Book The World in a Selfie

Download or read book The World in a Selfie written by Marco D'Eramo and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2021-03-30 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A spirited critique of the cultural politics of the tourist age. Or, why we are all tourists who hate tourists We've all been tourists at some point in our lives. How is it we look so condescendingly at people taking selfies in front of the Tower of Pisa? Is there really much to distinguish the package holiday from hipster city-breaks to Berlin or Brooklyn? Why do we engage our free time in an activity we profess to despise? The World in a Selfie dissects a global cultural phenomenon. For Marco D'Eramo, tourism is not just the most important industry of the century, generating huge waves of people and capital, calling forth a dedicated infrastructure, and upsetting and repurposing the architecture and topography of our cities. It also encapsulates the problem of modernity: the search for authenticity in a world of ersatz pleasures. D'Eramo retraces the grand tours of the first globetrotters - from Francis Bacon and Samuel Johnson to Arthur de Gobineau and Mark Twain - before assessing the cultural meaning of the beach holiday and the 'UNESCO-cide' of major heritage sites. The tourist selfie will never look the same again.

Book Sexual Diversity in Young Cuban Cinema

Download or read book Sexual Diversity in Young Cuban Cinema written by Margaret G. Frohlich and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-02-10 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how young Cuban filmmakers have expanded the range of sexual subjectivities on screen. It analyzes cine joven (films made by young directors) from the late 1980s to the early 2020s, film reviews, articles, and materials from the Cinematheque of Cuba's archive to illustrate the confluence of sexuality, cinema, and discourses of youth. While sexual and cinematic cultures have their own unique relation to the public sphere, state institutions, and transnational flows, this book explores tensions, debates, and expressions that unite them. In an investigation of how young filmmakers employ queer strategies of self-making to bring sexual diversity to the screen, Margaret G. Frohlich shows us how cine joven takes part in the socialization of power in Cuba.

Book A Changing World

Download or read book A Changing World written by Cesar Vidal and published by Whitaker House. This book was released on 2020-08-15 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is democracy done? Historian Dr. Cesar Vidal explores the expressions and failures of democracy throughout history, and the current threats to its existence around the globe in A Changing World. Vidal, author of over 180 books and possessing Ph.Ds. in history, philosophy, law, and theology, connects the dots between the collapse of national sovereignty and global warming, illegal immigration, gender ideology, national debt, and a globalist agenda. A Changing World details in five parts— a history of democracy, its threats, and options for the future, explaining the following: The foundations of modern democracy and the preponderant role of the Reformation in vital notions such as the supremacy of the law, limited power, and the separation of powers. Similarly, the author explores how these concepts took root in America and gave rise to the emergence of the United States, distinguishing this nation from European countries. The risks facing democracy and how these dangers arose. Starting from an analysis of contemporary philosophical ideologies, he moves on to the emergence of interventionist States, from the origin of Marxism, the imposition and fall of communism, and the rise of fascism in Europe. The threat of the globalist agenda, its main promoters—from Soros to Pope Francis—as well as the dogmas that compose it: global warming, gender ideology, population reduction, and the defense of illegal immigration, all issues that severely affect contemporary society. The evolution of Europe and the emergence of the European Union as the end of independent nations. He then addresses the case of Latin America and the roots of its constant economic and governmental crises. He analyzes the current situations of Venezuela, Chile, and Colombia and why they matter. The final part deals with the emerging resistance to the globalist agenda, manifested in the patriotic and democratic movements in the European Union, South America, and particularly in the United States with the rise of Donald Trump to power. Vidal uses a chapter to focus on Russian history, from tsarism to Putin, and then looks at China and its resurgence, with an appendix on the Middle East. “Far from democracy and freedom being almost naturally imposed realities, both are more threatened than ever. This threat is not only external but also, to a large extent, internal. A Changing World is an attempt to explain what democracy is and its fragility as well as what the globalist agenda is—a colossal threat to the continuity of democracy itself,” says the author about his new book.

