Book excerpt: Electra is a utopian type city and the envy of every city in the U.S. Its citizens enjoyed the benefits of good government and therefore, lulled into complacency by its many amenities, believing the good life would last forever without their participation in civic affairs and henceforth, neglected their right to vote. Their indifference to the political process left the door ajar for the criminal element to establish a foothold in city government. Gradually, the tentacles of corruption penetrated every office of city government. This once great city, is now degenerated into one of crime and vice, with the establishment of gambling, prostitution, and drugs. This story centers on two wealthy individuals who decided on restoring the city to its former greatness by combining their resources, influence, and expertise in a resourceful, dangerous, and questionable plan. Alvin Cain came from humble origins; and through his intelligence and fearless nature, he became a wealthy man and the architect of a daring plan to restore Electra to respectability. John Winthrop Hamilton III was born into wealth, a philanthropist and the moral guide of the two men; he had to be convinced that Alvin Cains method was the only viable plan that could succeed. Although daring, dangerous, and unethical, the plan was adopted.

Book excerpt: "Elektra Worthington is the lovely middle daughter of the eccentric, impoverished Worthington family. Her beauty means nothing to her except as her currency to return the Worthington name to its former glory of status, riches, and dominance in the ballrooms of Regency England. To this end, she will stop at nothing--even if she must kidnap a rich lord in the process. If this lucky gentleman is just returning from a long absence and knows nothing of the Worthington reputation, well, a girl shouldn't look a gift lord in the mouth ... right? Lord Aaron Arbogast, returning to England after a decade-old scandal--of which he was not truly guilty, but instead took the blame out of loyalty to a good friend--is the last of his line. He will someday become the Earl of Arbodean and inherit the estate ... if, that is, he can prove to his ailing grandfather that he is a reformed man."--from publisher's description.

Book excerpt: This "powerful, fresh, and unflinching" reimagining from the award-winning author of the Penelope trilogy breathes life into ancient myth and gives voice to the women who stand defiant in a world ruled by ruthless men (Jennifer Saint). On the isle of Ithaca, queen Penelope maintains a delicate balance of power. Many years ago, her husband Odysseus sailed to war with Troy and never came home. In his absence, Penelope uses all her cunning to keep the peace—a peace that is shattered by the return of Orestes, King of Mycenae, and his sister Elektra. Orestes' hands are stained with his mother's blood. Not so long ago, the son of Agamemnon took Queen Clytemnestra's life on Ithaca's sands. Now, wracked with guilt, he is slowly losing his mind. But a king cannot be seen to be weak, and Elektra has brought him to Ithaca to keep him safe from the ambitious men of Mycenae. Penelope knows destruction will follow in his wake as surely as the furies circle him. His uncle Menelaus, the battle-hungry king of Sparta, longs for Orestes' throne—and if he can seize it, no one will be safe from his violent whims. Trapped between two mad kings, Penelope fights to keep her home from being crushed by a war that stretches from Mycenae and Sparta to the summit of Mount Olympus itself. Her only allies are Elektra, desperate to protect her brother, and Helen of Troy, Menelaus' wife. And watching over them all is the goddess Aphrodite, who has plans of her own. Each woman has a secret. And their secrets will shape the world.

Book Mourning Becomes Electra

Download or read book Mourning Becomes Electra written by Eugene O'Neill and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-07-21 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Mourning Becomes Electra" is a play cycle written by prominent American playwright Eugene O'Neill. This work is the 20-century version of the ancient Greek tragedy "Oresteia" written by Aeschylus in the 5th century B.C. The Greek play concerns the murder of Agamemnon by Clytemnestra, the murder of Clytemnestra by Orestes, the trial of Orestes, and the end of the curse on the House of Atreus. The characters of the modern play parallel characters from the ancient Greek plays. For example, Agamemnon from the Oresteia becomes General Ezra Mannon. Clytemnestra becomes Christine, Orestes becomes Orin, etc. The play features murder, adultery, incestuous love, and revenge like the Greek tragedy.

Book Language and Character in Euripides Electra

Download or read book Language and Character in Euripides Electra written by Evert van Emde Boas and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-01-26 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of Euripides' Electra approaches the text through the lens of modern linguistics, marrying it with traditional literary criticism in order to provide new and informative means of analysing and interpreting what is considered to be one of the playwright's most controversial works. It is the first systematic attempt to apply a variety of modern linguistic theories, including conversation analysis, pragmatics, sociolinguistics (on gender and politeness), paroemiology, and discourse studies, to a single Greek tragedy. The volume focuses specifically on issues of characterization, demonstrating how Euripides shaped his figures through their use of language, while also using the same methodology to tackle some of the play's major textual issues. An introductory chapter treats each of the linguistic approaches used throughout the book, and discusses some of the general issues surrounding the play's interpretation. This is followed by chapters on the figures of the Peasant, Electra herself, and Orestes, in each case showing how their characterization is determined by their speaking style and their 'linguistic behaviour'. Three further chapters focus on textual criticism in stichomythia, on the messenger speech, and on the agon. By using modern linguistic methodologies to argue for a balanced interpretation of the Electra's main characters, the volume both challenges dominant scholarly opinion and enhances the literary interpretation of this well-studied play. Taking full account of recent and older work in both linguistics and classics, it will be of use to readers and researchers in both fields, and includes translations of all Greek cited and a glossary of linguistic terminology to make the text accessible to both.
