Book Elementary Latin

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Latin: An Introductory Course In the preparation of these lessons, the author has kept in view the necessity for simplicity of statement and for the avoidance of unnecessary details. The purpose has been to furnish drill on the forms and constructions of most frequent occurrence, leaving the more difficult syntactical relations and the forms less frequently employed for a later point in the course. A few topics included in the lessons near the end of the book have been given place in order to meet the needs of teachers who prefer a more complete presentation of Latin grammar in the first year. These topics may, however, be omitted and the work of the lessons made to consist of the translation exercises and drill on the essential constructions and forms previously given. Instead of the usual arrangement of lessons which must be divided into two or three assignments, the plan has been adopted of providing short lessons which can usually be covered in single recitations. Naturally, no such plan can be, made to correspond absolutely to the needs of every class, and occasionally a teacher may find it necessary to omit or to leave for later review, part of the exercises of a lesson. But the presentation of forms and syntax in small units will, it is hoped, tend to prevent confusion in the mind of the pupil and to aid the teacher in planning the work of the class. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Latin Latin seem alive; to give the first year study a value for gen eral culture; to minimize the difficulties of beginning Latin; to prepare thoroughly for the second year work. To carry further the first two aims of the book, the number of illustrations has been nearly doubled, and a description in English is attached to each. These descriptions taken together give a general idea of the life and customs of the Romans. To minimize the difficulties of beginning Latin, the early lessons have been divided and made shorter, so that the ap proach to the subject is much more gradual in the new edition than in the old. The first ten lessons of the former edition make twenty in the new book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. First, then, there will be found a complete, and, it is hoped, a judicious system of memorizing the Grammar, indicated at the beginning and in the progress of each lesson, by exact references. The revised edition of Andrews and Stoddard's Grammar is referred to, as it is very generally used, and is, no doubt, an the whole, the best yet published. As this system has been carefully studied, and faithfully proved by experiment in the school room, it is earnestly urged that it be strictly followed, without addition or substraction. Book Latin Lessons Classic Reprint

Download or read book Latin Lessons Classic Reprint written by Charles E. Bennett and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Lessons The present work is new, and has been prepared in response to the extensive demand for a beginners book suited for use in conjunction with the Latin Grammar. In all essentials it follows the plan of my Foundations of Latin, published in 1898. Beginning with Lesson XVII, it has been found possible to introduce a number of simple selections of continuous discourse, which, it is hoped, will add an element of interest to the book without detracting from its disciplinary value. Most of these selections are taken, with the consent of the publishers (Messrs. Longmans, Green and Co.), from Longmans' Illustrated First Latin Beading Book. I have also inserted frequent 'review lessons' throughout the book. The material of the body of the work is arranged in sixty-six 'Lessons, ' a designation chosen more in view of its convenience and familiarity than because the single 'Lessons' were deemed to represent the normal amount of work to be prepared for each class exercise. Many of them will be too long, probably, even for the best class. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
