Book Elementary Political Economy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Political Economy Classic Reprint written by A. B. Meservey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Political Economy Of all the sciences Political Economy is one of the most important. It is the foundation of public and private prosperity. Hence, every person who is to be a citizen of this Republic should have a good knowledge of the elementary principles of Political Economy. It should be one of the prescribed studies in the public schools, but it has seldom been taught outside of colleges and the higher seminaries. It has always been considered a most intricate subject, and hence to be attempted only at the close of a long course of study; but it does not seem possible that a science of such importance can be too difficult for common people to understand. May it not be that the trouble is with the textbooks rather than the subject? The old treatises are full of statistics, discussions, theories, opinions, hypotheses, and arguments; but these are worse than useless in a textbook of elementary principles. Book Elements of Political Economy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elements of Political Economy Classic Reprint written by J. Shield Nicholson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Political Economy This work is intended primarily for the use of students. The leading principles are stated, as far as possible, without the introduction of controversial matter. At the same time, throughout the work indications are given of the points still in dispute and of the difficulties involved in the further development of the principles and theories of which an elementary exposition is given. The work is based on the "Principles of Political Economy" (3 vols.) by the same author. It is, however, not simply an abstract. In the first four books the material used has been almost entirely recast. In the last book it was thought better to omit certain topics altogether rather than attempt any further condensation of the argument. In order to keep the volume within reasonable limits the greater part of the historical matter which forms a characteristic feature of the larger work has been excluded, though the results of the application of the historical method have been retained. Little space also was available for the history of economic thought and doctrines. In the text, however, the importance of these and other omitted topics has been emphasised, and the student is recommended throughout to supplement his reading by reference to special works. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Political Economy: Or Elementary View of the Manner in Which the Wealth of Nations Is Produced, Increased, Distributed, and Consumed If the strange discordance of opinion, which has lately been manifested on the report of the Bullion Committee, affords a lamentable evidence how little the true principles of Political Economy are understood in this country, the uncommon interest which the controversy has excited seems however to warrant the hope that the attempt to render the science more accessible will not be deemed altogether unworthy of public approbation. It is particularly for those to whom rank or fortune hold out the noble prospect of being one day called to legislate for their fellow-subjects, that I have condensed the elements of a science on which so great a share of human happiness depends, and which, on that account, can never be though repulsive by those who feel interested in the welfare of their country. I lay no claim to either originally or invention. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Propositions Illustrative of the Principles of Currency: To Which Are Added, Outlines of Political Economy Since there is a constant tendency in the productions of different countries to find the best markets for themselves, it follows that all prohibitions, bounties, drawbacks, protecting duties, &c. (which are so many monopolies in disguise) are unwise, and if existing any where, should be abolished. I firmly believe, says Lord Liverpool, that on all commercial subjects, the fewer the laws the better. I am sorry to see so many on our Statute Book, (p. When a pernicious system has been long persevered in, it requires a long period to get rid of it. It is therefore the more necessary to lose no time in doing something. Book Dictionary of Political Economy Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dictionary of Political Economy Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Robert Harry Inglis Palgrave and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 806 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dictionary of Political Economy, Vol. 1 The stream of existence, if the simile may he permitted, reaches us deeply coloured by the soil of the fields through which it has flowed, by the varied strata of the cliffs - some of them undermined by it - that have bounded its long and devious course. Considerations of space have necessarily confined the scope of the work mainly to the developments of economic study in England, the United States, and our English-speaking colonies - and, in regard to these, an endeavour has been made to present under all the subjects treated an account of the beat and most recent authorities; whilst the opinions hold in other countries have also, as far as the required limits allowed, been considered and mentioned. The biographies introduced have been selected with the same end. They show what has actually been written in former times, and hence will enable the reader to trace the progress of economic thought. Much attention has been given to the less-known writers. It is difficult for the student under ordinary circumstances to trace out when such authors lived, the surroundings which influenced their lives, and the opinions they held. While the oversights in science are sometimes as remarkable as the discoveries, these earlier labourers have not unfrequently been the precursors of other and better-known men, and have sometimes anticipated opinions that have held sway for long periods after them. The different economic schools in the principal countries of the world are also described. Thus this volume contains notices of the American, Austrian, Dutch and English schools, and the French, German, Italian, and Spanish schools will follow in due course. A work extending over so wide a range of subjects is, necessarily, the production of many minds, of writers whose pursuits, occupations, and studies are very diverse and varied. I desire to record my warm thanks to the contributors to the book, which is, I think, in itself an almost unique example of economic cooperation. Where all have assisted so heartily, it is less easy to select individual names; but I wish to be allowed to express my special thanks to Professor Dunbar, Dr. Keynes, Professor Marshall, Professor Montague, Professor Nicholson, Signor M. Pantaleoni, Mr. L. R Phelps, Mr. L. L. Price, Mr. E. Schuster, Professor H. Sidgwick. and General Walker for valuable assistance in different directions, and particularly to Dr. Bonar, Professor Edgeworth, Mr. Henry Higgs, and Mr. H. R Tedder, who have kindly helped in the more arduous labour of the preparation of the work for the press. This is but an act of justice, that readers may know to whom they are specially indebted. It is plainer than ever that this is an economic question, that is, a question of economizing. It is the purpose of this book to examine the economic foundations of our national welfare and to point out some of the simpler and more direct methods of strengthening these foundations, to the end that our nation and all nations that aim at democracy and justice may prosper more and more. Book A Geometrical Political Economy

