It is not as useful as Logic, for it does not prove anything, and it is always telling one of things that are not going to happen, and making one believe things that are not true." A young man is in love with a girl who promises to dance with him at a ball if he brings her a red rose. The boy is at a loss because he does not know where to find a red rose. A nightingale overhears and decides to help. But is their love even worth the sacrifice of the nightingale? 'The Nightingale and the Rose' is a heart-breaking fable by Oscar Wilde about the nature of love and sacrifice, and is so very captivating and emotional for such a short story. Fans of 'Aesop's Fables' will love discovering the moral of this story. Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) was an Irish playwright, novelist, essayist and poet famous for ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’ and ‘The Importance of Being Earnest’. He died in Paris at the age of 46. 'The Importance of Being Earnest' is Oscar Wilde’s most popular and enduring play. Poking fun at the ridiculousness of human nature, especially that of the Victorian elite, it is both incredibly clever and undeniably silly. It has been performed and made into films and for television many times, most recently in the 2002 film starring Colin Firth, Reese Witherspoon and Judi Dench.

Book excerpt: A nightingale overhears a student complaining that his professor's daughter will not dance with him, as he is unable to give her a red rose. The nightingale visits all the rose-trees in the garden, and one of the white roses tell her that there's a way to produce a red rose, but only if the nightingale is prepared to sing the sweetest song for the rose all night, and sacrifice her life to do so. Seeing the student in tears, the nightingale carries out the ritual, and impales herself on the rose-tree's thorn so that her heart's blood can stain the rose. The student takes the rose to the professor's daughter, but she again rejects him because another man has sent her some real jewels, and "everybody knows that jewels cost far more than flowers." The student angrily throws the rose into the gutter, returns to his study of metaphysics, and decides not to believe in true love anymore.

Book The Nightingale and the Rose

Download or read book The Nightingale and the Rose written by Zoia Sproesser and published by Createspace Independent Pub. This book was released on 2012-12-18 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRILINGUAL ENGLISH-SPANISH-RUSSIAN book "The Nightingale and the Rose /EL RUISENOR Y LA ROSA/Solovey i Roza" is the second author's trilingual book (the first is "The Lady with the Dog" based on A. P. Chekhov's famous story). This book is based on a beautiful tale by Oscar Wilde, first published in May 1888. Oscar Wilde is a brilliant playwright of Irish origin who became most popular in the early 1890s in Victorian London for his "biting wit, flamboyant dress, and glittering conversation". The book is a wonderful entertaining and learning tool, for adults and children, where the reader will find an emotional tale about good and bad in human nature, sacrifice, love and death, simultaneously comparing three languages. The book has notes on grammar and vocabulary, some grammar tables and fun tri-lingual exercises, as well as links to author's trilingual UTube channel "zoiacalifornia". Russian, English, and Spanish are three of the six official languages of the United Nations. The trilingual text is conveniently formatted: each page has one paragraph of the text in the three languages. This formatting should present itself nicely in the electronic version too, since it will run on a Kindle (or other e-screen) page after page. Whatever is your occupation - a student, a business person, a home-staying parent, or a teacher of languages - you will benefit from this original cross-cultural trilingual presentation of an outstanding literary masterpiece. Zoia Sproesser has a Master's Degree in Education. She has lived in the USA for 17 years. She has devoted to Spanish nine years of studies, continuing mastering the beautiful language of Cervantes. She teaches English, Russian, and volunteers Beginning Spanish. Zoia has been in writing and publishing for 17 years.
