Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Welding and Welding Appliances Nevertheless it is quite true that the War gave such an impetus to the use of the newer method of welding as many years of endeavour during times of peace would have failed to impart to it. Moreover, the War greatly enlarged the sphere of its application, and was instrumental in bringing home to our manufacturers what a powerful agent was the electric current for the carrying out of certain types of work. As a consequence it has, nowadays, become the rule, rather than the exception, to find electric welding plants in our factories, and there appears to be every probability of such plants being even more extensively employed than they are at present. Furthermore, the War has undoubtedly had the effect of developing and improving the machines and appliances which both are and resistance welding call for. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Welding Resistance welding presents in its various branches some of the most interesting scientific and mechanical problems to be found anywhere. Spot-welding - butt-welding - line-welding all occupy a particular place in our manufacturing plants today, and new uses are being constantly found. In the gathering and arranging of the material used in this book, particular care has been taken to classify and place various subjects together as far as possible. This is not only convenient for reference purposes, but enables the reader to easily compare different makes and types of apparatus. In most cases, the name of the maker of each piece of apparatus is mentioned in the description in order to save the time of those seeking information. No time or pains have been spared in the endeavor to make this the most comprehensive book on electric welding equipment and practice, ever published. Every possible source of informa tion known to the long-experienced editor has been drawn upon and properly credited. It is hoped that this book will prove a permanent record of electric welding as it is today, and also be an inspiration and source of information for those engaged in practice, research or development. Excerpt: ...and Molor Company's Arc Welding Set. Another differentially wound generator, specially intended for electric are welding work, is made by the Lancashire Dynamo and Motor Company, Limited, of Trafford Park, Manchester. It is shown coupled direct on the same bed-plate to its motor in Fig. 38, while a diagram of the windings of the two machines is given in Fig. 39. As will be observed, the arrangement of the winding is different in several particulars from the windings of the machines which have been described above. There is a shunt winding A which is connected across the armature of the generator, and has a regulator in circuit with it, and a series winding which is in the arc welding circuit, and there is a third separately excited winding B which, however, is arranged in series with the field winding of the motor across the supply mains. In describing the arrangement the makers write as follows: "The arc may be struck across the armature of the generator without any resistance in circuit, and the plant is capable of running for short periods with the armature of the generator short circuited." The windings A and B tend to assist one another, while the winding C opposes both, and hence tends to lower the generator voltage. No series resistance is used in the welding circuit. At the moment of touching the work with the electrode there is a tendency for an excessive current to flow in the generator circuit. This current, of course, flows through the series winding, and is limited to the value which) will demagnetise the generator field by an amount sufficient to prevent any larger current from flowing. Similarly, when an arc is struck, the resistance of the circuit is increased, and the current tends to fall. This tendency is...

Book Electric Arc Welding Classic Reprint

Download or read book Electric Arc Welding Classic Reprint written by E. Wanamaker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Arc Welding The authors of this work have not attempted to cover the electric welding art in its broadest sense. The book is confined almost exclusively to autogenous electric arc welding. The phenomena of the welding arc, and the metallurgy of welding, are in such a state of development that the authors' in formation has been limited to the research which has come under their observation. Many phases of these subjects have been left, therefore, to specialists more adequately equipped both as to electric and metallurgical data as well as laboratory apparatus. The effort has been made to present information that is most in demand for practical purposes. The material is conveniently and logically arranged for ready reference. A large amount of practical information on many phases of the application of the art has. Been incorporated; for instance, descriptions of welding systems and their installation, phenomena of the metallic and carbon 'welding arc, training of operators, sequence of metal. Disposition for various types of joints and building up operations, electrode materials used, weld ability of various metals, weld composition, thermal disturbances of parts affected by the welding process, physical properties of completed welds, efficiency of welding equipments expressed in pounds of metal used or deposited per kilowatt hours, welding cost, etc. It is desired to lay particular stress on the fact that a very small percentage of the possibilities and advantages of arc weld ing, from an industrial standpoint, are being made use of at the present time, and if this work will result in a broader application of the art, as well as further and more extensive research, the authors will feel well repaid for their humble efforts. