such a move was politically and ecclesiastically dangerous in England. So Medley was sent to the colonies. Intended to establish High Churchmanship and the British Empire in the soil of the new world, Medley became convinced, over this forty-seven-year episcopate, that the American model of the church was more practical than the British. He eventually forged an identity for his diocese that was, in many ways, to be the pattern for the modern worldwide Anglican Church. Barry Craig is an Assistant Professor in the department of philosophy at St. Thomas University.

Book Anglican Church Architecture

Download or read book Anglican Church Architecture written by James Barr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anglican Church Architecture: With Some Remarks Upon Ecclesiastical Furniture "To say nothing of the plain duty of building new churches in our crowded districts: surely from a grateful spirit, to adorn God's house with every lawful ornament; to make it wide enough to admit with decency and ease an increasing population to kneel within its precincts; to provide for its being outwardly of a gracious aspect in the eyes of those who should come there to listen to God's Word, and to offer up their supplications to Him; to let the common home of the religious sympathies' of all around us be that which we most cheerfully adorn with the rich materials and the finished skill which wealth commands; surely thus to make the temple of the Lord beautiful, and the sanctuary of His poor commodious, is the acting of a fit and well-instructed piety."
