Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Hydrostatics The Elements op Hydrostatics seem capable of being presented in a simpler form than that in which they appear in all the works on the subject with which I am acquainted. I have therefore attempted to give a simple explanation of the Mathematical Theory of Hydrostatics and the practical application of it. Prior to the publication of this work some copies were privately circulated with a view to obtain opinions from Teachers of experience as to the sufficiency and accuracy of the information contained in it. A few suggestions received in consequence of this arrangement will be found in the Notes at the end of the volume, page 97. I am indebted to several friends for the collection of Miscellaneous Examples given in Chapter viii. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Hydrostatics: With Numerous Examples The analogy between pressure at a point in a uid, and velocity at any instant of a moving particle, and between their respective measures, is too striking to escape the notice of the student; both terms are abstractions employed for the purpose of avoiding the constant use of the periphrasis, which is given once for all in the definitions of their measures. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary d104-Book of Hydrostatics In the English system, the most usual unit of length is the foot The foot is one-third of a yard, the yard being defined as the distance between two marks on a certain bar of platinum which is now kept in the Tower of London. There is no reason why this particular length should have been chosen as the unit, beyond that of' custom. This fact is expressed by saying that the yard is a purely arbitrary unit. Smaller lengths may be measured in inches (1 foot 12 inches), longer lengths in miles (1 mile 5280 feet), both units being derived from the foot or yard. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Solutions of Examples in Elementary Hydrostatics I Have been frequently asked to produce solutions of the examples in my Treatise on Elementary Hydrostatics, but the pressure of other work has prevented me from undertaking the task of preparing them. These solutions have been almost entirely drawn up by Mr A. W. Flux, Fellow of St John's College, and I am much indebted to him for the labour which he has bestowed upon the work. I hope that they will be found to be useful and helpful, both to teachers and to students. No figures have been given, but the student will find no serious difficulty in drawing figures for himself when necessary, and he will find it greatly to his advantage to do so. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Text-Book of Dynamics and Hydrostatics The design of this Text-book is to explain all that is usually included in a first course of Dynamics. In accordance with the now common acceptation of the term, I have called Dynamics the Science of Force. The book therefore treats of what was formerly, and occasionally still is, called Theoretical Mechanics. Great pains have been taken with the early chapters, which deal with the fundamental principles of Dynamics and with the subject of units. Throughout the book every important proposition is fol lowed by numerical examples fully worked out, and by others which are left as exercises for the student. These examples have been taken from examination papers set in the South Kensington, Civil Service, and University Examinations. Specimen Examination Papers are given at the end of the book. Book Hydrostatics and Elementary Hydrokinetics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Hydrostatics and Elementary Hydrokinetics Classic Reprint written by George M. Minchin and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydrostatics and Elementary Hydrokinetics In this work no previous acquaintance with the nature and properties of a fluid is assumed. As in my treatise on Statics, I have begun with the very elements, and, assuming that the students reading in pure mathematics is advancing simultaneously with his study of Hydrostatics, I have endeavoured to lead him into the advanced portions of the subject. It will be noticed, however, that the way in which the reader is introduced to the notion of a perfect fluid is very different from that which is usually adopted in similar treatises. A definition of a perfect fluid founded upon the elementary facts and principles of the theory of strain and stress is not calculated to produce the impression of simplicity, more especially when the symbols of the Difierential Calculus are employed in the process. I maintain, however, that in such a presentation of the basis of the subject there is really nothing which a beginner who is familiar with the elements of Geometry, Algebra, and Trigonometry cannot readily understand. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Elementary Hydrostatics In Chapter I., after shewing that solids may be classified according to their behaviour under the action of forces, I have deduced the definition of a fluid from the characteristic behaviour of all substances which we recognise as fluids. From this definition the principles of the subject are deduced. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Mechanics: Including Hydrostatics and Pneumatics The statements made in a book should be carefully criticised, and not taken for granted and all kinds of Special cases should be thought of or tried, to see if an exception cannot' be found. It is by thinking one's self on a subject that it becomes really known to one's self; it will never be really known if we only try to under stand and remember what the book says.
