Book Electromagnetic Pulse Propagation in Casual Dielectrics

Download or read book Electromagnetic Pulse Propagation in Casual Dielectrics written by Kurt E. Oughstun and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-10-17 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research monograph presents a systematic treatment of the theory of the propagation of transient electromagnetic fields (such as optical pulses) through dielectric media which exhibit both dispersion and absorption. The work divides naturally into two parts. Part I presents a summary of the fundamental theory of the radiation and propagation of rather general electromagnetic waves in causal, linear media which are homogeneous and isotropic but which otherwise have rather general dispersive and absorbing properties. In Part II, we specialize on the propagation of a plane, transient electromagnetic field in a homogeneous dielectric. Although we have made some contributions to the fundamental theory given in Part I, most of the results of our own research appear in Part II. The purpose of the theory presented in Part II is to predict and to explain in explicit detail the dynamics of the field after it has propagated far enough through the medium to be in the mature-dispersion regime. It is the subject of a classic theory, based on the research conducted by A. Sommerfeld and L.

Book Beam Shaping and Control with Nonlinear Optics

Download or read book Beam Shaping and Control with Nonlinear Optics written by F. Kajzar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 1998-04-30 with total page 479 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The field of nonlinear optics, which has undergone a very rapid development since the discovery of lasers in the early sixties, continues to be an active and rapidly developing - search area. The interest is mainly due to the potential applications of nonlinear optics: - rectly in telecommunications for high rate data transmission, image processing and recognition or indirectly from the possibility of obtaining large wavelength range tuneable lasers for applications in industry, medicine, biology, data storage and retrieval, etc. New phenomena and materials continue to appear regularly, renewing the field. This has proven to be especially true over the last five years. New materials such as organics have been developed with very large second- and third-order nonlinear optical responses. Imp- tant developments in the areas of photorefractivity, all optical phenomena, frequency conv- sion and electro-optics have been observed. In parallel, a number of new phenomena have been reported, some of them challenging the previously held concepts. For example, solitons based on second-order nonlinearities have been observed in photorefractive materials and frequency doubling crystals, destroying the perception that third order nonlinearities are - quired for their generation and propagation. New ways of creating and manipulating nonl- ear optical materials have been developed. An example is the creation of highly nonlinear (second-order active) polymers by static electric field, photo-assisted or all-optical poling. Nonlinear optics involves, by definition, the product of electromagnetic fields. As a con- quence, it leads to the beam control.

Book Wideband Pulse Propagation in Linear Dispersive Bio dielectrics Using Fourier Transforms

Download or read book Wideband Pulse Propagation in Linear Dispersive Bio dielectrics Using Fourier Transforms written by John P. Franzen and published by . This book was released on 1999-02 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We describe calculations of a plane-wave pulse train of finite duration in a linear lossy dispersive dielectric half-space by means of Fourier integral transforms. The polarization response of Debye and Lorentz media to a finite number of sinewave pulses and the response of a Lorentz medium to a single Gaussian modulated sinewave pulse are given. These solutions are formulated for the case of normal incidence to the planar boundary of a dielectric half-space. Our results show that the Fourier transform accurately reproduces precursor phenomena previously observed for infinitely periodic pulse trains using the Fourier series method extending the analysis to a periodic waveforms. These results can be computed to arbitrary accuracy because the Fourier integral representation of the propagated pulse is exact, i.e. no analytical or physical approximations are used to arrive at the time-domain solution. We believe that this numerical tool will be useful in developing physical intuition about the dynamics of pulse propagation in bio-tissue which is now made possible by the availability of high-speed computer hardware.

Book High Frequency Pulse Propagation in Nonlinear Dielectric Materials

Download or read book High Frequency Pulse Propagation in Nonlinear Dielectric Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We consider a variational formulation based on Maxwell's equations for the propagation of high frequency (gigahertz to terahertz) ultrashort input pulses in dielectric materials modeled by a linear Debye medium. We demonstrate computationally the emergence of Brillouin precursors in the material (water) and the fact that the peak of this transient is attenuated at a much slower rate than is the carrier frequency. In the 0.1 to 1 THz regime the carrier frequency does not propagate in our calculations. Only the precursors enter the material, and this is in line with experiments reported by Pleshko and Palocz. We also implement models that include nonlinearly forced Debye and nonlinear Debye polarization dynamics and demonstrate the importance of nonlinear effects, especially when the amplitude of the input signal is large. This is an important step in understanding high frequency pulse propagation, and it has potential applications in the assessment of safety standards and in extending current imaging capabilities in both civilian and military uses.

Book Propagation of Transients in Dispersive Dielectric Media

Download or read book Propagation of Transients in Dispersive Dielectric Media written by Man Duc Bui and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Propagation of transient electromagnetic fields in dispersive dielectric media is studied. The dielectric medium is assumed to be linear, isotropic, and homogeneous and is described by the Debye model. Incident fields are assumed to be TEM plane wave pulses. The dielectric can assume the form of infinite half space or infinite circular cylinder; either of which may be homogeneous or stratified. The electric fields induced in the dielectric are calculated from Time Domain Maxwell's equations using Finite Difference Time Domain method. The results of this investigation can be used for geophysical probing, subsurface communication and for investigating possible biological effects of pulsed electromagnetic fields.

Book Parameter Identification for Dispersive Dielectrics Using Pulsed Microwave Interrogating Signals and Acoustic Wave Induced Reflections in Two and Three Dimensions

Download or read book Parameter Identification for Dispersive Dielectrics Using Pulsed Microwave Interrogating Signals and Acoustic Wave Induced Reflections in Two and Three Dimensions written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report we consider an electromagnetic interrogation technique for identifying the dielectric parameters of a Debye medium in two and three dimensions. These parameters include the dielectric permittivity, the conductivity and the relaxation time of the Debye medium. In this technique a travelling acoustic pressure wave that is generated in the Debye medium is used as a virtual reflector for an interrogating microwave electromagnetic pulse that is generated in free space and impinges on a planar interface that separates air and the Debye medium. The reflections of the microwave pulse from the air-Debye interface and from the acoustic pressure wave are recorded at an antenna that is located in air. These reflections comprise the data that is used in an inverse problem to estimate the dielectric parameters of the Debye medium. We assume that the dielectric parameters of the Debye medium are locally pressure dependent. A model for acoustic pressure dependence of the material constitutive parameters in Maxwell's equations is presented. As a first approximation, we assume that the Debye dielectric parameters are affine functions of pressure. We present a time domain formulation that is solved using finite differences in time and in space using the finite difference time domain method (FDTD). Perfectly matched layer (PML) absorbing boundary conditions are used to absorb outgoing waves at the finite boundaries of the computational domain and prevent excessive spurious reflections from reentering the domain and contaminating the data that is collected at the antenna placed in air.
