Book Elementary Harmony Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Harmony Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by C. H. Kitson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-30 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Harmony, Vol. 3 In the Polyphonic Period the contrapuntal aspect of music is chie y revealed, for the simple reason that combined sound itself was the result of combined melodies. In later periods we have both the harmonic and the contrapuntal styles, and the second is always the later manifestation. For, obviously, a writer cannot give attention to the individuality of his various parts till he is thoroughly conversant with the harmonic basis underlying their combination. This book has dealt with the purely harmonic side of the period. The student's next step is to study the contra puntal phase. It may further be urged that the best-equipped person for attempting modern technique is he who understands the whole process of development. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Harmony, Vol. 2 It is hoped that the use of various types of exercises will give the student the power to use the resource discussed in some practical fashion, and also give the mind the training that the figured bass denies. The Exercises have been made simple and short, as the students for Whom this book is intended have not much time to devote to the subject. But it has been my aim to enable them to spend what little time they have to the best advantage. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Harmony, Vol. 1 MY Evolution of Harmony was intended for students of some maturity, and for those who are able to devote 'a considerable time to the subject. A large number of those who have used it have expressed a wish that I should write a short elementary treatise on similar lines. The present book is the first part of this work. It is intended for beginners, for use in schools, and for. Students in musical institutions who have to acquire in a short time a knowledge of the main facts of harmony. In attempting to make the book short and concise, I have been compelled to make it somewhat dogmatic. As the book is for beginners, this is probably an advantage. No attempt is made to deal with modern technique. Obviously such a course would be quite out of place in a book of this nature. In the preparation of this volume I have kept in the foreground what I think are the essentials for any profitable study: (a) ear-training, (b) constructive work, (6) constant use of the unessential. If the study of harmony is to be of any use at all, it must enable the student to use the material about which he reads, even if it be in the most elementary fashion. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Harmony Harmony is the grammar of tone language. The knowledge of Harmony is just as indispensable to anyone studying music, as the knowledge of grammar is to those who wish to gain more than a superficial understanding of a language. Since the exercises in Harmony (from very simple pedagogical grounds) not only can be resolved into their elements, but, for the most part, must be a combination of separate elements, the student can easily see in them the preparation for composing; they are such indeed in no other sense than are the orthographical and grammatical exercises preparatory to writing poetry - not less elementary, not less indispensable. All chords may be divided into two groups: - 1. Triad, or chord with three tones. 2. Sept chord, or chord with four tones. Every triad consists of a fundamental tone, its third and its fifth. Every tone of the scale may be used as the fundamental of such a triad, thus a triad can be formed on any tone of the scale by adding its third and its fifth. If one uses only the tones which belong to a certain scale he will find that part of the triads have a major third and a perfect fifth, while others have a minor third and a perfect fifth. The triad on the VII degree of any scale, as well as on the II degree of the minor scale, always has a minor third and a diminished fifth. The difference between these triads does not concern us at present. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Manner of Dealing with the Triad in the Different Grades of Instruction in Singing. The Triad forms the basis of harmony in song it is therefore necessary that singers, especially singers of part-songs, should be acquainted with the same in its various positions. The following remarks are offered as suggestions of the manner in which this knowledge may be imparted. The tones of the common chord are the first to which the attention of little children should be called, for the reason that a child more easily perceives and comprehends greater intervals than smaller ones; moreover the Triad should form the foundation of the instruction given in every grade of elementary instruction in singing.
