Download or read book El nacimiento de la banca en Am rica Latina written by Carlos Marichal and published by El Colegio de Mexico AC. This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Historia bancaria y monetaria de Am rica Latina siglos XIX y XX written by Carlos Marichal and published by Ed. Universidad de Cantabria. This book was released on 2017-12-28 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book A Century of Banking Consolidation in Europe

Download or read book A Century of Banking Consolidation in Europe written by Manfred Pohl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-02 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the late nineteenth century to the late twentieth century the European banking sector experienced countless mergers and acquisitions. The outcome of this century of consolidation is strikingly similar across the continent, with the banking sector of each country now dominated by a handful of giant banking corporations. Consolidation and concentration trends in banking was the theme of the Academic Archive Colloquium of the European Association for Banking History held in Madrid in June 1997. This volume is comprised of the 18 papers and responses presented at the Colloquium by a truly international group of delegates. Some of the themes explored in the book include: the significance of mergers for bank archives; the regulation of mergers and their impact on banking legislation; reactions to consolidation from within and without the banking industry; case studies of particular mergers and their impact on the wider banking community. Youssef Cassis's introductory chapter provides a general survey of trends in the consolidation process and suggests that the advent of the Euro may herald a new era in the history of European banking consolidation.

Book The Politics of Property Rights

Download or read book The Politics of Property Rights written by Stephen Haber and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-05-26 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a puzzle in political economy: why is it that political instability does not necessarily translate into economic stagnation or collapse? In order to address this puzzle, it advances a theory about property rights systems in many less developed countries. In this theory, governments do not have to enforce property rights as a public good. Instead, they may enforce property rights selectively (as a private good), and share the resulting rents with the group of asset holders who are integrated into the government. Focusing on Mexico, this book explains how the property rights system was constructed during the Porfirio Díaz dictatorship (1876-1911) and then explores how this property rights system either survived, or was reconstructed. The result is an analytic economic history of Mexico under both stability and instability, and a generalizable framework about the interaction of political and economic institutions.

Book A Century of Debt Crises in Latin America

Download or read book A Century of Debt Crises in Latin America written by Carlos Marichal and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carlos Marichal contends that the boom-and-bust cycles of Latin American foreign loans result mainly from the fluctuations of the world economy, rather than from errors made in Latin America itself. Marichal shows that the present debt crisis is only a part of an overall pattern in Latin American history--cycles of loan boom and subsequent debt crisis that are heavily influenced by fluctuations of international trade and capital flows. He also reveals the significant role played by those who implement debt policies. Examining the strategies of both lenders and borrowers, he makes it clear that foreign loan negotiations are not only financial tools but also political instruments with broad economic and social consequences. The book analyzes in detail the four major debt crises that took place in Latin America during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Marichal's focus is comparative, since the contracting of foreign loans and their repayment were problems common to virtually all nations of the region. He devotes special attention to explaining the links of these debt crises to the international financial panics of 1825, 1873, 1890, and 1929. The epilogue compares the debt crises of the past with the contemporary Latin American debt crisis.

Download or read book Bankruptcy of Empire written by Carlos Marichal and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book emphasizes that the Spanish empire remained the third most important European state in terms of fiscal income and naval power, and first in size of territorial empire, particularly because of its colonies in Spanish America. The Spanish crown was involved in four wars with Great Britain and two wars with France during the decades 1760-1810. Colonial Mexico financed most of these wars by remitting silver in the form of taxes and loans. The expenditures of the imperial wars were so great that they eventually caused the bankruptcy of both the Spanish American colonies and of the monarchy itself.