Book How the World Changed Social Media

Download or read book How the World Changed Social Media written by Daniel Miller and published by UCL Press. This book was released on 2016-02-29 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the World Changed Social Media is the first book in Why We Post, a book series that investigates the findings of anthropologists who each spent 15 months living in communities across the world. This book offers a comparative analysis summarising the results of the research and explores the impact of social media on politics and gender, education and commerce. What is the result of the increased emphasis on visual communication? Are we becoming more individual or more social? Why is public social media so conservative? Why does equality online fail to shift inequality offline? How did memes become the moral police of the internet? Supported by an introduction to the project’s academic framework and theoretical terms that help to account for the findings, the book argues that the only way to appreciate and understand something as intimate and ubiquitous as social media is to be immersed in the lives of the people who post. Only then can we discover how people all around the world have already transformed social media in such unexpected ways and assess the consequences

Book The Society of the Selfie

Download or read book The Society of the Selfie written by Jeremiah Morelock and published by University of Westminster Press. This book was released on 2021-12-14 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the Internet is connected to the global crisis of liberal democracy. Today, self-promotion is at the heart of many human relationships. The selfie is not just a social media gesture people love to hate. It is also a symbol of social reality in the age of the Internet. Through social media people have new ways of rating and judging themselves and one another, via metrics such as likes, shares, followers and friends. There are new thirsts for authenticity, outlets for verbal aggression, and social problems. Social media culture and neoliberalism dovetail and amplify one another, feeding social estrangement. With neoliberalism, psychosocial wounds are agitated and authoritarianism is provoked. Yet this new sociality also inspires resistance and political mobilisation. Illustrating ideas and trends with examples from news and popular culture, the book outlines and applies theories from Debord, Foucault, Fromm, Goffman, and Giddens, among others. Topics covered include the global history of communication technologies, personal branding, echo chamber effects, alienation and fear of abnormality. Information technologies provide channels for public engagement where extreme ideas reach farther and faster than ever before, and political differences are widened and inflamed. They also provide new opportunities for protest and resistance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: María Sánchez is obsessed with what she cannot see. As a field veterinarian following in the footsteps of generations before her, she travels the countryside of Spain bearing witness to a life eroding before her eyes—words, practices, and people slipping away because of depopulation, exploitation of natural resources, inadequate environmental policies, and development encroaching on farmland and villages. Sánchez, the first woman in her family to dedicate herself to what has traditionally been a male-dominated profession, rebuffs the bucolic narrative of rural life often written by—and for consumption by—people in cities, describing the multilayered social complexity of people who are proud, resilient, and often misunderstood. Sánchez interweaves family stories of three generations with reflections on science and literature. She focuses especially on the often dismissed and undervalued generations of women who have forgone education and independence to work the land and tend to family. In doing so, she asks difficult questions about gender equity and labor. Part memoir and part rural feminist manifesto, Land of Women acknowledges the sacrifices of Sánchez’s female ancestors who enabled her to become the woman she is. A bestseller in Spain, Land of Women promises to ignite conversations about the treatment and perception of rural communities everywhere.

Book Give Your Speech Change the World

Download or read book Give Your Speech Change the World written by Nick Morgan and published by Harvard Business Review Press. This book was released on 2005-02-23 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Do you remember the topic of the last speech you heard? If not, you're not alone. In fact, studies show that audiences remember only 10% to 30% of speech or presentation content. Given those bleak statistics, why do we give speeches at all? We give them, says communications expert Nick Morgan, because they remain the most powerful way of connecting with audiences since ancient Greek times. But as we've evolved to a more conversational mode of public speaking, thanks to television, we have forgotten much of what the Greeks taught us about the nonverbal aspects of speech-giving: the physical connection with audiences that can create an almost palpable emotional bond. Morgan says this "kinesthetic connection" comes from truly listening to your audience—not just with your brain but with your body. In this book, he draws from more than 20 years as a speech coach and consultant, combining the best of ancient Greek oratory with modern communications research to offer a new, audience-centered approach to public speaking. Through entertaining and insightful examples, Morgan illustrates a 3 part process—focusing on content development, rehearsal, and delivery—that will enable readers of all experience levels to give more effective, passion-filled speeches that move audiences to action.