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Welding: A Comprehensive Treatise on the Practice of the Various Resistance and Arc Welding Processes, Covering Descriptions of the Machines and Apparatus Used and the Applications Both in Manufacturing and Repair Work Resistance Welding. In the resistance, incandescent or Thomson electric welding process, the metals to be welded are brought into intimate contact by being held closely together by metal clamps actuated by springs or levers, so as to permit a constant pressure on the parts to be welded, even after the metal at the welding surfaces becomes plastic. The parts to be welded form an electric circuit, and the resistance at the point of contact between the two surfaces to be welded pro duces a welding temperature in a very short time; the metal parts are then forced together and thus welded. A distinct feature of the resistance welding process is that the interior of the metal is raised to a welding temperature before the surface reaches that heat, so that, if the exterior surface is welded, it is certain that the interior is also properly welded, since it is at a somewhat higher heat. When work is heated for welding in a forge, the opposite conditions take place. A perfect weld may be indicated on the surface, but this weld may cover an imperfect joint inside. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Spot and Arc Welding Although electric welding has been used for many years for repair work, there exists to-day a hesitancy in applying it to new construction, especially to the joining of heavy steel parts. It is the purpose of this book to endeavor to dispel this apprehension. The data of tests made in the spot welding of heavy steel plates by the Emergency Fleet Corporation is furnished in full with the expectation that in making this information avail able to shipbuilders and others, they will be able to adopt this process to their own manufacturing advantage. In like manner the underlying question of arc-welding proc esses is fully discussed with the intent of reassuring any one who may doubt the ability of these methods to supersede the rivet. The author wishes to acknowledge the courtesies ex tended to him both by those who have contributed to the text and those who have permitted the reprinting of valuable published material. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Welding: A Comprehensive Treatise on the Practice of the Various Resistance and Arc Welding Processes, Covering Descriptions of the Machines and Apparatus Used and the Applications Both in Manufacturing and Repair Work Electric welding has become so important an art in the mechanical industries that a comprehensive treatise on this subject covering both the resistance and the arc welding processes is needed in the trade. A special study of the subject has, therefore, been made by the authors of this work, who have been assisted in their work by the experts in resistance and arc welding of some of the most prominent concerns in the United States engaged in this line of work. Credit is especially due the C. & C. Electric & Mfg. Co., the General Electric Co., the Lincoln Electric Co., the Thomson Electric Welding Co., the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Co., and the Wilson Welder & Metals Co. for the cooperation and assistance which they have rendered in supplying information in connection with this undertaking. Consultations with the experts of these companies have made it possible to obtain thoroughly up-to-date information embodying the latest developments and discoveries in the art, and it is believed that, for this reason, the book will prove especially useful to those who are already employing electric welding equipment or who are contemplating its use, as well as to the students of the subject who desire to obtain authoritative information on the electric welding processes. Credit is also due Mr. Alan M. Bennett, whose treatise on Arc Welding, written for Machinery, has been freely consulted and employed in the writing of the chapter on Arc Welding. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric-Arc Welding of Steel: I. Properties of the Arc-Fused Metal The application of arc welding In the Shipbuilding industry is one of the most important and extensive applications which has as yet been proposed for this method. During the year 1918, at the request of and with the cooperation of the Welding Research Subcommittee of the Emergency Fleet Corporation, an extensive program was outlined by the Bureau of Standards for the study of this type of Welding. The principal object of the research was to determine inan empirical way by actual welding tests carried out by Skilled operators the relative values and merits of the different types of electrodes or welding pencils which are available commercially Due to changed conditions, however, at the close of the year 1918 the original program was modified and Shortened very considerably. The results of the investigation here given. Relate principally to the nature and characteristic properties of the weld, and in particular those of the 'fused - ln metal. In drawing upgthe modified program it was decided to make the study of the characteristic properties of the fused in metal the primary object of the investigation, the study of the merits of the different types of electrodes being a secondary one. Since the metal of any weld produced by the electric arc fusion method is essentially a casting because there is no refinement possible as in some of the other methods, it is apparent that the efficiency of the weld is dependent upon the properties of this arc-fused metal. Hence a knowledge of its properties is of fundamental importance in the study of electric-arc welds. Though the results obtained throughout the entire series of examinations are not so conclusive as might be desired, it is believed that they contribute very materially to our knowledge of the properties of the fused-in metal, which conditions the serviceability of the electric-arc weld.