Download or read book A Geometrical Political Economy written by H. Cunynghame and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Geometrical Political Economy: Being an Elementary Treatise on the Method of Explaining Some of the Theories of Pure Economic Science by Means of Diagrams The following pages do not require in the reader any knowledge of Mathematics except such Geometry as has been acquired at school, and very little of that. I am aware that to a number of thinkers of great powers the very sight of a diagram is odious. But the feeling of repulsion is really only similar to the dislike of a new language. To read German in old characters is disagreeable to many persons, and the difficulty of Russian and Hebrew partly depends on the alarming aspect of the alphabets of those languages. But the geometrical method is so charming when once it is grasped, and enables somewhat recondite laws to be so clearly seen, that its mastery is worth an effort. The thanks of all English students are due to Professor Marshall, to Fleeming Jenkin, and Mr. Stanley Jevons, for introducing this method into England; and I shall not easily forget the pleasure which I felt, when about thirty years ago the first-named of these writers initiated me into the geometrical method of studying Economics which he has done so much to develop and improve. The title which I have given to this work is perhaps open to the objection that the curves employed are rather graphic than truly geometrical. An examination of them will, however, show that they are more than mere 'graphs.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Descriptive Economics

Download or read book Descriptive Economics written by Louis Lafayette Williams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-13 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Economics: An Introduction to Economic Science The work is a wide departure from the ordinary plan of most elementary works on Political Economy, or, as it is preferably called, Economics. These works generally commence with an abstract discussion of wealth or value. In the following pages the terms wealth and value are nowhere used in a technical sense, and the same is true of most of the technical terms of Economics. At the same time, however, the theories to which these terms give rise, are indirectly discussed and all the well known propositions of Economics are clearly and fully set forth. It is hoped that the student and reader will find here the collection of economic phenomena, classified and arranged as required for the more abstract reasoning and generalizations relating to the higher branches of the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Materials for the Study of Elementary Economics In the choice of the materials the editors have been guided by actual classroom experiment. The nucleus of the book was originally printed as a series of bulletins which have for three formed a part of the reading required of beginning students in economics at the University of Chicago. During this time unsatisfactory selections have been eliminated and much new matter has been added. Copies of the bulletins have been submitted for criticism to teachers in several other institutions. The volume which now appears may thus be said already in a measure to have demonstrated its usefulness as an aid in college instruction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Journal of Political Economy The primary Object of the index number is to measure or express variations in the value Of money, and a little reflection will show that because of its object or end every index number involves some standard or unit of value. This standard Of value may not be explicitly predicated, because on its face the index number is merely an Objective, inductive investigation of prices. But when we reduce from these prices an expression of the Change in the value of money, we have tacitly or explicitly set up the commodities - or a part of the commodities - to which these prices pertain, as a standard of value. The reason is evident. If I had not previously proved in a work of detail, by numerous ex amples and strict reasoning, that Political Eco momy, in the present state of the science, is only the exposition of What is passing every day; and that all the facts are so intimately connected together, that it has become easy to refer to their causes, and to deduce from them satisfactory results, every thing must have been taken upon my credit; and I am far from pretending to so much deference. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Principles of Economics: Together With a Short Sketch of Economic History First of all, it has been deemed well to present to the stu dent in the opening chapter an idea of what the science is, and to show him, as is being done in the present chapter, what are the main topics with which the science is con cerned. In another introductory chapter there is pre sented a discussion of some of the fundamental institutions in our social order. In the second place, it is thought advisable to give in a few chapters a skeleton outline of the economic history of mankind, with more particular attention to those late developments in English and American economic history which have given rise to existing economic conditions. This part of the subject is often omitted from elementary text-books, and therefore a word of explanation is here in place. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Economics Nature and Importance of Economics. - 'Political-Economy,' according to its derivation from three Greek words, means the law of household management applied to communities. It is very often called Economics for short. More directly, it may be denned as the study of the making, exchanging, sharing, and using of wealth. The first great treatise on Economics in English was written by Adam Smith (a professor in the University of Glasgow) and published in 1776. It was entitled the Wealth of Nations. Almost immediately it began to exert a wide influence. The science so comprehensively expounded by Adam Smith has naturally developed almost beyond recognition since his time.
