Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Essentials of Descriptive Geometry IT has been the endeavor Of the author in writing this text to include only those portions Of descriptive geometry which possess industrial utility and which develop the qualities Of mind so essential in a draftsman. First and foremost descriptive geometry should aim to teach projection. A draftsman must be able both to read and to write drawings with facility, and projection is the very grammar Of the language Of the designer. Secondly, descriptive geometry should aim to develop the ability to solve problems concerning the relations Of points, lines, and planes. These are, of course, but elementary parts Of all engineering structures as shown on drawings and it is important that a draftsman be prepared to solve problems relating to them directly on the drawing board. Thirdly, and perhaps most important Of all, descriptive geometry should aim to promote the ability to analyse a problem into its component parts, to reason from a given set Of conditions to a required set Of conclusions, and to build up from the drawing a mental picture of the Object which is there represented, for Without the ability to analyse, to reason, and to Visualize a draftsman is lacking in the essential qualifications of his calling. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Descriptive Geometry Intersections, developments, etc., are usually included in the regular course in Mechanical Draw ing. It seems needless, therefore, to include them in this elementary text. If it is desirable to include more advanced work in the course of Descriptive Geometry, this book will form such a foundation that the student may readily interpret any higher treatise. H. C. B. It is desirable where possible that the text should be supplemented by blackboard demonstration and individual classroom instruction. The student should bear in mind that a thorough understanding of the methods of descriptive geometry is necessary to the proper interpretation of constructive drawing, and that in his study of the subject he should aim at grasping the methods rather than, at learning special text-book problems. This book was released on 2017-06-26 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Text-Book on Practical Solid or Descriptive Geometry, Vol. 2 The author, in writing this text-book, has endeavoured to meet the wants of both elementary and advanced students, and he believes that it will be found to contain all the de scriptive geometry which is usually required by engineering and architectural draughtsmen. But while making the book comprehensive, and illustrating it fully, it has not been made of an inconvenient size for use in large classes. Book Descriptive Geometry Vol 1 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Descriptive Geometry Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Charles Laban Adams and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Descriptive Geometry, Vol. 1 Descriptive geometry as taught in the Massachusetts In stitute of Technology is intended to lead to the solution of the graphical problems which ordinarily arise in engineering and architecture; to train the imagination as necessary in these professions; to cultivate the sense of accuracy; and to give facility in drafting and the ability to read working drawings with ease. Consequently this book, an outgrowth of printed notes, treats the subject from the standpoint of the drafts man rather than from that of the mathematician, placing reliance on graphical methods, and omitting analytical methods. Great importance is attached to the drafting exercises which supplement, at the Institute, the use of the book; in these the student works out a set of study plates which give printed data for a large number of original problems and applications. Considerable work in the projection of solids is given in Chapter VII., since the author believes better results will be obtained if, from time to time, some of this work be combined with the study of the problems on the line and plane. It has also been thought best to give problems in all four quadrants, but the book contains a much larger number of examples in the first and third for the benefit of students in architecture and engineering. In a limited sense, Descriptive Geometry may be defined to be a conventional method of representing on a plane objects which have three dimensions, so as to admit of an accurate determination of their size, form and position. 2. But position being relative, objects arc in respect of this undeterminable unless referred to other objects, which, for constructive purposes. ought to be of the simplest character and in positions readily conceived and comprehended. In Descriptive Geometry these latter objects arc two or more planes, termed the planes of projection. 3. These two planes intersect at right angles (Fig. t). one being in the position of an ordinary wall and the other in the position of the floor. The upright plane, V. is the vertical plane of projection, and the other plane H. at right angles to it. the horizontal plane of projection. The line GL in which they intersect is termed the ground-line. 4. The planes thus arranged are divided by their line of intersection, GL. into two parts each, and, in turn, divide space into four equal dihedral angles. This book was released on 2015-06-25 with total page 147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Descriptive Geometry, With a Theory of Shadows and of Perspective: Extracted From the French of G. Monge; To Which Is Added, a Description of the Principles and Practice of Isometrical Projection; The Whole Being Intended as an Introduction to the Application of Descriptive Geometry to Various Branches of the Arts Having been solicited by the Publisher of the Rudimentary Treatises to supply a series of works upon the application of Descriptive Geometry to various branches of the useful arts, it has been deemed advisable to precede them by a treatise on the Elements of Descriptive Geometry itself. This appeared the more necessary from the poverty of our scientific literature in works upon this elegant branch of study, which, from its many and important practical applications, appears to demand a far more prominent place in a system of elementary education than has hitherto been accorded to it in this country. To supply this want we have had recourse to the original work of G. Monge both because, having been the first to reduce it to a system, he must be regarded as the inventor of the art, and because that work was originally intended to occupy the very position here given to it as a prelude to a! series of works upon the application of Descriptive Geometry to the useful arts. A considerable portion of Monge's work does, however, avowedly go beyond this purpose, and, being limited in the extent and price of these treatises, this portion has been altogether omitted. Download or read book Elementary Course in Perspective Classic Reprint written by Sherman M. Turrill and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Course in Perspective In the following pages the author has endeavored to illustrate the mechanical application of the principles of Descriptive Geometry to the making of a perspective drawing. Two methods are used: the "Method by the Use of the Plan" where the orthographic projections of rays are used, and the "Method by Scale." In the former, all details should be drawn with instruments, especially if there is much mechanical labor entailed. On the other hand, the "Method by Scale" should serve the purpose, and is, in fact, the quicker process, where the accurate location of the leading or important points only is desired. The first method is discussed mainly for the assistance of the mechanical draftsman, whereas the second is intended for the artist and freehand draftsman. In writing this treatise the author has assumed that the student is more or less familiar with Descriptive Geometry. For these reasons the subject has been discussed from the point of view of a draftsman and the essential relations of points, lines, and planes have been treated in the third quadrant. The order of the material has been carefully considered and while there is some departure from traditional arrangement it is believed that the selection of material and its arrangement will be found both logical and conducive to a natural development of the subject. Many problems of a carefully graded character and of a practical "flavor" have been inserted at frequent intervals in the belief that such work is invaluable in fixing principles and promoting genuine interest.
