Cette évolution a amené les états à envisager la protection de tout ce qui vit sur terre, c'est-à-dire de la diversité biologique. La prise en compte de cet environnement global bouleverse donc les rapports entre l'homme et la nature et la vision que l'homme en a car l'être humain est de plus en plus directement affecté par les problèmes environnementaux. La prévention semble alors devenir la seule attitude à même d'éviter que la situation ne se dégrade davantage. Les états cessent d'être uniquement des entités souveraines sur leurs ressources mais ils se retrouvent gestionnaires communs d'un patrimoine naturel en souffrance et qu'il faut sauvegarder. Au delà, la biodiversité bouleverse non seulement les rapports que les hommes ont avec la nature mais également les rapports qu'ils ont entre eux dans la mesure où c'est aujourd'hui là, dans cette prise de conscience, que se joue l'avenir de l'humanité.
