Book Properties of Perovskites and Other Oxides

Download or read book Properties of Perovskites and Other Oxides written by K. Alex Mller and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book some 50 papers published by K A Müller as author or co-author over several decades, amplified by more recent work mainly by T W Kool with collaborators, are reproduced. The main subject is Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) applied to the study of perovskites and other oxides with related subjects. This wealth of papers is organized into eleven chapters, each with an introductory text written in the light of current understanding. The contributions of the first editor on structural phase transitions have been immense, and because K A Müller and J C Fayet have published a review paper on the subject, the latter is reproduced in chapter VII. Not related to EPR is a part of chapter VIII on the dipolar and quantum paraelectric behavior with dielectric studies. In chapter X two papers proving the existence of Fermi glasses are reproduced. The year 1986 bears some significance: early in this year the paper by Bednorz and Müller on the possible observation of superconductivity was published. This resulted in a substantial shift in the paradigm of condensed matter physics, to which the present first editor has contributed scientifically with others and which will be reviewed in a second volume.

Book Perovskite Oxide Thin Film Growth Characterization and Stability

Download or read book Perovskite Oxide Thin Film Growth Characterization and Stability written by Andrew Izumi and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies into a class of materials known as complex oxides have evoked a great deal of interest due to their unique magnetic, ferroelectric, and superconducting properties. In particular, materials with the ABO3 perovskite structure have highly tunable properties because of the high stability of the structure, which allows for large scale doping and strain. This also allows for a large selection of A and B cations and valences, which can further modify the material's electronic structure. Additionally, deposition of these materials as thin films and superlattices through techniques such as pulsed laser deposition (PLD) results in novel properties due to the reduced dimensionality of the material. The novel properties of perovskite oxide heterostructures can be traced to a several sources, including chemical intermixing, strain and defect formation, and electronic reconstruction. The correlations between microstructure and physical properties must be investigated by examining the physical and electronic structure of perovskites in order to understand this class of materials. Some perovskites can undergo phase changes due to temperature, electrical fields, and magnetic fields. In this work we investigated Nd0.5Sr0.5MnO3 (NSMO), which undergoes a first order magnetic and electronic transition at T=158K in bulk form. Above this temperature NSMO is a ferromagnetic metal, but transitions into an antiferromagnetic insulator as the temperature is decreased. This rapid transition has interesting potential in memory devices. However, when NSMO is deposited on (001)-oriented SrTiO3 (STO) or (001)-oriented (LaAlO3)0.3-(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7 (LSAT) substrates, this transition is lost. It has has been reported in the literature that depositing NSMO on (110)-oriented STO allows for the transition to reemerge due to the partial epitaxial growth, where the NSMO film is strained along the [001] surface axis and partially relaxed along the [11̄0] surface axis. This allows the NSMO film enough freedom of movement to undergo a shear strain along the [11̄0] axes, allowing the NSMO film to switch phases. It was found that the desired magnetic and electrical properties were closely tied to the structural properties, which were highly sensitive to the precise growth conditions. These perovskite oxides can be further geometrically constrained by patterning, resulting in additional novel magnetic and electrical properties. One such method of patterning involves implanting Ar into a film to locally destabilize the ordered perovskite structure, therefore suppress the magnetic and electrical properties. However, to fully integrate this technique into devices which require multi-planar processes, the ability for a patterned perovskite film to withstand high temperature anneals is crucial in creating more advanced structures. The stability of Ar-implanted La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 (LSMO) thin films was studied upon annealing at 400°C, 500°C, and 600°C. The LSMO retained its amorphous structure with little ferromagnetism after a 400°C anneal, but anneals at 500°C and 600°C resulted in partial recrystallization and a return of the ferromagnetic properties. This recrystallized film displayed semiconducting properties with a lower Curie temperature than the as deposited film. The deposition of an La0.7Sr0.3FeO3 (LSFO) film onto an Ar implanted LSMO film at 400°C caused the LSMO film to almost fully recrystallize, suggesting that the deposition process also recrystallizes the Ar-implanted film. In conclusion, two perovskites films were explored in this thesis. NSMO films proved to be very sensitive to growth conditions, and Ar-implanted LSMO films quickly recrystallized past 400°C or a subsequent film deposition. These studies provide useful information on the structural and electronic transformations these films go through during heat treatment and strain engineering.

