Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Mechanics A few years' experience, both as Student and as Tutor, has led me to a grateful appreciation of the method of teach ing which is at present pursued by our University; one of the highest aims of which is to promote habits of rapid and accurate thought, and in this it is eminently successful. But the nature of the training adopted for this purpose has proved injurious to the style of our Mathematical Literature, more especially in the department of Natural Philosophy. Our educational books of Natural Science, in seeking to fulfil the requirements of the senate-house, have become mere collections of definite propositions; generally containing, it is true, all the known facts and the mathematical deductions dependent upon them which appertain to the respective subjects, but seldom offering the smallest relief to the barren ness which is incidental to such compositions: in this shape they have lost all the fulness and freshness of life; all popular illustration, all freedom of expression has been denied them; they have been deprived, in fact, of nearly all the charms that usually render the pursuit of science fascinating to the young. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Principles Elementary Mechanics The demonstration of the formula for centrifugal force may appear to be unnecessarily lengthy, but I trust that the student will gain a clearer conception of the mode of action of the forces, and be better satisfied with the logic of the demonstration, by following the proof here given, than by certain of the shorter methods. The demonstra tion by some of the latter methods is defective, although the same result is reached by them. Book Elementary Mechanics of Solids Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Mechanics of Solids Classic Reprint written by W. T. An; Emtage and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Mechanics of Solids This book has been written after many years' experience in teaching Theoretical Mechanics to students of a great variety of ages and attainments. I attach great importance to the value of carefully selected and carefully explained examples, and throughout the book numerous examples will be found worked out and accompanied by notes on the processes employed in their solution. In addition to these, there are nearly five hundred questions for exercise. Many of these questions are taken from examination papers, the source being always clearly stated. In the teaching of any branch of science the value of experimental illustrations has now come to be fully recognized; and I have described upwards of forty experiments which may all be performed by teacher or student with the help of very inexpensive apparatus. At the same time more elaborate apparatus may be used, when it is available, to illustrate much of the subject matter. The book will be found to contain all the subjects in the syllabus of the Elementary Stage of Theoretical Mechanics of Solids of the Board of Education, South Kensington; while, to increase its usefulness and to adapt it to the requirements of students for other examinations, the theoretical proofs of many propositions have been added. It may be read without any mathematical attainments beyond an ability to solve easy algebraical equations, except that in a few instances easy quadratics and the properties of similar triangles have been employed. My thanks are due to Prof. E. A. Gregory and Mr. A. T. Simmons, B.Sc., who have helped me by many valuable suggestions during the preparation of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Mechanics: Including Hydrostatics and Pneumatics The subjects of these Manuals are for the most part, though not exclusively, the same as those of the Syllabus of the Science and Art Department, South Kensington, and the treatment will be found to meet the requirements for the Examinations held by that Department. In their wider scope the Manuals are intended to serve two somewhat different purposes: 1. They are designed, in the first place, for Self-Instruction, and will present, in a form suitable for private study, the main subjects entering into an enlightened education; so that young persons in earnest about self-culture may be able to master them for themselves. 2. The other purpose of the Manuals is to serve as d104-books in Schools. The mode of treatment naturally adopted in what is to be studied without a teacher, so far from being a drawback in a school-manual, will, it is believed, be a positive advantage. The subject is made, as far as possible, to unfold itself gradually, as if the pupil were discovering the principles himself, the chief function of the book being, to bring the materials before him, and to guide him by the shortest road to the discovery. This is now acknowledged to be the only profitable method of acquiring knowledge, whether as regards self-instruction or learning at school. Book Syllabus of Elementary Mechanics

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syllabus of Elementary Mechanics: With Suitable Exercises and Examples The accompanying Syllabus is u outline of the work dealt with for some years by Professor Loudon in his lectures on Elementary Mechanics, and it is hoped that the present publication will prove a convenience. The usual division into Statics and Dynamics has not been made, but these two parts are considered together. In the Examples, the object aimed at was adaptability rather than originality, and thus some familiar exercises may be found in the collection. It is believed that this part of the work will supply the student with an adequate means of testing his knowledge. It will he noticed that the difference between a pound mass and a pound force has been emphasized by using n distinct abbreviation in each case. This was suggested by an instructor of wide experience, and will be found a valuable expedient. Though primarily intended for the use of students in Physics at the University, it is probable that teachers in other institutions will find this little work useful. Professor Loudon's numerous other duties prevented him from revising any part, either before or during the time of printing. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mechanics: An Elementary d104-Book Theoretical and Practical I believe it to be desirable that a student should commence the study of Mechanics With Kinematics and Kinetics, and 'have therefore arranged the book on this plan. At the same time it Will, I hope, be found that the Statics is in great measure independent of the other part of the subject, though at the cost of some repetition. It will be possible therefore for a teacher to take it before the Kinematics. In the Third Part some of the simple experimental laws of Hydrostatics are discussed and explained. The book has grown considerably beyond the limits of my lectures, though it is by no means a complete treatise on Elementary Mechanics still I h0pe it may prove useful as an introduction to the subject. Download or read book A Short Course in Elementary Mechanics for Engineers Classic Reprint written by Clifford Newton Mills and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Course in Elementary Mechanics for Engineers The subject matter is divided into three parts, namely, Kinematics, Kinetics, and Statics. Much detailed discussion is omitted, and the course is written from the definition viewpoint. In considering the working principles of Statics, much emphasis is placed on the importance of moment equations. The Engineer's system of units is used. Throughout the text are many problems, a large number of these being original. In fact, it is by solving problems that a mastery of the subject is gained. Many of the problems will not be difficult to solve, but others will require the student's best effort. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
