Display techniques have attempted to allow comfortable readability and useful operating lifetimes under ambient illumination conditions from darkness to 10,000 foot-candles. This was accomplished by a simulator study of state-of-the-art EL displays, followed by design and construction of improved displays in keeping with legibility requirements. (Author).

Book excerpt: An electroluminescent display panel of the cross-grid-matrix-type was fabricated on a 10-3/4 x 10-3/4-inch glass substrate using improved vacuum deposition procedures and a high brightness manganese-doped ZnS phosphor. This panel contained 256 x 256 active elements within an area of approximately 7 x 7 inches. Linear resolution was 36 elements per inch with a cross-conductor width of 0.020 inch and a separation of 0.007 inch. The display panel was successfully used as a viewing screen for rear-projected images. The brightness-voltage relationship of the thin film phosphor was such that a cross-suppression ratio in excess of 10,000 to 1 was achieved with an excited element brightness of 100 ft-L. Performance measurements indicated that the optimum drive frequency was about 15 kHz. For pulsed operation, a burst frequency of 37.5 Hz, a carrier frequency of 15 kHz, and a duty cycle of 0.25 percent gave an average brightness of a few foot-Lamberts. Useful operating lifetime of several hundred hours under the above conditions was indicated by preliminary data. The variation in brightness uniformity over a group of cells near the center of the panel was less than 7 percent at an average brightness level of 16 ft-L.A brightness reduction of about 12 percent was observed at a single cell when the contacting configuration was varied on the stannic oxide electrode. Book excerpt: The purpose of this Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) was to develop a new-generation electroluminescent (EL) material for flat panel displays and related applications by using unique and complementary research capabilities at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and OSRAM Sylvania, Inc. The goal was to produce an EL material with a luminance 10 times greater than conventional EL phosphors. An EL material with this increased luminance would have immediate applications for flat panel display devices (e.g., backlighting for liquid-crystal diodes) and for EL lamp technology. OSRAM Sylvania proposed that increased EL phosphor luminance could be obtained by creating composite EL materials capable of alignment under an applied electric field and capable of concentrating the applied electric field. Oak Ridge National Laboratory used pulsed laser deposition as a method for making these composite EL materials. The materials were evaluated for electroluminescence at laboratory facilities at OSRAM Sylvania, Inc. Many composite structures were thus made and evaluated, and it was observed that a composite structure based on alternating layers of a ferroelectric and a phosphor yielded electroluminescence. An enabling step that was not initially proposed but was conceived during the cooperative effort was found to be crucial to the success of the composite structure. The CRADA period expired before we were able to make quantitative measurements of the luminance and efficiency of the composite EL material. Future cooperative work, outside the scope of the CRADA, will focus on making these measurements and will result in the production of a prototype composite EL device.

Based on present literature, the following conclusions are drawn. When compared to standard Arabics, segmented numerals are usually found to be less legible. However, of all the nonstandard numeral designs, segmented numerals are consistently superior. As the complexity of the observer's task increases, differences between the legibilities of segmented and standard numerals become insignificant. Therefore, no appreciable decrement in functional legibility is to be expected from segmented numerals in applied situations where tasks are typically complex. Practice effects, observers' motivation and stress, interaction of design types, number of segments and intersegmental distance are important variables to be considered. At present, little is known about how these variables influence legibility. Future research on legibility should be conducted under conditions which most nearly simulate the situation for which the proposed design is intended."--Abstract.