Book Localized to Itinerant Electronic Transition in Perovskite Oxides

Download or read book Localized to Itinerant Electronic Transition in Perovskite Oxides written by John B. Goodenough and published by Springer. This book was released on 2003-09-04 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in the transition metal oxides with perovskite related structures goes back to the 1950s when the sodium tungsten bronzes NaxWO3 were shown to be metallic [1], the system Lal_xSr~MnO3 was found to contain a ferromagnetic conductive phase [2], and La0.sSr0.sCoO3 was reported to be a ferromagnetic metal, but with a peculiar magnetization of 1.5 #a/Co atom [3]. Stoichiometric oxide perovskites have the generic formula AMO3 in which the A site is at the center of a simple cubic array of M sites; the oxide ions form (180 ° 4)) M O M bridges to give an MO3 array of corner shared MO6/2 octahedra and the larger A cations have twelvefold oxygen coordination. Mismatch between the A O and M O equilibrium bond lengths introduces internal stresses. A compressive stress on the MO3 array is accommodated by a lowering of the M O M bond angle from 180 ° to (180 ° 4)); a tensile stress on the M O M bonds is accommodated by the formation of hexagonal polytypes [4].

Book Perovskite Oxide for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Download or read book Perovskite Oxide for Solid Oxide Fuel Cells written by Tatsumi Ishihara and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-06-12 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fuel cell technology is quite promising for conversion of chemical energy of hydrocarbon fuels into electricity without forming air pollutants. There are several types of fuel cells: polymer electrolyte fuel cell (PEFC), phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC), molten carbonate fuel cell (MCFC), solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC), and alkaline fuel cell (AFC). Among these, SOFCs are the most efficient and have various advantages such as flexibility in fuel, high reliability, simple balance of plant (BOP), and a long history. Therefore, SOFC technology is attracting much attention as a power plant and is now close to marketing as a combined heat and power generation system. From the beginning of SOFC development, many perovskite oxides have been used for SOFC components; for example, LaMnO -based oxide for the cathode and 3 LaCrO for the interconnect are the most well known materials for SOFCs. The 3 current SOFCs operate at temperatures higher than 1073 K. However, lowering the operating temperature of SOFCs is an important goal for further SOFC development. Reliability, durability, and stability of the SOFCs could be greatly improved by decreasing their operating temperature. In addition, a lower operating temperature is also beneficial for shortening the startup time and decreasing energy loss from heat radiation. For this purpose, faster oxide ion conductors are required to replace the conventional Y O -stabilized ZrO 2 3 2 electrolyte. A new class of electrolytes such as LaGaO is considered to be 3 highly useful for intermediate-temperature SOFCs.

Book Synthesis Sintering and Electronic Conductivity Studies of Medium and High entropy Perovskite Oxides

Download or read book Synthesis Sintering and Electronic Conductivity Studies of Medium and High entropy Perovskite Oxides written by Sai Ram Gajjala and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of the entropy concept to stabilize oxide systems opens the possibility of discovering new materials with unique structural and functional properties. High-entropy alloys and oxides, which are based on the entropy stabilization concept and composed of multi-principal elements, have the potential to tailor structural and functional properties to meet specific needs. The study of lanthanum-based perovskite materials that benefit from the entropy stabilization approach is a promising area of research. However, the inherent randomness of multi-principal elements presents new challenges, making it difficult to predict their behavior. To understand these difficulties, we have initiated a methodical investigation of La-based medium- and high-entropy perovskite oxides. This study focuses on the synthesis, characterization, sintering mechanism, and electrical conductivity properties of nine La1-xCax(A1/3, B1/3, C1/3)O3 medium-entropy perovskite oxide systems (A, B, and C = three combination of Cr or Co or Fe or Ni or Mn) and one La1-xCax(Cr0.2Co0.2Fe0.2Ni0.2Mn0.2)O3 high-entropy perovskite oxide system (for x = 0.1 to 0.3). This research aims to provide better understanding of: (1) synthesis process, (2) temperature of single-phase formation, (3) the impact of various combinations of multiple B-site transitional elements and Ca doping on crystal structure, and microstructure (4) sintering mechanism and (5) electrical conductivity properties.
