Book The Ionization of Hydrogen and of Hydrogenic Positive Ions by Electron Impact

This book was released on 1966 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calculations of the ionization cross sections of hydrogen and of hydrogenic positive ions are described in which the initial state is either the ground or the excited 2s state. The first procedures used are the Born (ii) and Born-exchange approximations. These results are compared with other theoretical calculations and with experimental data. It is seen that for the case of ionization of hydrogen from its ground state, none of the theoretical results is in good agreement with the experimental data. A certain defect of the theory is then corrected by adopting a third procedure for this case, in which an angle-dependent Coulomb potential is used in the description of the final state of the e-H ionization problem. It is then found that, despite the sounder theoretical footing of this latter calculation, no improved agreement with experimental data is obtained except in the near threshold region. Convenient formulae are presented which represent the best data for the ionization cross sections and the associated reaction rates for the case of an initial Maxwellian distribution of velocities. Book Excitation and Ionization of Hydrogen Atoms by Electron Impact

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classical cross sections of Gryzinski for the excitation and ionization of atomic hydrogen by electron impacts are compared with existing experimental and theoretical cross sections. For excitation from the ground to the first excited states of atomic hydrogen, the classical cross section reproduces the experimental cross section to within a factor of 2 from the excitation threshold to an electron impact energy of about 20 atomic units. For ionization from the ground state of atomic hydrogen, the classical cross section reproduces the experimental cross section to within a factor of 2 from 0.02 atomic units above threshold to about 400 atomic units. A comparison of the classical cross sections with all available Born-approximation cross sections shows that although the classical cross sections are always smaller, they agree quite well with the Born cross sections except at very high energies. However for energies less than 100 atomic units the classical cross sections always agree with the Born cross sections to better than a factor of three. A comparison of experimental 'electron-ion' recombination coefficients and theoretical recombination coefficients, obtained by using the classical cross sections, suggests that at low energies, the classical cross sections for transitions between low excited levels cannot be in error by more than a factor of 2. Book Measurements of Cross Sections and Resonance Structures Following Electron impact Excitation

Download or read book Measurements of Cross Sections and Resonance Structures Following Electron impact Excitation written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 15 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report high-resolution measurements of electron impact excitation and ionization cross sections for the Na-like ions Kr{sup 25+} and Xe{sup 43+}. Ions with ionization states centered on the Na-like configurations were produced in an electron beam ion trap (EBIT) using electrons with energies below the L shell ionization thresholds. The Na-like ions were exposed to an electron beam with an energy between 3 and 7 keV. The Na- and Ne-like ions were then extracted and their intensities measured as a function of the electron beam energy. Theoretical ionization cross sections were calculated using relativistic distorted wave methods. Complex resonance structures that appear in the computed cross sections are observed in the experimental results. These results are the first experimental observation of resonant-excitation-double-autoionization (REDA) in highly charged high-Z ions.
