It is not generally known, however, that there is a large number of solid conductors 2 of elec tricity, metallic and nonmetallic, in which, when brought together so as to form a contact of not too low resistance, electricity appears to pass more easily in one di rection than in the other. Most cases of this kind are too uncertain and capricious in their action to allow definite study. But silicon in contact with almost any of the ordinary metals, carbon-steel, and tellu rium - aluminum all show a well marked and fairly regular uni lateral conductivity.
