And the fact that the question is in a transition state makes it no easier. Yet it seemed desirable to publish something at the present time for the use of the younger clergy, which should supply them with a general view of the history of the Education question, and should also indicate some of those great principles which must always guide the Church's policy on that subject. The student of education keeps his mind open to the influence of every honest word whether spoken by the thinkers of old or by the seers of to-day, and he keeps his heart open to the influence of the living child, to whom all educational systems owe their ex istence. And who shall say which speaks the more effectively, Plato and Emerson and Mark Hopkins, or the tow-headed boy in the fourth seat in the third row and the patient teacher who is leading him, helpfully and hopefully, according to her lights? It was, however, during the Paris Exhibition of 1889, and the International Congress of Primary Education, which was opened on the l0th of August of that year, at the Sorbonne, by the Minister of Public Instruction, that I fully realised the great activity which prevailed in the French Educational Department. Book Literature in the Elementary School Classic Reprint

Download or read book Literature in the Elementary School Classic Reprint written by Porter L. Macclintock and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literature in the Elementary School This book had its origin in several years of experience and experiment in teaching classes in literature in the Laboratory School of the University of Chicago, when that fruitful venture in education was being conducted by Professor John Dewey; in many years of private reading with children; and in many years of lecturing to teachers of children. Indeed, all the material bears the unconcealable marks of its origin as lectures, it being extremely difficult to turn into decorous chapters in a book, stuff which first took shape as spontaneous and informal lectures. The central matter of the book was published as a series of articles in the Elementary School Teacher of October, November, and December, 1902, and a synopsis of the whole book was printed and widely circulated in January, 1904. These facts may partially account for a certain familiarity that many readers will perceive. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Teaching of History in Elementary Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Teaching of History in Elementary Schools Classic Reprint written by R. L. Archer and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Teaching of History in Elementary Schools To-day the attention of everyone is fixed on the history that is being made from hour to hour. Our grasp of the ideals which we have formed in the past is being put to the test, and the course of the future is being determined. Patriotism is not a matter of discussion, but of action. The connection between the lessons which the citizens of Great Britain have learned from their knowledge of her history and the significance which they attach to the present momentous struggle is so close that we hope to be pardoned for publishing a book on the teaching of history even at such a time. It is true that, in the midst of such events, it is hard to view the past in its proper perspective and not to regard the whole course of history from the standpoint of the present issues. The book, however, was in the main written before the war, when it was possible to look back on the past and forward into the future with less emotion and more coldblooded judgment. What emboldens us to publish it now is that, reading our manuscript again in these days when interpretations of history are being tested in the fire, we see nothing to withdraw and little to alter. The nation has entered this war in no jingo spirit. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Career of an Elementary School Teacher Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Career of an Elementary School Teacher Classic Reprint written by Fanny Street and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Career of an Elementary School Teacher Of all the forms of service for the Kingdom of God for which to-day recruits are sought, the work of elementary teaching calls with special urgency for men and women of single-minded devotion. Few, perhaps, feel within themselves at the outset a conscious fitness or clear vocation for this high task. There are not many men and women now clearly convinced that they were called by God to this service, who were perfectly sure, when first they attempted to teach, that they had a special vocation. Such a conviction often develops by slow degrees in the course of training and experience. But all those who feel strongly the love of learning and the joy of sharing it, or the love of little children and the sacredness of their growth and development, should consider carefully whether this may not be the life-work towards which their own natural inclinations are rightly guiding them. Those, too, who are concerned for the needs of the world at large, who recognize the urgent necessity for a new attitude of mind towards the social, international, and inter-racial problems that beset us, may well consider whether the true education of the mass of the people is not the surest way to build up the new world for which we long. Each of these three different aspects of the work may be interpreted as a call to those who have the power to meet some of its manifold demands.
