Book Electromagnetic Theory and Geometrical Optics Classic Reprint

Download or read book Electromagnetic Theory and Geometrical Optics Classic Reprint written by Morris Kline and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electromagnetic Theory and Geometrical Optics I. Introduction. It may seem unnecessary at this late date to discuss the relationship of electromagnetic theory to geometrical Op tics. The content of both fields is well known and everyone knows also that geometrical Optics is the limit for vanishing wave length of electromagnetic theory. Moreover, since Maxwell's theory supersedes the older geometrical optics, presumably, then, geometrical optics could be discarded. The optical industry continues to use it but per haps that is because it is behind the times. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Principles of Optics is one of the classic science books of the twentieth century, and probably the most influential book in optics published in the past 40 years. The new edition is the first ever thoroughly revised and expanded edition of this standard text. Among the new material, much of which is not available in any other optics text, is a section on the CAT scan (computerized axial tomography), which has revolutionized medical diagnostics. The book also includes a new chapter on scattering from inhomogeneous media which provides a comprehensive treatment of the theory of scattering of scalar as well as of electromagnetic waves, including the Born series and the Rytov series. The chapter also presents an account of the principles of diffraction tomography - a refinement of the CAT scan - to which Emil Wolf, one of the authors, has made a basic contribution by formulating in 1969 what is generally regarded to be the basic theorem in this field. The chapter also includes an account of scattering from periodic potentials and its connection to the classic subject of determining the structure of crystals from X-ray diffraction experiments, including accounts of von Laue equations, Bragg's law, the Ewald sphere of reflection and the Ewald limiting sphere, both generalized to continuous media. These topics, although originally introduced in connection with the theory of X-ray diffraction by crystals, have since become of considerable relevance to optics, for example in connection with deep holograms. Other new topics covered in this new edition include interference with broad-band light, which introduces the reader to an important phenomenon discovered relatively recently by Emil Wolf, namely the generation of shifts of spectral lines and other modifications of spectra of radiated fields due to the state of coherence of a source. There is also a section on the so-called Rayleigh-Sommerfield diffraction theory which, in recent times, has been finding increasing popularity among optical scientists. There are also several new appendices, including one on energy conservation in scalar wavefields, which is seldom discussed in books on optics. The new edition of this standard reference will continue to be invaluable to advanced undergraduates, graduate students and researchers working in most areas of optics.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Optics It is in precisely these two respects that the Lehrbuch der Optik by Professor Paul Drude (leipzig, 1900) particularly excels. Therefore in making this book, written by one who has contributed so largely to the progress which has been made in Optics within the last ten years, accessible to the English-speaking public, the translators have rendered a very important service to English and American students of Physics. Book Classical Electromagnetic Radiation Third Edition

Download or read book Classical Electromagnetic Radiation Third Edition written by Mark A. Heald and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2013-04-22 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This newly corrected, highly acclaimed text offers intermediate-level juniors and first-year graduate students of physics a rigorous treatment of classical electromagnetics. The authors present a very accessible macroscopic view of classical electromagnetics that emphasizes integrating electromagnetic theory with physical optics. The survey follows the historical development of physics, culminating in the use of four-vector relativity to fully integrate electricity with magnetism. Starting with a brief review of static electricity and magnetism, the treatment advances to examinations of multipole fields, the equations of Laplace and Poisson, dynamic electromagnetism, electromagnetic waves, reflection and refraction, and waveguides. Subsequent chapters explore retarded potentials and fields and radiation by charged particles; antennas; classical electron theory; interference and coherence; scalar diffraction theory and the Fraunhofer limit; Fresnel diffraction and the transition to geometrical optics; and relativistic electrodynamics. A basic knowledge of vector calculus and Fourier analysis is assumed, and several helpful appendices supplement the text. An extensive Solutions Manual is also available.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Theory of Optics There does not exist to-day in the English language a general advanced text upon Optics which embodies the important advances in both theory and experiment which have been made within the last decade. Preston's "Theory of Light" is, at present the only general text upon Optics in English. Satisfactory as this work is for the purposes of the general student, it approaches the subject from the historical standpoint and contains no fundamental development of some of the important theories which are fast becoming the basis of modern optics. Thus it touches but slightly upon the theory of optical instruments - a branch of optics which has received at the hands of Abbe and his followers a most extensive and beautiful development; it gives a most meagre presentation of the electromagnetic theory a theory - which has recently been brought into particular prominence by the work of Lorentz, Zeeman, and others; and it contains no discussion whatever of the application of the laws of thermodynamics to the study of radiation. The book by Heath, the last edition of which appeared in 1895, well supplies the lack in the field of Geometrical Optics, and Bassets "Treatise on Physical Optics"(1892) is a valuable and advanced presentation of many aspects of the wave theory. Book Geometric Optics on Phase Space

Download or read book Geometric Optics on Phase Space written by Kurt Bernardo Wolf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-07-21 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Symplectic geometry, well known as the basic structure of Hamiltonian mechanics, is also the foundation of optics. In fact, optical systems (geometric or wave) have an even richer symmetry structure than mechanical ones (classical or quantum). The symmetries underlying the geometric model of light are based on the symplectic group. Geometric Optics on Phase Space develops both geometric optics and group theory from first principles in their Hamiltonian formulation on phase space. This treatise provides the mathematical background and also collects a host of useful methods of practical importance, particularly the fractional Fourier transform currently used for image processing. The reader will appreciate the beautiful similarities between Hamilton's mechanics and this approach to optics. The appendices link the geometry thus introduced to wave optics through Lie methods. The book addresses researchers and graduate students.
