Book Electrical Vertical Take Off and Landing Aircrafts in a Civilian Urban Environment Concepts Technology and Legislative Framework

Download or read book Electrical Vertical Take Off and Landing Aircrafts in a Civilian Urban Environment Concepts Technology and Legislative Framework written by Niklas Lohse and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-12-11 with total page 83 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2019 in the subject Engineering - Aerospace Technology, grade: 1,5, University of Applied Sciences Wildau, language: English, abstract: This Paper will introduce the most developed concept of vertical take off and landing (VTOL) aircrafts and assess them. It will also analyse the key technology challenges and the legislative situation. The world’s population is growing and people continue to move from rural to urban areas. This is accompanied by an increasing number of cars. As a result of this, traffic jams in densely populated areas and long commutes are becoming omnipresent. Extension possibilities for existing infrastructure, especially within urban areas, are very limited due to space. Consequently, innovative alternatives are required. Flying cars, also known as vertical take off and landing (VTOL) aircraft, still appear to be a future vision which seems to be far away. However, to date, more than 200 of such concepts around the world are being developed, some of which are even performing flight tests. The objective of this Master’s Thesis therefore is to evaluate if flying cars have a realistic potential to improve the overloaded ground infrastructure systems on a mid-term ten years basis. In order to answer the research question, a conceptual examination and subsequent classification of the existing concepts is conducted. Based on this a profound content analysis of the four most mature aircraft is carried out. As a result, three significant technical challenges emerge: batteries, noise pollution and the autonomous flying capability. By performing another content analysis on these obstacles, their respective relevance and impact following an upcoming vehicle certification is investigated. Furthermore, VTOL aircraft operations would require legislative amendments. Hence, the current legal situations and actual activities in those regions are studied, where the four companies with the most mature concepts are based. On that basis it can be concluded, that flying cars have a huge potential to relieve the overstressed infrastructure systems on the ground. Although more than ten years will be required to significantly improve this situation, the first flying cars will most likely be visible much sooner. Technical as well as legal challenges exist, but are not insurmountable and especially the latter are relatively well developed already to enable VTOL operations in an urban environment in the near future.

Book excerpt: The goal for this project is to conduct a conceptual design study of an unmanned vertical take-off and landing electric aircraft with maximum take-off mass of 25kg. The aircraft in question features the PICOMA (Pitch Control by Mass Actuation) patented concept, which is used to control the stability of the aircraft around its lateral axis by moving a mass along its longitudinal one. Previously, two separate design studies were performed on aircraft using the PICOMA concept and the gathered experience, where possible, is applied to this project. This report includes the creation of the needed CAD models, performance calculations for the vertical and horizontal flight phases, and the CFD analysis performed on the aerodynamic surfaces of the airplane. Furthermore, the used design methods are outlined in the report along with several identified design challenges, stemming from the unique control mechanism of the aircraft. Respectively, possible solutions to the design challenges are proposed and discussed throughout this report.*****The goal for this project is to conduct a conceptual design study of an unmanned vertical take-off and landing electric aircraft with maximum take-off mass of 25kg. Book Short Field Take Off and Landing Performance As an Enabling Technology for a Greener More Efficient Airspace System

Download or read book Short Field Take Off and Landing Performance As an Enabling Technology for a Greener More Efficient Airspace System written by Craig E. Hange and published by BiblioGov. This book was released on 2013-07 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Cruise Efficient Short Take-Off and Landing (CESTOL) aircraft and Civil Tiltrotor (CTR) are two examples of powered-lift aircraft concepts that are of interest to NASA. These concepts will be able to utilize the shorter unused or underutilized runways and corresponding airspace at the crowded hub airports and many unused airfields and airspace that currently exist in other expanding urban areas providing additional capacity to the airspace system and reductions in congestion and delays seen in the current system. By treating the use of CESTOL and CTR as critical components that supplement other green aircraft to be used in the overall airspace system, the efficiency and improvements gained by the entire system will offset the potential increased fuel usage and emissions that may be a result of providing short field capability to the powered-lift aircraft. My presentation will address how NASA and the aerospace industry may identify, analysis, and finally implement these powered-lift aircraft into the airspace system and improve the capacity and reduce delay, while obtaining an overall reduction in noise, fuel usage, and emissions.

This book was released on 2020-10-30 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft technology has developed beyond the traditional aviation industry and now influences the creation of new and novel transportation applications. Some experts even suggest on-demand eVTOL logistics capabilities could be harnessed by crisis response teams to c ombat a future pandemic. The lessons of the COVID-19 crisis highlighted the challenges of managing a global pandemic response due to the difference in regional and local resources, culture, and political systems. Although there may not be a uniform crisis management strategy that the world can agree on, next-generation vertical flight vehicles could be used to distribute limited medical equipment, supplies, and personnel to hot spots faster than conventional aircraft or ground vehicles. However, creating this capability is not easy. This SAE EDGE(TM) Research Report by Johnny Doo addresses the opportunities and challenges of establishing an eVTOL fleet, including deployment, supporting infrastructure, and fleet management.

Book Advances in Electric Propulsion

Download or read book Advances in Electric Propulsion written by Jean L Broge and published by SAE International. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aviation propulsion development continues to rely upon fossil fuels for the vast majority of commercial and military applications. Until these fuels are depleted or abandoned, burning them will continue to jeopardize air quality and provoke increased regulation. With those challenges in mind, research and development of more efficient and electric propulsion systems will expand. Fuel-cell technology is but one example that addresses such emission and resource challenges, and others, including negligible acoustic emissions and the potential to leverage current infrastructure models. For now, these technologies are consigned to smaller aircraft applications, but are expected to mature toward use in larger aircraft. Additionally, measures such as electric/conventional hybrid configurations will ultimately increase efficiencies and knowledge of electric systems while minimizing industrial costs. Requirements for greater flight time, stealth characteristics, and thrust-to-power ratios adds urgency to the development of efficient propulsion methods for applications such as UAVs, which looks to technologies such as asymmetrical capacitors to enhance electric propulsion efficiency. This book will take the reader through various technologies that will enable a more-electric aircraft future, as well as design methods and certification requirements of more-electric engines.
