Book Nondestructive Evaluation of Titanium Alloys ESCA Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis ISS Ion Scattering Spectroscopy and SIMS Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry Examination of Titanium Alloy Solid Surfaces

Download or read book Nondestructive Evaluation of Titanium Alloys ESCA Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis ISS Ion Scattering Spectroscopy and SIMS Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry Examination of Titanium Alloy Solid Surfaces written by G. D. Mateescu and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report will begin with the description of the basic principles and instrumentation of ESCA (Electron Spectroscopy for Chemical Analysis), ISS (Ion Scattering Spectroscopy), and SIMS (Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry). Particular emphasis will be placed on those aspects which are of immediate relevance to the nondestructive evaluation of titanium alloys such as: the concept of chemical shift in ESCA, the relative surface probing sensitivities of ESCA, ISS, and SIMS, the depth profiling capabilities of these techniques. Preliminary results show that, even at moderate resolution, oxygen first orbit photoelectron spectra of at least three types of oxygen are obtained for the five different Ti alloy samples. Sputtering of the intense Ti2p photoelectron signals corresponds to an oxide which completely covers the surface of the specimen. Carbon 1s spectra served to monitor the degree of contamination. ISS-SIMS measurements provided a better insight into the Oxygen/Ti ratio on the surface and in the subsurface layers. Preliminary investigations demonstrate the feasibility of in situ studies of fracture surfaces. Instrumental modifications for the execution of such experiments are now in progess. Our conclusion is that, working in ultrahigh vacuum conditions, ESCA-ISS-SIMS (combined, perhaps, with conventional mass spectrometry) constitute adequate means to analyze the degree of surface and interstitial oxidation of Ti alloys.

Book Electron and Ion Spectroscopy of Solids

Download or read book Electron and Ion Spectroscopy of Solids written by L. Fiermans and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 485 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Surface physics and chemistry have in recent years become one of the most active fields in solid state research. A number of techniques have been developed, and both the experimental aspect and the correlated theory are evolving at an extremely fast rate. Electron and ion spectroscopy are of major importance in this development. In this volume, which contains edited and extended versions of eight sets of lectures given at the NATO Advanced Study Institute held at Ghent, Belgium, from August 29 to September 9, 1977, a re view of the state of the art in these fields is given from both an experimental and a theoretical point of view. Electron emission techniques such as UPS (ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy), XPS (x-ray photoemission spectroscopy), and AES (Auger electron spectroscopy) constitute the major part of this volume, reflecting the fact that they continue to be the most widely applied surface techniques. Recent developments in the application of synchrotron radiation to angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy are extensively covered, from an experimental point of view by Prof. W. E. Spicer (Stanford University, U.S.A.) and from a theoretical point of view by Dr. A. Liebsch (Kernforschungsanlage Julich, Germany). Emphasis is put on the study of energy bands in layered structures, and on chemisorption on well-defined surfaces. Chemisorption and catalysis on metals is treated in detail by Prof. G. Ertl (Universitat Munchen, Germany). This chapter contains a review of the application of the different surface techniques to specific surface systems.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 28 (thesis year 1 983) a total of 10,661 theses titles from 26 Canadian and 197 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 28 reports theses submitted in-1983, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Auger electron spectroscopy is rapidly developing into the single most powerful analytical technique in basic and applied science.for investigating the chemical and structural properties of solids. Its ex plosive growth beginning in 1967 was triggered by the development of Auger analyzers capable of de tecting one atom layer of material in a fraction of a second. Continued growth was guaranteed firstly by the commercial availability of apparatus which combined the capabilities of scanning electron mi croscopy and ion-mill depth profiling with Auger analysis, and secondly by the increasing need to know the atomistics of many processes in fundamental research and engineering applications. The expanding use of Auger analysis was accompanied by an increase in the number of publications dealing with it. Because of the developing nature of Auger spectroscopy, the articles have appeared in many different sources covering diverse disciplines, so that it is extremely difficult to discover just what has or has not been subjected to Auger analysis. In this situation, a comprehensive bibliography is obviou-sly useful to those both inside and outside the field. For those in the field, this bibliography should be a wonderful time saver for locating certain references, in researching a particular topic, or when considering various aspects of instrumentation or data analysis. This bibliography not only provides the most complete listing of references pertinent to surface Auger analysis available today, but it is also a basis for extrapolating from past trends to future expectations.

Book Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry and Auger Electron Spectroscopy Semiquantitative Analysis of Metal Alloys

Download or read book Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometry and Auger Electron Spectroscopy Semiquantitative Analysis of Metal Alloys written by LE. Davis and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS) and Auger electron spectroscopy (AES) data were obtained for metal alloys of known bulk composition. The measurements were made from the same surface regions of the alloys and then compared to measurements of elemental standards to facilitate quantitative analysis. The SIMS data were obtained with and without a residual oxygen base pressure to investigate the role of oxygen enhancement in determining surface composition. Compositions of a nimonic and lead-bronze alloy as determined by AES and SIMS were compared and the differences discussed in terms of secondary ion yields and sputtering effects.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume and its companion Volume 2 document the proceedings of the Symposium on Surface Contamination: Its Genesis, Detection and Control held in Washington, D.C., September 10-13, 1978. This Symposium was a part of the 4th International Symposium on Contamination Control held under the auspices of the International Committee of Contamination Control Societies, and the Institute of Environmental Sciences (U.S.A.) was the official host. The ubiquitous nature of surface contamination causes concern to everyone dealing with surfaces, and the world of surfaces is wide and open-ended. The technological areas where surface clean ing is of cardinal importance are too many and very diversified. To people working in areas such as adhesion, composites, adsorp tion, friction, lubrication, soldering, device fabrication, printed circuit boards, etc., surface contamination has always been a bete noire. In short, people dealing with surfaces are afflicted with molysmophobiat, and rightfully so. In the past, the subject of surface contamination had been discussed in various meetings, but this symposium was hailed as the most comprehensive symposium ever held on this important topic, as the technical program comprised 70 papers by more than 100 authors from 10 countries. The symposium was truly international in scope and spirits and was very well attended. The attendees represented a broad spectrum of backgrounds, interests, and pro fessional affiliations, but all had a common interest and concern about surface contamination and cleaning.
