This book was released on 2018-03-03 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Power Stations The production, transmission and distribution of electrical energy on a large scale in an adequate and economical manner is an engineering task of the first magnitude. Each system has its specific details and problems the solutions of which depend largely upon local conditions, but there are certain fundamental engineering and economic principles that apply to all systems. Different men may have charge of the several activities of a power organization, depending upon the size of the system, but the executive head of the utility must be a man with funda mental knowledge of all the engineering and economic aspects of the operations in order that he may make decisions intelligently.' In the power plant, engineers must deal with problems of design and construction of buildings, the installation and opera tion of machines and equipment, the records of operation and the internal organization and Operation of the plant for efficiently utilizing every dollar invested. The transmission of the energy involves a whole mass of engineering work in construction, Operation and organization. And in the distribution and sale of the energy a still more com plex engineering and economic problem is encountered. Beyond all these elements lies the realm of human relationships and the obligations inherent in public utility operations. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Railway Power StationsOn top of shell near the front end is riveted a steam nozzle or saddle, to which is bolted a tee. This tee car ries the steam valve on its branch, which is made to look either to front, rear, right or left; on its top the safety valve is placed. The saddle has an area equal to that of stop valve and safety valve combined. The rear head carries a blow-off flange of about same Size as the feed flange, and a manhead curved to fit the head, the man hole supported by a strengthening ring outside. On each side of the shell a square bar, the tile-bar, rests loosely in flat hooks riveted to the shell. This bar supports the side tiles whose other ends rest on the side walls, thus closing in the furnace or flue on top. The tsp of the tile bar is two inches below low water line. The bars rise from front to rear at the rate of one inch in twelve. When the boiler is set, they must be exactly level, the whole boiler being then on an incline, i. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Large Electric Power Stations Their Design and Construction: With Examples of Existing Stations IN recent years the installation and extension of power stations for the supply of electrical energy has progressed very rapidly, and has left little time to those engaged in this class of work to study in detail problems presented by questions of economy in capital outlay and production. It has, on the other hand, become more and more essential to scrutinise very closely the process of transformation of energy from coal to electricity, with the object of reducing fuel consumption and lowering the price at which the electrical energy can be supplied to'consumers. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Central Electric Light and Power Stations, 1902 States, do some actual business in the way of selling current and giving general service, but no canvass was made to elicit the details; and, moreover, the figures for this part of the industry would be insignificant in comparison with the totals. During the year 1902, there were 253 electric railway companies that reported ih come received from the sale of current for light and power, and the companies selling current for such pur poses are increasing in number. Of the 253 companies, 118 reported the number of lamps in use and the amount of income from the sale of current. The statistics for these companies are shown in Tables 97 and 98. If the statistics from this group be added to those already cited in Table 1, the number of stations would be in creased to the total income from the sale of cur rent to the number of arc lamps to and the number of incandescent lamps to For detailed statistics of the power and generating equipment of these plants, reference should be made to the Report on Street and Electric Railways. The sub ject will, however, be taken up incidentally under vari ous headings in the present report. Comparison of tire statistics of private and municipal stations. - According to Table 1, private stations form by far the largest portion of the industry, constituting per cent of the total number of stations in opera tion during 1902. Their income from sale of current formed per cent of gross income, the expenses of operation per cent of the total, while they gave em ployment to per cent of the total number of wage earners engaged in the industry and paid per cent of the total amount of annual wages. The primary power plant equipment of these stations formed per cent of the total horsepower of all stations, while their gen crating equipment formed per cent of the total horsepower of all dynamos. The kilowatt hour output of private stations formed per cent of the total, and the arc lamps in such stations formed per cent of the total number wired for operation. Book Special Reports

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Special Reports: Central Electric Light and Power Stations; 1907 Table 2 shows that while the number of stations which were unable to make separate reports is grow ing, there is still greater increase in their impor tance. The 1ncrease in the 1ncome for electric service, does not fully represent this feature of the electric service, since, as shown in the report on street railways, 330 companies reported the sale of electric current during 1907, and the income from this source amounted to Some of the current was sold to other electric railways, but a large portion was used for light and power in enter prises not connected with the railways. However, statistics of income and equipment can be shown separately for only 17 7 companies. The increases in number of lamps, number and horsepower of station ary motors, and number of meters on consumption circuits, not' only show the rapid growth of central station work in connection with the operation of street railways, but demonstrate the wonderful facility with which electrical energy may be utilized wherever there is a demand for light or power. Ownership of central electric stations - Table 3 shows the number of commercial central stations conducted under the different forms of ownership.
