Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Chemistry for Coal-Mining Students N o alteration in the composition of an iron bar takes place when it is encircled by a current of electricity, though a certain change takes place which enables it to attract nails. The bar remains iron whether it is able to attract the nails or not, and Whatever change has taken place is not a change in composi tion. It is evident from this examination that bodies can undergo two kinds of change: one which does not involve an alteration in the composition of the body, and another which does. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Chemistry for Coal-Mining Students For many years I have delivered both popular and more or less systematic courses of lectures to deputies and other workers in coal mines, students who have little or no knowledge of chemistry but are keenly desirous of learning something of the subject which may be useful to them in their daily occupation. The ordinary text-book of chemistry does not meet their requirements, for it contains much that it is unnecessary for them to study, and much that it is desirable for them to know is not to be found in it. The present work has been prepared with the object of meeting the wants of these as well as of other students of coal-mining. It is really a compilation of those parts of chemistry, pure and applied, that are cognate to the coal-mining industry, and does not pretend to be a text-book of chemistry. Its arrangement is based on the plan I have adopted in my lectures, namely, to divide the subject into two parts. The first part includes the description of those elements that enter into the composition of coal, among the compounds of which are found all the gases and most of the principal substances met with in coal mines. In this part a certain amount of necessary chemical theory is introduced. The first nine chapters are devoted to this part and in them special attention has been given to such subjects as irrespirable and extinctive atmospheres, the occurrence and detection of poisonous gases and their action on the animal system, the safety lamp and its use in the detection of fire-damp, the hygrometer and its use. The second part is included in the next four chapters and treats of the chemistry of coal and coke, the coking process, by-products and their recovery, explosives, explosions of gases and coal dust. Elementary notions of thermo chemistry illustrated by simple reactions should be dwelt upon here and there in the course. Theories should not be considered until after the student has acquired some knowledge of the facts and laws of chemistry. Their presentation should be such as not to fail to give correct notions of their real value and their relation to facts and laws. Book A Guide to Elementary Chemistry for Beginners Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Guide to Elementary Chemistry for Beginners Classic Reprint written by Le Roy C. Cooley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to Elementary Chemistry for Beginners I know of but one way to teach a student how to acquire a real knowledge of nature, and that is, to fix his mind habit ually on things and events brought under his own eye, and direct him to the discovery of facts and principles for himself. The use of apparatus is, of course, indispensable if the student is thus to study phenomena instead of descriptions of phenomena, and the use of apparatus, by himself, is with out doubt the method which is most certain to stimulate his mind to the greatest activity. Laboratory study for students in high schools is rapidly growing in favor, but unfortunately, in many schools where chemistry is taught, the difficulties in the way of this method are still thought to be real. Even in these, chemistry to be truly useful should be presented as a study of phenomena, by experiments, instead of what some body has said about phenomena in books. I have therefore tried to construct a course of experiments suited to the use of the beginner, at his laboratory desk, and to the use of the teacher for his class of beginners, where facilities for students to work for themselves seem to be out of reach. Book Elementary Studies in Chemistry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Studies in Chemistry Classic Reprint written by Joseph Torrey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-25 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Studies in Chemistry Chemistry has had a varied history in its comparatively short career as an educational factor; but it has never yet' commanded universal respect, nor has it, I think, ever been authoritatively recognized as equal in educational value to Greek, Latin, and mathematics - the standards by which, whether we like it or not, all educational subjects have been measured in the past and will be measured for some time to come. The beneficial effects of chemistry as an element of variety, or as a sort of counter-irritant, have always been recognized; but this is not the same thing as according it educational value. When all is said and done, teachers and students alike recognize the fact that a year's work in chemistry as given in the average secondary school stands for a decidedly smaller outlay of energy than a year of Greek, Latin, or mathematics, and the feeling is a perfectly natural and logical one that the results measured in terms of mental discipline vary in about the same ratio. Download or read book A Manual of Elementary Chemistry Theoretical and Practical Classic Reprint written by George Fownes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 1072 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Elementary Chemistry, Theoretical and Practical The incessant changes which have characterized the sci ence of Chemistry since the introduction of the new nomen clature have rendered successive editions of Professor Fowne's work more representative of the editor's than of the author's views. Under these circumstances, Mr. Watts very properly contemplated the issue of a work of his own, based upon that of Professor Fowne's, but his untimely death prevented the full accomplishment of the project. A large portion of the work, however, was completed by the issue of a volume on Physical and Inorganic Chemistry, and it has seemed to the publishers a duty to lay before chemists and students the latest thoughts of so renowned a scientist. The volume has, therefore, been reprinted with Professor Fowne's Organic Chemistry, in a form which experience with many previous editions has proved to be popular with those for whom the work is intended. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Study of Chemistry Since the study of nature is divided in this way for mere convenience, and not because there is any division in nature itself, it often happens that the different sciences are very intimately related, and a thorough knowledge of any one of them involves a considerable acquaintance with several others. Thus the botanist must know something about animals as well as about plants; the student of human physiology must know something about physics as well as about the parts of the body. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Year Chemistry: A Text in Elementary Chemistry for Secondary Schools Thanks are gratefully accorded those of my pupils and other friends who by criticism or suggestion have aided in perfecting these pages. Mr. W. A. Stone, of Albany, N. Y., has read the manuscript; Mr. J. B. Merrill, of Woonsocket, R. I., has read both manuscript and proof; their kindly interest and helpful suggestions are gladly acknowledged. To my former teacher, Dr. George R. White, of Wellesley Hills, Mass, I am most deeply indebted; during my student days his sympathetic teaching opened up to me the allur ing field of chemistry, and without that introduction the development of this little text and the scientific hopefulness which has made its preparation more a pleasure than a burden would not have been possible. The author assumes the responsibility for the statements in this book. Any cor rections or comments on the text will be gratefully received.
