Book Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in Anisotropic Plasmas Along the Direction of a Static Magnetic Field

Download or read book Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in Anisotropic Plasmas Along the Direction of a Static Magnetic Field written by M. P. BACHYNSKI and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental and theoretical investigation of the propagation of electromagnetic waves in an anisotropic plasma along the direction of the applied static magnetic field was conducted. Experimental measurements of electron density and attenuation using circularly polarized waves (left-hand or right-hand) show good agreement with theory and with each other over all ranges of parameters. For the right-hand mode at radio frequencies above the electron cyclotron frequency, 'cut-off' occurs at much lower electron densities than in the absence of a magnetic field. For the left-hand wave, both the phase change and attenuation decrease with magnetic field and the wave is affected much less by the plasma than the right-hand wave over the range of parameters encountered in the experiments. The theory of propagation of a linearly polarized wave in a lossy anisotropic plasma was derived. Investigations of the collisional effects on e-m wave propagation in the region of the electron cyclotron frequency show a reversal in phase of the wave passing through the plasma as the electron density is increased. This phenomenon occurs only for the right-hand circularly polarized wave at frequencies very near but just above the electron cyclotron frequency. Collisional effects based on cold plasma theory can account for this behavior.

Book Electromagnetics of Time Varying Complex Media

Download or read book Electromagnetics of Time Varying Complex Media written by Dikshitulu K. Kalluri and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-07-29 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent advances in the fields of materials science and electromagnetics indicate that materials can be synthesized with any desired electromagnetic properties. Electromagnetics of Complex Media provides the appropriate understanding of optimum properties for a given application, addressing the needs of researchers who study electromagnetics as a base for those disciplines using complex materials. Examples include electrooptics, plasma science and engineering, microwave engineering, and solid state devices. The book emphasizes these aspects: Dispersive medium Tunneling of power through a plasma slab by evanescent waves Characteristic waves in an anisotropic medium Transient medium and frequency shifting Green's function for unlike anisotropic media Perturbation technique for unlike anisotropic media Adiabatic analysis for modified source wave All of the above topics use one-dimensional models. Brief discussions also include chiral media, surface waves, and periodic media. The text focuses on bringing out the major effects due to each kind of complexity in the medium properties. A plasma column in the presence of a static magnetic field is at once dispersive, anisotropic, and inhomogeneous - thus the author uses plasma as the basic medium to illustrate some aspects of the transformation of an electromagnetic wave by a complex medium. Early chapters use a mathematical model that usually has one kind of complexity. The medium is often assumed to be unbounded in space or has a simple plane boundary. The field variables and the parameters are often assumed to vary in one spatial coordinate. This eliminates the use of heavy mathematics and permits the focus to be on the effect. Electromagnetics of Complex Media aims to stimulate experimental and additional theoretical and numerical work on the effects that can be obtained by the temporal and spatial modification of the magnetoplasma parameters. The book also provides the new researcher with a quick primer into the theory of using magnetoplasmas for the coherent generation of tunable radiation.

Book Electromagnetic Wave Propagation and Radiation Characteristics of Anisotropic Plasmas

Download or read book Electromagnetic Wave Propagation and Radiation Characteristics of Anisotropic Plasmas written by RADIO CORP OF AMERICA MOORESTOWN N J. and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study was made of electromagnetic properties of homogeneous anisotropic plasmas. The propagation characteristics of electromagnetic waves in anisotropic plasmas are examined for propagation parallel to and perpendicular to the applied d-c magnetic field. The existence of very low frequency pass-bands due to ion effects is noted. Faraday rotation due to the earth's magnetic field is considered for the ionosphere and the plasma sheath of a re-entry vehicle. A generalized and exact form of Kirchhoff's law is used to obtain the absorptivity of a plasma from its electromagnetic properties. The absorptivity of an isotropic and anisotropic plasma slab is computed for normal incidence and the effects of electron collision frequency, slab thickness, stop-bands and boundary effects on the radiation spectrum is presented. Book Reflection of Circularly Polarized Electromagnetic Waves from an Anisotropic Plasma

Download or read book Reflection of Circularly Polarized Electromagnetic Waves from an Anisotropic Plasma written by M. P. Bachynski and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reflection of both right-hand and left-hand circularly polarized plane electromagnetic waves, normally incident along the direction of an imposed static magnetic field in an anisotropic plasma, was investigated. Detailed measurements at a frequency of 9.2 Gc of the intensity and phase of the wave reflected from a helium afterglow plasma over wide ranges of plasma frequency and electron cyclotron frequency were carried out. The measured reflected power varied from less than one percent of the incident power to complete reflection and large undulations in both intensity and phase of the reflected wave with changing electron density and magnetic field were observed. Comparison with theory based on a simple sharply bounded uniform plasma slab shows good agreement for the general nature of the dependence of the reflected wave on the plasma properties. The exact electron densities corresponding to the maxima and minima and the absolute values of the intensity and phase of the reflected wave are not accurately predicted by this simple theoretical model. In the region of the electron cyclotron frequency, for an incident right-hand circularly polarized wave, the reflected signal undergoes a reduced variation in phase and the intensity after attaining a maximum is observed to decrease with increasing electron density. Book Electrodynamics of Density Ducts in Magnetized Plasmas

Download or read book Electrodynamics of Density Ducts in Magnetized Plasmas written by I G Kondratiev and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-08-16 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing a systematic and self-contained treatment of excitation, propagation and re- emission of electromagnetic waves guided by density ducts in magnetized plasmas, this book describes in detail the theoretical basis of the electrodynamics of ducts. The classical dielectric-waveguide theory in open guiding systems in magnetoplasma is subjected to rigorous generalization. The authors emphasize the conceptual physical and mathematical aspects of the theory, while demonstrating its applications to problems encountered in actual practice. The opening chapters of the book discuss the underlying physical phenomena, outline some of the results obtained in natural and artificial density ducts, and describe the basic theory crucial to understanding the remainder of the book. The more specialized and complex topics dealt with in subsequent chapters include the theory of guided wave propagation along axially uniform ducts, finding the field excited by the source in the presence of a duct, excitation of guided modes, the asymptotic theory of wave propagation along axially nonuniform ducts, and mode re-emission from a duct. The full wave theory is used throughout most of the book to ensure consistency, and the authors start with simpler cases and gradually increase the complexity of the treatment.

Book Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in Uniaxial Plasmas with Curved Magnetic Field

Download or read book Electromagnetic Wave Propagation in Uniaxial Plasmas with Curved Magnetic Field written by Henry J Stalzer (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The effect of the curvature of an impressed static magnetic field on the propagation and diffraction of electromagnetic waves in a uniaxial plasma is studied. The model chosen for the analysis is two dimensional with the magnetic field lines consisting of concentric circles. Ray optical techniques are used to construct approximate solutions to the field radiated from a line source in the unbounded medium and one into which a perfectly conducting or a transparent cylinder is introduced. The radiated, reflected, refracted and diffracted fields calculated by ray optics are then validated by obtaining exact integral representations for the solutions to several canonical problems and evaluating these integrals asymptotically for high frequencies. The agreement between the ray optical results and the asymptotic approximations validates the ray optical procedure and suggests its usefulness in obtaining approximate solutions to more general configurations which are not amenable to a rigorous analysis. The center of curvature of the magnetic field lines in the unbounded medium acts as a scatterer and is shown to be analogous to the vertex of a wedge. When cylindrical boundaries are introduced, the diffracted field consists of creeping rays which are excited by rays which are incident either tangentially or at the critical angle. (Author).
