Book Converso Non Conformism in Early Modern Spain

Download or read book Converso Non Conformism in Early Modern Spain written by Kevin Ingram and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-12-06 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the effects of Jewish conversions to Christianity in late medieval Spanish society. Ingram focuses on these converts and their descendants (known as conversos) not as Judaizers, but as Christian humanists, mystics and evangelists, who attempt to create a new society based on quietist religious practice, merit, and toleration. His narrative takes the reader on a journey from the late fourteenth-century conversions and the first blood purity laws (designed to marginalize conversos), through the early sixteenth-century Erasmian and radical mystical movements, to a Counter-Reformation environment in which conversos become the advocates for pacifism and concordance. His account ends at the court of Philip IV, where growing intolerance towards Madrid’s converso courtiers is subtly attacked by Spain’s greatest painter, Diego Velázquez, in his work, Los Borrachos. Finally, Ingram examines the historiography of early modern Spain, in which he argues the converso reform phenomenon continues to be underexplored.

Book Dogs on Cape Cod

Download or read book Dogs on Cape Cod written by Kim Roderiques and published by . This book was released on 2015-06-03 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irresistible photographs by one of the Cape's well-known locals, for those who love dogs and love Cape Cod, wherever you are now! DOGS ON CAPE COD will bring back the blissful feeling of those long walks on the Cape with your loving, furry companion, wherever you are right now. Anyone who has ever met Kim Roderiques, even on one occasion, knows of her pure affection, and, quite frankly, her obsession with dogs. Having had dogs throughout her life, it wasn't until Kim reached adulthood that she began to comprehend the incredible gift they give to us. This book began when Kim's dear friend arrived on the Cape with her new puppy, a Cavalier King Charles, named Murphy. From the first moment Kim photographed the puppy, she began to see the Cape in a very different light; she saw it through Murphy's eyes. His wonderment of seeing everything for the very first time, made it evident how much he loved his home. And, with that, the idea was born to publish a book capturing the love that dogs have for this unique environment. DOGS ON CAPE COD conveys the special happiness the Cape has to offer every kind of dog. "It's the sand, it's the water, it's the light, it's the freedom, it's each other," says Kim about dogs and Cape Cod. DOGS ON CAPE COD takes you on a photographic journey through the Cape, witnessing a wide variety of dogs enjoying their very favorite activities in this special place. It features humorous, poignant, and endearing photos of dogs of every age, from puppies to elderly dogs. Whether pure bred or mixed, their importance in our lives always proves to be extraordinary. This book captures the heart and soul of dogs on Cape Cod. You may leave the Cape, but you never leave it behind. Book has 251 color photographs printed on 100# paper

Book Little Novels of Sicily

    Book Details:
  • Author : Giovanni Verga
  • Publisher : Steerforth
  • Release : 2011-03-01
  • ISBN : 1581952414
  • Pages : 139 pages

Download or read book Little Novels of Sicily written by Giovanni Verga and published by Steerforth. This book was released on 2011-03-01 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in a single volume in 1883, the stories collected in Little Novels of Sicily are drawn from the Sicily of Giovanni Verga's childhood, reported at the time to be the poorest place in Europe. Verga's style is swift, sure, and implacable; he plunges into his stories almost in midbreath, and tells them with a stark economy of words. There's something dark and tightly coiled at the heart of each story, an ironic, bitter resolution that is belied by the deceptive simplicity of Verga's prose, and Verga strikes just when the reader's not expecting it. Translator D. H. Lawrence surely found echoes of his own upbringing in Verga's sketches of Sicilian life: the class struggle between property owners and tenants, the relationship between men and the land, and the unsentimental, sometimes startlingly lyric evocation of the landscape. Just as Lawrence veers between loving and despising the industrial North and its people, so too Verga shifts between affection for and ironic detachment from the superstitious, uneducated, downtrodden working poor of Sicily. If Verga reserves pity for anyone or anything, it is the children and the animals, but he doesn't spare them. In his experience, it is the innocents who suffer first and last and always.

Book New Age in Latin America

Download or read book New Age in Latin America written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-06-10 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is at the crossroads where a New Age sensibility, advancing like an ecumen of worldwide spirituality without national, cultural, or ecclesiastical frontiers, meets Latin America's syncretic religions, practiced by groups of people wiht African or indigenous roots or developed from the tradition of popular Catholicism. The Syncretic character of the two sensibilities makes both the New Age and popular religion behave like two, syncretizing and syncreticizable matrices of meaning. This book opens up a rich vein of debate with new dilemmas and discussions, that will provide a framework for a new field of study in anthropology. What new ways of signifying living and experiencing religion is the New Age generating in Latin America? What are its limits? Book Words of the True Peoples Palabras de los Seres Verdaderos

Download or read book Words of the True Peoples Palabras de los Seres Verdaderos written by Carlos Montemayor and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2014-05-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As part of the larger, ongoing movement throughout Latin America to reclaim non-Hispanic cultural heritages and identities, indigenous writers in Mexico are reappropriating the written word in their ancestral tongues and in Spanish. As a result, the long-marginalized, innermost feelings, needs, and worldviews of Mexico's ten to twenty million indigenous peoples are now being widely revealed to the Western societies with which these peoples coexist. To contribute to this process and serve as a bridge of intercultural communication and understanding, this groundbreaking, three-volume anthology gathers works by the leading generation of writers in thirteen Mexican indigenous languages: Nahuatl, Maya, Tzotzil, Tzeltal, Tojolabal, Tabasco Chontal, Purepecha, Sierra Zapoteco, Isthmus Zapoteco, Mazateco, Ñahñu, Totonaco, and Huichol. Volume Two contains poetry by Mexican indigenous writers. Their poems appear first in their native language, followed by English and Spanish translations. Montemayor and Frischmann have abundantly annotated the Spanish, English, and indigenous-language texts and added glossaries and essays that discuss the formal and linguistic qualities of the poems, as well as their place within contemporary poetry. These supporting materials make the anthology especially accessible and interesting for nonspecialist readers seeking a greater understanding of Mexico's indigenous peoples.

Book Emilio Sanchez in New York and Latin America

Download or read book Emilio Sanchez in New York and Latin America written by Victor Deupi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-07-12 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book focuses on the life and artistic activities of Emilio Sanchez (1921–1999) in New York, and Latin America in the 1940s and 1950s. More specifically, the book will consider Sanchez in the wider context of mid-century Cuban artists, and cross-cultural exchange between New York, Cuba, and the Caribbean. The book reflects on why Sanchez chose to be a mobile observer of the American and Caribbean vernacular at a time when such an approach seemed at odds with the mainstream avant-garde. The book includes a foreword by Dr. Ann Koll, former Executive Director/Curator of the Emilio Sanchez Foundation, and an introduction by Dr. Nathan J. Timpano, University of Miami Department of Art and Art History. This book will be of interest to scholars in modern art, Caribbean studies, architectural history, and Latin American and Hispanic studies.
