Book Elementary Biology Plant Animal Human Classic Reprint

Download or read book Elementary Biology Plant Animal Human Classic Reprint written by James Edward Peabody and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Biology Plant, Animal, Human In the judgment of the authors the kind of biology most worth while for the average boy or girl of fourteen years of age is not one based primarily on structure. Young stu dents are naturally more interested in activities or func tions than they are in mere form or structure. Hence, if we wish to work with, rather than against the grain, we must put function in the foreground of our discussion. Every boy and girl knows, too, that both plants and animals as well as human beings must have food and drink, and that they grow and reproduce their kind. It is relatively much easier, therefore, to unify a course like this along physiological lines than on the basis of morphology, or of homologies of structure, many of which are far too complicated to be made clear to young students. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Plant Biology All the activities of a plant, of an animal, or of man may be grouped in three classes. One class embraces the functions relating to the life of the individual organism. These functions have to do with the processes of eating, digesting, assimilating, taking in of oxygen, producing of energy, and excreting of waste matters. These may be called the nutritive functions, if the term is used in its broadest sense. To the second group of activities belong the functions that have to do with the perpetuation of the animal or plant species, and these are known as the reproductive functions. Living organisms, whether plant, animal, or human, may, in the third place, be considered in their relations to one another and especially to the general welfare of mankind. Thus we may discuss the beneficial or injurious effects, so far as man is concerned, of different kinds of insects or of various types of bacteria; we may learn of the activities of individual men or of groups of individuals which promote or retard the advance of human society; or we might, if we were to carry the study still farther, even seek to learn the ways by which the higher thoughts of mankind, as expressed in poetry, music, and religion, affect the development of the human race. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Plant: An Illustration of the Organic Life of the Animal A German naturalist, Mohl, selected for observation one of the fresh water algae, which had been previously figured and described as Conferva glomerata. This simple, thread-like plant was placed beneath the microscope, and the develop ment of the row of utricles of which its entire organization consists, watched. Very soon, Mohl observed that the inte rior face of the cavity of one of the utricles presented towards its middle part a fold, which increased almost imperceptibly until it ended by forming a complete wall dividing the cavity of the utricle into two parts. Each of these then dilated itself into a new utricle. Thus in the place of one cell there were two cells, which again divided in the same way, and so on. It is in this way that a single cell gives rise to a row of connect ed cells, when the division takes place in one direction, and to a plane or solid mass when it takes place in two or more di rections. There are other modes of increase which we shall notice in the ensuing pages; suffice it for the present to say, that their discovery originated in the investigation of crypto gamons plants of extreme simplicity of organization. Book Animal Life and Human Progress Classic Reprint

Download or read book Animal Life and Human Progress Classic Reprint written by Arthur Dendy and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Life and Human Progress It may at least be claimed for the lectures that they represent the latest views upon matters with which they deal. If these views appear in some cases to be subversive of modern biological doctrine it must be remembered that biological thought is progressive; were it otherwise the claims of bio logical science to a foremost place in our educational system might well be considered questionable. The doctrine of Organic Evolution, for example, looms large in several of the lectures, and a certain advance is to be observed from the position held by Charles Darwin and his immediate followers. The foundations of this doctrine, however, remain unshaken, and it is only the superstructure which has been, perhaps too hastily, erected upon them that is being more or less recon structed in accordance with recent investigations. The unexpectedly large audiences which were attracted to the lectures, and the great interest evinced in them at the time of delivery, seem to justify the hope that in their present form they may appeal to an even larger circle. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Biology: A Practical Text-Book Correlating Botany, Zoölogy, and Human Physiology The plan of this book recognizes first-year biology as a science founded upon certain underlying and basic principles. These principles underlie not only biology, but also organized society. The culmination of such an elementary course is avowedly the understanding of man, and the principles which hold together such a course should be chiefly physiological. The functions of all living things, plant or animal, movement, irritability, nutrition, respiration, excretion, and reproduction; the interrelation of plants and animals and their economic relations, all these as they relate to man should enter into a course in elementary biology. But to make plain these physiological processes, difficult even for an advanced student of biology to comprehend, the simplest method of demonstration is necessary. Plant physiology, because of the ease with which simple demonstrations can be made, is more profitable ground for beginners than is the physiology of animals. The foods which animals use are manufactured and used by green plants; the action of the digestive enzymes, the principle of osmosis, and the subject of reproduction can better be first handled from the botanical aspect. The topics just mentioned introduced from the standpoint of the botanist gain much by repetition from the zoological angle. The principles of physiology, after being applied in experiment to plants and animals, emerge in final clarity when applied at the last to man, - the most complex of all living things. One of the most important factors in successful science teaching is repetition. In a recent address President Remsen of Johns Hopkins University said: - "The most important defect in the teaching of chemistry to-day is the absence of repetition. There are too many fleeting impressions. We cover too much ground. The student gets only a veneer." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
