Book excerpt: The story of The Magical Owls is about ten little mice who were in search of these Magical Owls to ask them for help to cool off their dry dessert land. These Magical Owls had the power to bring water, or ice with them. In the process of asking for help the Magical Owls both decided to eat them instead. Then a long and hard chase started. The ten mice separated, five went East in search of the Ice Owl, and the remaining five traveled West for the Snow Owl. The chase continued for days with both owls chasing the mice, they hid under rocks, logs, anything possible to escape the great owls powerful claws. The two groups headed towards each other to escape the owls. Until finally the two owls coming in from an attack speed from both directions crashed into each other causing a big thunderstorm with hail, lightning, and cool wind. This crash saved the land, but it also injured one owl. Days later the mountain lion and a wolf tracked down the owl and they brought the owl back with them without eating him, and the little mice who feared the attacking owls decided to help and repair the wing. After the mice repaired the owl the owl promised to fly by once a year to give water, and snow to cool off the dry hot lands.

  • Publisher : Grove/Atlantic, Inc.

Download or read book Matterhorn written by Karl Marlantes and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2010-04-01 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intense, powerful, and compelling, Matterhorn is an epic war novel in the tradition of Norman Mailer’s The Naked and the Dead and James Jones’s The Thin Red Line. It is the timeless story of a young Marine lieutenant, Waino Mellas, and his comrades in Bravo Company, who are dropped into the mountain jungle of Vietnam as boys and forced to fight their way into manhood. Standing in their way are not merely the North Vietnamese but also monsoon rain and mud, leeches and tigers, disease and malnutrition. Almost as daunting, it turns out, are the obstacles they discover between each other: racial tension, competing ambitions, and duplicitous superior officers. But when the company finds itself surrounded and outnumbered by a massive enemy regiment, the Marines are thrust into the raw and all-consuming terror of combat. The experience will change them forever. Written by a highly decorated Marine veteran over the course of thirty years, Matterhorn is a spellbinding and unforgettable novel that brings to life an entire world—both its horrors and its thrills—and seems destined to become a classic of combat literature.

Book Designing World Language Curriculum for Intercultural Communicative Competence

Download or read book Designing World Language Curriculum for Intercultural Communicative Competence written by Jennifer Eddy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-06-16 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book creatively redefines how teacher educators and faculty in secondary and post-secondary language education can become designers with intercultural education in mind. The author aligns theoretical frameworks with practical features for revising the modern language curriculum via themes and novel tasks that transfer language learning from classroom to community, developing communicative competence for mediation and learner autonomy along the way. For novice and experienced instructors alike, this book empowers them to: - design curriculum from transferable concepts that are worthy of understanding and have value within the culture(s) and to the learner; - develop assessments that ask the learner to solve problems, and create products that transfer concepts or address needs of various audiences that they will encounter in community, life, and work; - direct language learners through a spiral, articulated program that supports academic, career and personal goals. Pedagogical features include a glossary of key terms, research-to-practice boxes, scaffolded design tasks, reflection questions and template samples representing language exemplars from the following languages and cultures: Arabic, Chinese, Èdè Yorùbá, French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Ladino, Nahuatl, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, Te Reo Maori and Urdu. The accompanying online resources offer blank templates, PowerPoints and guides for designing bespoke curricula with key performance assessments.

Book A Concordance to Juan Ruiz Libro de Buen Amor

This book was released on 1977-06-30 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents the first concordance of Juan Ruiz's Book of Good Love (Libro de Buen Amor), written in the fourteenth century. The volume's editors, dealing with three slightly different manuscripts, have chosen to meticulously integrate the language from all three editions into one thorough concordance. The result is a significant work that serves as a companion to Ruiz's work that would be vital to any study of medieval Spanish linguistics. In addition to the usual material to be found in a concordance, this book has the following features: the text appears in diplomatic transcription from the manuscripts, for fidelity, while the entry list of words has been partly normalized as for spelling, for convenience; an extensive list of homographs; no omission of high frequency words; frequency list at the end; no reproduction of bulky and difficult computer printout. The book has been photocomposed from the tape.
