Book Elastic Stability of Shells of Revolution by the Variational Approach Using Discrete Elements

Download or read book Elastic Stability of Shells of Revolution by the Variational Approach Using Discrete Elements written by Dhirendra Ramachandra Navaratna and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A systematic procedure for obtaining the bifurcation-buckling point for shells of revolution under static axisymmetric loading by the variational approach using discrete elements is presented. Basic formulations are carried out for three different shell theories and the buckling loads obtained from these are compared. The formulations are illustrated and evaluated by comparisons with known solutions for a number of examples such as cylinders with uniform thickness under axial compression, a truncated hemispherical shell under axial tension, and torsional buckling of a truncated conical shell. New problems, such as an axially-compressed cylinder with wall thickness varying alongs its length, and the torsional buckling of shallow and deep logarithmic shells have been solved to illustrate the versatility of this method. Buckling of the cylindrical shell under end compressive load is investigated for the influence of prebuckling deformation, edge conditions, radius-to-thickness ratio, and length-to-radius ratio. The convergence of the buckling load for the discrete system is established by using an increasing number if discrete elements. Finally, an approximate, but reasonably accurate discrete-element model called the constant-strain model is presented, which predicts a critical buckling load close to that obtained by using a more rigorous model (variable strain model). Book Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations in Engineering by W F Ames

Download or read book Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations in Engineering by W F Ames written by W. F. Ames and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1972-07-21 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, we study theoretical and practical aspects of computing methods for mathematical modelling of nonlinear systems. A number of computing techniques are considered, such as methods of operator approximation with any given accuracy; operator interpolation techniques including a non-Lagrange interpolation; methods of system representation subject to constraints associated with concepts of causality, memory and stationarity; methods of system representation with an accuracy that is the best within a given class of models; methods of covariance matrix estimation;methods for low-rank matrix approximations; hybrid methods based on a combination of iterative procedures and best operator approximation; andmethods for information compression and filtering under condition that a filter model should satisfy restrictions associated with causality and different types of memory. As a result, the book represents a blend of new methods in general computational analysis, and specific, but also generic, techniques for study of systems theory ant its particularbranches, such as optimal filtering and information compression.- Best operator approximation,- Non-Lagrange interpolation,- Generic Karhunen-Loeve transform- Generalised low-rank matrix approximation- Optimal data compression- Optimal nonlinear filtering

Book Finite Element Analysis of Hyperbolic Cooling Towers

Download or read book Finite Element Analysis of Hyperbolic Cooling Towers written by Seyyed Mohammed Niku and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The analysis of thin shells of revolution in general has always occupied an important place in the theory of structures, and recently the problem of hyperbolic cooling towers has attracted many investigators due to the wide use of such shells in industry. Until the early 1960's these towers were of moderate size, probably not exceeding 76m (250ft) height. In this range, the structural safety and stability were not of primary concern because, the minimum wall thickness and reinforcement were sufficient to provide the required safety. It was not necessary to use very rigorous methods to analyse the problem. The analysis involved the following assumptions, i) flexural stresses were ignored (membrane tneory), ii) The geometry of the shell was assumed to be perfect and to be idealised as a set of straight sided conical frusta, and iii) The boundary conditions at the base were taken to be fixed or continuously hinged with full tangential restraint.

Book Theory of Elastic Stability

Download or read book Theory of Elastic Stability written by Luis A. Godoy and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1999-11-01 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a unified presentation of the field of stability. Buckling and post-buckling states are studied on the basis of total potential energy of structural systems. Emphasis is placed throughout the text on post-buckling analysis and behaviour. The sensitivity of buckling and post-buckling states to changes in design parameters is also discussed as well as changes due to imperfections and damage.

Book Finite Element Bibliography

Download or read book Finite Element Bibliography written by Gerard De Vries and published by Springer. This book was released on 1976-12 with total page 706 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thjs bibliography had its inception in 1967, when the compilers first attempted a comprehensive cov erage of the finite element literature using both manual and computer-based retrieval. Initially, the data base was stored on a card index, but this was subsequently transferred to punched cards and magnetic tape. Computer processing was adopted at an early stage to derive the three index formats from the data base. Over the subsequent years, several versions of the bibliography were produced, with two of these being made available in a report form to other researchers. From the widespread interest in these documents, it became evident that there was a need for a commercially-available comprehensive bibliography in this area. A major effort was undertaken to revise, update, and extend the data base, resulting in this present volume. The bibliography covers the period 1956-1975 primarily, although some earlier publications of histori cal interest are included. The citations are not restricted to the English language and documents are listed in many languages and from diverse places of origin. All publication formats were accepted, so that references will be found to books, monographs, journal papers and articles, theses, dissertations, reports, surveys, and the like.
