Book excerpt: A comparative study was made of the structure of thin films deposited in vacuum by simultaneous vaporization of certain metals with polycaproamide and of the same metals alone. The purpose of the study was to evaluate the process of formation of composite coatings which may solve certain problems of electronics and radio communications. Thin films were deposited on collodion or quartz film substrates by high-speed vaporization in vacuum of given amounts of the components. The composite films obtained may be divided into two groups according to the observed electron microscopic refraction patterns and electron micrographs. The first group include the films obtained with polycaproamide and sodium, potassium, or silver. The composite films of the second group differed sharply in structure from the films of their metallic components, such as iron, aluminum, or lead. The composite material displayed an amorphous structure in contrast to the crystalline structure of pure metallic films. (Author).

A novel blister test based in local gas implantation was developed to investigate the adhesion of ceramic films. Changes in the porosity of oxides (ZrO2 and AL203) and silica-based coatings (composites and low-k dielectrics) were also subjects of this work."
