Through a review of and a country wise comparison of campaign finance laws in selected jurisdictions, namely, the US, UK, Canada, France, Russia and Turkey, it brings out the most common forms of regulation, loopholes and sanctions under election finance laws. It then goes on to survey the law in India, namely the Representation of People's Act, 1951, the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961, the Foreign Contributions Regulation Act etc. and describes the regulation pertaining to contributions to candidates and political parties, disclosure requirements and ceilings on campaign expenditure under these laws. The paper concludes with some suggestions for reform of the laws.
