Book excerpt: The luminescence properties of cyclometallated iridium(III) complexes render them of interest, for example, as phosphorescent dopants in organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs), as photoactive units in solar energy conversion, and as biosensors. The vast majority comprise three bidentate ligands, archetypal examples being Ir(ppy)3 and [Ir(ppy)2(bpy)]+ (ppy = 2-phenylpyridine; bpy = 2,2'- bipyridine). The work described here explores the chemistry of iridium(III) complexes that contain a terdentate cyclometallating ligand. Most of the complexes studied have the general formula Ir(N C N)(N C)X, where N C N represents a terdentate ligand based on 1,3-di(2-pyridyl)benzene; N C a bidentate ligand such as ppy; and X is a monodentate ligand such as chloride, cyanide, thiocyanate or an acetylide. The synthetic methodology developed involves reaction of the N CH N proligand with iridium(III) chloride to give a dimer of the form [Ir(N C N)Cl(?-Cl)]2, which is cleaved upon treatment with a bidentate N CH ligand. The one remaining chloride ligand can then be exchanged for other monodentate ligands through silvercatalysed metathesis. Most of these complexes are highly luminescent, with quantum yields in degassed dichloromethane at room temperature between 0.2 and 0.9. The effect of substituents in both the aryl and pyridyl rings of the terdentate and bidentate ligands has been investigated, together with the influence of X. The emission energy has been shown to vary over a very wide range, from the blue to red regions (?max = 456 to 667 nm). The trends have been partially rationalised using time-dependent density functional theory and cyclic voltammetry. Some complexes have been incorporated into multi-layer OLEDs that display unusually high efficiency, particularly for the red-emitting devices. Selected rhodium(III) analogues have been prepared, together with related iridium(III) complexes incorporating bidentate N N (bpy) ligands. A preliminary investigation into the utility of these complexes for the construction of multimetallic assemblies has been made, through the introduction of bridging ligands into position X.

These compounds represent the first well-characterized examples of third-row metals being inserted successfully into the small corrole binding pocket; they possess a planar macrocycle, which neither saddles nor ruffles upon bromination, and are bound at the axial positions by either two amine ligands or one phosphine. Unlike their well-studied cobalt and rhodium analogues, whose redox activity is restricted primarily to the corrole ring, iridium corroles can be oxidized to produce an electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum that has extremely anisotropic g tensor components, implying mixing of the 5d orbitals into the oxidized ground state and opening the door to possible higher-valent iridium complexes. Detailed experimental and computational studies are presented showing that this oxidized ground state is actually mostly corrole-based, as has been found in the past for numerous other supposedly high-valent corrole compounds, but the percentage of iridium character varies from 10 to 18% and tracks with the electron-donating ability of the ligand. Additionally, the unique (among corrole complexes) near-IR phosphorescence of Ir(III) corroles is presented and discussed. Iridium(III) corroles phosphoresce with lifetimes ranging from hundreds of nanoseconds to a few microseconds at room temperature, with slightly longer lifetimes at low temperature. Unfortunately, the quantum yields of phosphorescence are low, 1% or less, and this appears to be due to an exceptionally slow set of radiative rates for the corroles. An examination of the reactivity of ammine-ligated Ir(III) corroles is also described. These compounds can be oxidized in the presence of an ammonia source to form novel six-coordinate iridium(III) azaporphyrins in an unprecedented chemical transformation. The characterization and properties of these iridium azaporphyrin complexes are detailed as well, with a focus on nuclear magnetic resonance characterization techniques and a discussion of the red phosphorescence of the azaporphyrins.

A series of monomeric bis(imino)pyridine cobalt dinitrogen complexes was investigated using a combination of 1H NMR and infrared spectroscopies, X-ray crystallography, EPR spectroscopy, solution and solid state magnetic measurements and density functional theory. The neutral bis(imino)pyridine cobalt dinitrogen complexes have doublet ground states and are best described as low-spin cobalt(I) centers with an unpaired electron on the singly reduced chelate, while the anionic bis(imino)pyridine cobalt dinitrogen complexes are also best described as low-spin cobalt(I) centers with dianionic chelates. These investigations established that reduction of monochloride precursors occurs at the metal center, in contrast to the related bis(imino)pyridine iron bis(dinitrogen) complex, (iPrPDI)Fe(N2)2, where reduction of the chelate is observed. A series of bis(imino)pyridine iron imide complexes was also investigated. A combination of Xray crystallography, variable temperature SQUID magnetization data and Mössbauer spectroscopy was used to elucidate the electronic structures of these complexes. In contrast to the previously reported N-aryl substituted bis(imino)pyridine iron imide complexes, where an iron(III) metal center and a singly reduced chelate was observed, an iron(IV) metal center and a triplet diradical chelate was observed for N-alkyl substituted bis(imino)pyridine iron imide complexes. For (iPrPDI)FeN(2Ad) (iPrPDI = 2,6-(2,6-iPr2-C6H3-N=CMe)2C5H3N), thermal spin crossover from S = 0 to S = 1 was observed when warming from 15 K to 200 K. (ArPDI)FeNR compounds with an S = 0 ground state promoted C-H bond activation of both imine methyl groups of the bis(imino)pyridine ligand. The C-H bond activation with (iPrPDI)FeN(CyOct) was firstorder in iron with a rate constant of k = 3.4(2)x10-5 s-1 at 25 °C and a primary kinetic isotope effect of 3.3(2), consistent with a rate-determining step of intramolecular C-H bond activation. In contrast, no C-H bond activation of the ligand was observed for the iron imide complexes that are S = 1 at 23 °C. The reactivity of bis(imino)pyridine iron imide compounds with hydrogen, silanes, terminal alkynes and organic azides, and the electronic structures of the resulting iron complexes, was also investigated.
