Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Arithmetic, in Decimal Currency: Designed for the Use of Canadian Schools With respect to the arrangement, a few words will sufiioe. In commencing the Elementary the pupil is assumed to have no previous knowledge of arithmetic, and accordingly great care has been expended in wording the definitions, explanations. Rules, &e., as concisely as possible, and in making preliminary problems of the very easiest description. The author has also fendeavored, at those parts of the subject at which the pupil ih. Variably meets with more or less trouble and difficulty, to prepare him for the consideration of the rule and the solution of problems on the slate by a series of simple mental exercises. It is not for a moment presumed that these mental exercises contain all that is necessary in the way of preparation: they are rather designed to serve as a sample of the introductory drilling through Which the class should enter the rule. The judicious teacher Will continue some such exercise as a mental training until he is convinced that his pupils can enter into the solution of questions on the slate without any such miserable artifices as the attempt to aid their ability to add or subtract by counting on their fingers or on the notches cut in their slate frames. The teacher is earnestly recommended to begin, at as early 3 period as practicable, drilling the pupils on the Mental Arithmetic at the end of the book. He Will find it the most efficient of all means for calling forth and cultivating the intellectual faculties of his scholars, and at the same time the most unfailing and success. Ful mode of making them thoroughly comprehend the principles of written arithmetic. Although the mental exercises alluded to contain a large number of problems, it is taken for granted the teacher Will not confine his class to these, but Will from time to time supply them with similar questions of his own construction. The problems throughout the book are all new, and no pain; have beenspared in reading the proof - fsheets to ensure the most rigid accuracy in every part. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Arithmetic: Octimal Notation History shows that many unsuccessful attempts have been made to discover a system of notation which would be simple and effective, and we wonder that a satisfactory basis has not been found. It is the more surprising, when we consider that every part of the universe suggests multiplication or division by two as a basis from which to start the building of a system of notation. This principle is exposed in the attempt to provide a Decimal currency, for the result is an Octimal coinage, viz., the Dollar, half, and quarter. And so, also, the attempt to decimalize the circle, for the quadrant must be found by the same process. In fact, there is nothing in the universe to suggest the use of ten as a radix. So many obstacles stand in the way of the successful application of the Decimal Notation, that it is astonishing it has not not been abandoned long ago. The Octimal System will be the means of considerably reducing the work in schools, by rendering much of the work unnecessary, which, owing to the defects of the Decimal System, is now required, and, in addition, will make arithmetical work a pleasure instead of a drudgery. Its introduction need cause no confusion, for the present units in use will be retained; viz., the Inch, the Pound, and the Dollar, while the methods of manipulation are the same as those already practiced.
