Book excerpt: One of the prominent thinkers in the Social Sciences, Aníbal Quijano (1930–2018), has a fundamental work for the compression of contemporary dilemmas since his main theoretical and political concerns have always been linked to the mutations of world capitalism and its reverse paths. This book aims to contribute with analyses of his voluminous and diversified production distributed practically over 60 years of intellectual trajectory. In the first decades, the Peruvian author produced essential works on peasant movements, the urbanization process, and the class structure in Peru and Latin America by mobilizing sociological categories such as marginality, dependency and structural heterogeneity. He devoted himself to investigating imperialist domination in Peru and its implications for social classes and created the journal Sociedad y Política. In the 1990s and 2000s, the Peruvian sociologist published a set of texts on the coloniality and decoloniality of power, which represents a theoretical construction inseparable from the processes and experiences that were occurring in Peru, Latin America and the world, from the “globalization” of “neoliberalism” to global and local resistances. Thus, this book is addressed to all those, with or without specialized training in social sciences, interested in knowing not only the history of social sciences in Latin America but mainly in understanding the historical roots and the political dilemmas of peripheral capitalist societies.

The Shadow of the Baron by American-Argentinian author Laura Lavayén is a memoir of her childhood in Argentina, living on the land of a deceased landholder. The Baron was a fanatic and kept repeating that, if Germany lost the war, he would commit suicide. He did. The Baron starved to death after destroying all his belongings brought from Germany. The only things left, very close to Laura's home, were a pine tree – also brought from Germany – and his grave surrounded by an iron railing. Soon after the Baron's death, people said that his spirit wandered in the area. It is in this environment that the memoir begins, before quickly moving into the difficult childhood that fills the book. Lavayén’s memories of her older half-sister, Caty, a mentally handicapped girl who died very young, her gaucho father who was a storyteller and she loved dearly, and stories of scarcity and lack of understanding, mainly from her mother who never agreed with her behavior, flavor much of the text. The old ranch where the family lived was in the outskirts of beautiful Bariloche. Not far from the place where she used to play with her brothers and sisters, they found broken remains from the former inhabitants in the area, or so they thought. Later on, they learned that they had belonged to the German Baron Ludwig von Bulow. It contains innovative analyses of a selection of short stories from Rulfo's collection, El llano en llamas (1953). It also examines in great depth two of the main characters of Pedro Páramo (1955), Rulfo's masterpiece and only novel. The book shows how Rulfo's works can be read as exercises in irony directed againstthe rhetoric of post-Revolutionary Mexican governments. It also demonstrates the relevance of certain legacies of colony in Rulfo's use of irony. Successive Mexican governments promoted a vision of post-Revolutionary society founded on specific notions of ethnicity, family, nation, education, religion and rural politics. The author combines examination of the speeches, images and newspaper articles which disseminated this vision with incisive literary analyses of Rulfo's work. These analyses are informed both by his original theory of irony, based on "internal" and "external" referents, and by existing postcolonial theories, particularly those of Homi K. Bhabha. Amit Thakkar is a Lecturer in Hispanic Studies at Lancaster University.
