Book Elastic Plastic JIc Fracture Toughness Values

Download or read book Elastic Plastic JIc Fracture Toughness Values written by WA. Logsdon and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good agreement was found between elastic plastic (JIc) and previously developed conventional linear elastic (KIc) critical fracture toughness values for five materials. The materials investigated included four rotor forging steels (ASTM A471 Ni-Cr-Mo-V, ASTM A469 Ni-Mo-V, ASTM A470 Cr-Mo-V, and AISI 403 modified 12Cr) plus an ASTM A217 21/4Cr-1Mo cast steel. A resistance curve test technique recently developed by Landes and Begley was employed to obtain the JIc fracture toughness values. Elastic plastic fracture toughness tests were performed with 1-in.-thick compact tension specimens at a minimum of three temperatures per material, the highest temperature being that where upper shelf fracture toughness behavior was first expected. The fine agreement between the elastic plastic and linear elastic critical fracture toughness values for this class of steels further supports the realization that the elastic plastic JIc fracture criterion, based largely on the path independent J-integral proposed by Rice, extends the concepts of linear elastic fracture mechanics into the elastic plastic fracture regime. Thus, it is now possible to obtain critical fracture toughness values with small specimens over a wide range of temperatures for tough materials.

Book An Analysis of Elastic Plastic Fracture Toughness Behavior for JIc Measurement in the Transition Region

Download or read book An Analysis of Elastic Plastic Fracture Toughness Behavior for JIc Measurement in the Transition Region written by T. Iwadate and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture toughness tests were performed in the transition region for ASTM A508 Class 3 and A470 nickel-chromium-molybdenum-vanadium steels using about 300 specimens of 0.5T, 1T, 2T, and 4T compact tension (CT) specimens. The KJ-values which are converted from Jc of the smaller specimens indicated a wide scatter ranging from below the KIc-value to much higher toughness. The fracture behavior was investigated with a scanning electron microscope in detail and the sources of scatter of the toughness in small specimens were studied. The fast brittle fracture behavior in the transition regime can be divided into two regions: (1) the region where fracture occurs on a blunting line (Region I) and (2) the region where fracture occurs on an R-curve (Region II). The scatter of the KJ-values in each region is caused by the amount of crack extension contained in the specimens.

Book Effect of Size on Elastic Plastic Fracture Toughness Parameters

Download or read book Effect of Size on Elastic Plastic Fracture Toughness Parameters written by SK. Putatunda and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation has been carried out to determine the influence of thickness and width on the elastic-plastic fracture toughness parameters: J value obtained from area under load/displacement curve JR, tearing modulus, and stress intensity factor corrected for plasticity KR. Compact tension specimens prepared from aircraft quality American Iran and Steel Institute (AISI) 4340 (Unified Numbering System [UNS] G43400) steel heat treated to a yield strength of 1000 MPa were used. All specimens satisfied the ASTM Test for JIc, a measure of Fracture Toughness (E 813) standard size requirements.

Book Characterization and Failure Analysis of Plastics

Download or read book Characterization and Failure Analysis of Plastics written by ASM International and published by ASM International. This book was released on 2003-01-01 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The selection and application of engineered materials is an integrated process that requires an understanding of the interaction between materials properties, manufacturing characteristics, design considerations, and the total life cycle of the product. This reference book on engineering plastics provides practical and comprehensive coverage on how the performance of plastics is characterized during design, property testing, and failure analysis. The fundamental structure and properties of plastics are reviewed for general reference, and detailed articles describe the important design factors, properties, and failure mechanisms of plastics. The effects of composition, processing, and structure are detailed in articles on the physical, chemical, thermal, and mechanical properties. Other articles cover failure mechanisms such as: crazing and fracture; impact loading; fatigue failure; wear failures, moisture related failure; organic chemical related failure; photolytic degradation; and microbial degradation. Characterization of plastics in failure analysis is described with additional articles on analysis of structure, surface analysis, and fractography.

Book Fracture and Fatigue

Download or read book Fracture and Fatigue written by J. C. Radon and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 499 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fracture and Fatigue: Elasto-Plasticity, Thin Sheet and Micromechanisms Problems covers the proceedings of the Third Colloquium on Fracture. The book discusses the development and applications of fracture mechanics. The contents of the text are organized according to the areas of concerns. The first part deals with elasto-plastic fracture mechanics, which includes topics such as fracture mechanics in the elastic-plastic regime and sizing of the geometry dependence and significance of maximum load toughness values. Part II covers the micromechanisms of fracture, which includes the aspects of crack growth under monotonic loading and the effect of secondary hardening on the fracture toughness of a bainitic microstructure. Part III concerns itself with thin sheet fracture mechanics, which includes R-curves evaluation for center-cracked panels and use of the R-curve for design with contained yield. The book will be of great interest to researchers and professionals whose work involves fracture mechanics.

Book A Procedure for the Determination of Ductile Fracture Toughness Values Using J Integral Techniques

Download or read book A Procedure for the Determination of Ductile Fracture Toughness Values Using J Integral Techniques written by GA. Clarke and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A procedure to determine the ductile fracture toughness value JIc, the value of the J integral at incipient crack growth, is described. The procedure was developed by the working committee of ASTM Task Group E24.01.09 on Elastic-Plastic Fracture under Committee E-24 on Fracture Testing. The principal goal of this report is to present a procedure for JIc determination that may be used as a basis for an ASTM standard on elastic-plastic testing. Although this procedure is described in terms of the multiple-specimen technique, any single-specimen method can be used as long as a good correspondence exists between the crack extension as measured by the heat tinting technique and that measured by single-specimen methods.
