Library patrons are predominately served by support staff that is expected to know how to help patrons select and use digital resources. Yet most library support staff (LSS) has not had training to become proficient in finding, using, and instructing others in the abundance of the digital resources of websites, databases, e-texts, digital libraries and their related technologies. Library Technology and Digital Resources: An Introduction for Support Staff is both a text for professors who teach in library support staff programs and an introductory reference manual for support staff who work in libraries. This book will guide the LSS to be able to: Distinguish key features and enhancements found among vendors and providers of digital libraries, digital collections, databases, and e-texts; Plan, budget, fund and write grants for digital resources; Understand the complexity and options of licensing and usage agreements for digital resources; Know copyright permissions and acceptable use guidelines for digital resources. Understand the basic technologies that support library digital resources including network structures, software applications, and protocols; Distinguish between directories and search engines as they relate to digital resources as well as be able to employ advance search skills effectively; Explore the resources of global, national, and state digital libraries and their collections; Use government databases and other digitized systems and information sources; Find exemplary digital resources though other agencies such as museums, university collections and other sources that librarians can share with patrons. Create local digital resources of primary and historical materials and artifacts with metadata and cataloging for searchable access. Interpret meaning from library digital resources using visual literacy skills. Promote library digital resources through a variety of means including social media and online options.

Digital media and technology have become culturally and economically powerful parts of contemporary middle-class American childhoods. Immersed in various forms of digital media as well as mobile and Web-based technologies, young people today appear to develop knowledge and skills through participation in media. This MacArthur Report examines the ways in which afterschool programs, libraries, and museums use digital media to support extracurricular learning. It investigates how these three varieties of youth-serving organizations have incorporated technological infrastructure and digital practices into their programs; what types of participation and learning digital practices support; and how research in digital media and learning can contribute to better integration of technology within and across these organizations. The authors review a range of programs (including the long-running Computer Clubhouse movement, established in 1993 in partnership with MIT's Media Lab), and then use the idea of "media ecologies" to investigate the role that digital media play (or could play) in these "intermediary spaces for learning." They call for less anecdotal, more empirical and methodologically sound studies to help us understand the affordances of digital media for learning within and across these programs; for research focused on the relationship between digital media and the effectiveness of youth-serving organizations; and for further study of schools within childhood media ecologies.

Book excerpt: The Council on Library and Information Resources' (CLIR's) College Libraries Committee began its study of the innovative uses of technology on college campuses in the spring of 1998. A letter was sent to heads of libraries of colleges and mid-sized universities in the United States encouraging librarians who felt their institutions had used technology in a way that significantly enhanced teaching and learning and who were willing to host a study team for a site visit to apply to the project. Nine campuses were selected out of the 41 applicants and site visits were conducted between September 1998 and January 1999. A two-day conference in March 1999 focused on the environment that is most conducive to organizational change. Representatives from each of the nine case study sites were present to discuss which features of the programs they studied had been most successful. Sites included: (1) California Institute of Technology, Sherman Fairchild Library - A New High-Tech Library; (2) Carnegie Mellon University - A New Electronic Archives; (3) Indiana University/Purdue University at Indianapolis - Librarian-Scholar Collaboration in Learning Communities; (4) Lafayette College - An Interdisciplinary Team Approach; (5) Point Park College and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Library Center - A Public-Private Library Partnership; (6) Southern Utah University, Gerald R. Sherratt Library - One Librarian Introduces EAD (Encoded Archival Description) Finding Aids; (7) Stevens Institute of Technology - Electronic Access, Not Subscriptions; (8) Wellesley College, Margaret Clapp Library - A New High-Tech Center; and (9) West Virginia Wesleyan College - Laptops for Every Student. Four speakers provided additional perspective on the case studies. William Haden opened the conference by noting that with rapid developments in information technology, colleges today face new pressures to remain relevant, competitive, and effective. This was followed by two presentations, by Susan Jurow and Barbara Hill, on making change in higher education. Brian Hawkins then prepared participants with observations on the transformation of higher education. The presentations are provided in part 1 of this report, as are summaries of the ensuing discussion and recommendations for follow-up activities. Case studies appear in part 2 of the report.
