Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Forms of Value and Valuation

Download or read book Forms of Value and Valuation written by Rem B. Edwards and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2014-12-02 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert S. Hartman died an untimely death in 1973. Since then, many of his friends, colleagues, and former students have worked diligently on his formal theory of value and have made important advances in developing both the theory itself and practical applications of it. Those familiar with his work are convinced that he made extraordinary advances in theoretical and applied axiology. Bob Hartman saw the Form of the Good. He laid the foundations for a science of values, still being developed. This book is written by members of the Robert S. Hartman Institute to acquaint others better with his achievements and to forge ahead where he left many problems unresolved. Robert Schirokauer escaped from Nazi Germany in 1933 on a false passport that read "Robert Hartman." He kept the name but later added the "S." He became a prominent and highly innovative philosopher who dedicated his life to resolving problems about human values, as expressed in his own words: "I thought to myself, if evil can be organized so efficiently [by the Nazis] why cannot good? Is there any reason for efficiency to be monopolized by the forces for evil in the world? Why have good people in history never seemed to have had as much power as bad people? I decided I would try to find out why and devote my life to doing something about it."

Download or read book Scientific Humanism written by T. Lothrop Stoddard and published by Blurb. This book was released on 2019-01-09 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author was one of America's foremost racial thinkers, a racial anthropologist, eugenicist, political theorist, and anti-immigration advocate. He wrote more than a dozen books which encompassed topics such as current affairs, history, and race. This is his only philosophical work which argues for a revival of the Renaissance Humanistic ideal of open rational inquiry rather than prejudiced bigotry, combined with an acceptance of the impartial discoveries of modern science, particularly in the realm of race, IQ, and eugenics. This, he says, is the only path to true human happiness. "When [man] has grasped the possibility of a richer, fuller, happier life in such an age, the common man will hearken to the voice of reason rather than to the toxin of passionate emotion." Contents Chapter I: Our Scientific Age Chapter II: Our Unscientific Selves Chapter III: The Perilous Present Chapter IV: Science and Every-Day Life Chapter V: The Split in the Camp of Progress Chapter VI: The Quarrel between "Heart" And "Head" Chapter VII: Science and Religion Chapter VIII: The Hope of Science Chapter IX: Scientific Humanism Index

Book Challenges to the Enlightenment

Download or read book Challenges to the Enlightenment written by Academy of Humanism and published by Prometheus Books. This book was released on 2010-10-05 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Enlightenment was an intellectual movement which began in seventeenth-century Europe and espoused an optimistic project: an end to human ignorance and the slavish adherence to ancient texts and dogma; the application of scientific principles to solving the world's problems; the elimination of inequality between the sexes; and the advocacy of political rights for all citizens. Modern western society, with its democratic institutions and its reliance on science as the basis of technology and industry, is largely an outgrowth of Enlightenment ideals. Yet today the entire Enlightenment agenda is being challenged, not only by members of the religious orthodoxy but also by a group of academics loosely described under the label of "postmodernism". Whereas the Enlightenment project has always been at odds with religious orthodoxy, which has traditionally been suspicious of efforts to achieve human progress without supernatural support, today it must deal with a very different type of attack from postmodernist intellectuals. Critics of this school question the very ability of human reason to grasp objective reality, and they raise serious objections to the reliability and efficiency of the scientific method and the "tyranny of democratic elites". Is the Enlightenment project still worth pursuing? The distinguished members of the Academy of Humanism who have contributed to this important collection of essays are united in their conviction that the ideals of the Enlightenment must be preserved. Editors Paul Kurtz and Timothy J. Madigan have grouped the diverse perspectives represented in this volume into three major sections dealing with philosophical issues, scientific issues, and socialissues. These cogently argued and vigorous responses to traditional and postmodernist criticisms of the Enlightenment make it clear that reason, science, and the political and social ideals of the Enlightenment are indispensable for the welfare and future of our planet.
