Book Governments and Civil Society Advancing Climate Agendas

Download or read book Governments and Civil Society Advancing Climate Agendas written by Flavia Milano and published by Inter-American Development Bank. This book was released on 2019-05-21 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The approval of the Paris Agreement in December 2015 established a new global regimen in matters of climate change. Similarly, countries from Latin America and the Caribbean participate in and adhere to additional processes regarding environmental sustainability, including the national development of the 2030 Agenda and the Principle 10 / Escazú Agreement. These 3 instruments, among others, recognize the importance of an effective engagement with Civil Society for the advancement and implementation of the environmental sustainability agreements and goals. With this regional diagnostic study, the IDB Group enhances its knowledge in the subject matter with the technical experience regarding citizen engagement. It sheds light on the perspective of best practices employed by governments for the advancement of their environmental commitments with the contributions of Civil Society in Argentina, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico and Peru. The study had a methodological framework that identifies, systematizes and analyzes best citizen engagement practices for the advancement of governments’ climate and sustainability agendas. It is structured in 3 chapters: (i) a conceptual framework which guides the reader about the methodology, including relevant definitions for the analysis of best engagement practices; (ii) a section containing best engagement practices in the climate and environmental sustainability agendas for each of the 7 countries of the study, with potential of being replicated in other contexts; (iii) a comparative analysis with recommendations and road maps based in the findings of the diagnostic section

Book excerpt: Derived from the renowned multi-volume International Encyclopaedia of Laws, this very useful analysis of constitutional law in Venezuela provides essential information on the country’s sources of constitutional law, its form of government, and its administrative structure. Lawyers who handle transnational matters will appreciate the clarifications of particular terminology and its application. Throughout the book, the treatment emphasizes the specific points at which constitutional law affects the interpretation of legal rules and procedure. Thorough coverage by a local expert fully describes the political system, the historical background, the role of treaties, legislation, jurisprudence, and administrative regulations. The discussion of the form and structure of government outlines its legal status, the jurisdiction and workings of the central state organs, the subdivisions of the state, its decentralized authorities, and concepts of citizenship. Special issues include the legal position of aliens, foreign relations, taxing and spending powers, emergency laws, the power of the military, and the constitutional relationship between church and state. Details are presented in such a way that readers who are unfamiliar with specific terms and concepts in varying contexts will fully grasp their meaning and significance. Its succinct yet scholarly nature, as well as the practical quality of the information it provides, make this book a valuable time-saving tool for both practising and academic jurists. Book Regulation and Social Control of Incivilities

Download or read book Regulation and Social Control of Incivilities written by Nina Persak and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-06-23 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The increasing trend and prevalence of incivilities-targeting punitive regulatory measures across Europe raises important issues regarding the legitimacy, effectiveness and impact of such formal social control. Regulation and Social Control of Incivilities addresses the pertinent issues of current punitive regulation and the social control of incivilities, their trends, criminological explanations, political, spatial, cultural, representational and policing dimensions as well as the underlying behaviour it targets. Part I explores issues surrounding the regulation of incivilities, drawing examples from several European countries including Spain, Italy, Great Britain, Belgium, Slovenia and Hungary. It inspects the legal form and content of the prohibition of incivilities and the social factors that can help explain it, as well as the effectiveness and societal impact of various anti-nuisance measures. Part II focuses on social control and the representation of incivilities, including the construction and control of public nuisance in Belgium, the spatial and cultural aspects of incivilities and of law enforcement against them, the media representations of incivilities in the British and Flemish press, and the intersections between migration and control of incivilities when policing in the Netherlands. This book brings together international scholars to examine the ways in which understudied European countries approach the issue of anti-social behaviour. This multidisciplinary text will be of interest to students, scholars and policymakers concerned with issues of social control, incivilities and criminalisation.

Book The Right to Political Participation

Download or read book The Right to Political Participation written by Gabriella Citroni and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2022-01-28 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comparative analysis of how judgments from the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) and the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACtHR) affect political participation and electoral justice at the national level. Looking at specific countries, the work analyses the legal impact the implementation of the ECtHR and the IACtHR judgments has, with a specific focus on cases in which the regional court concerned uses the “democratic argument,” that is, an argument related to democracy and political rights. The reasoning is that, although democracy is a much wider concept, judgments concerning violations of political rights and electoral justice provide reliable indicators to assess the status and sustainability of democracy in a State. Moreover, the analysis of the violations of political rights and electoral justice allows an in-depth comparison between the two regional human rights systems. Mindful of the broader scope of the fall-out generated by the non-implementation of judgments, including in socio-economic terms, the book includes a section exploring how judgments issued by the ECtHR and the IACtHR affect voters’ participation in the countries under their jurisdiction. To this end, an original dataset including the 47 Member States of the Council of Europe and the 20 countries which recognised the adjudicatory jurisdiction of the IACtHR is built. Multidisciplinary in aim and scope of analysis, the book will be an invaluable resource for researchers, academics, and policy-makers working in the areas of constitutional law, international human rights law, and political economy.

Book An Inquiry into the Existence of Global Values

Download or read book An Inquiry into the Existence of Global Values written by Dennis Davis and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-27 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world appears to be globalising economically, technologically and even, to a halting extent, politically. This process of globalisation raises the possibility of an international legal framework, a possibility which has gained pressing relevance in the wake of the recent global economic crisis. But for any international legal framework to exist, normative agreement between countries, with very different political, economic, cultural and legal traditions, becomes necessary. This work explores the possibility of such a normative agreement through the prism of national constitutional norms. Since 1945, more than a hundred countries have adopted constitutional texts which incorporate, at least in part, a Bill of Rights. These texts reveal significant similarities; the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, for instance, had a marked influence on the drafting of the Bill of Rights for South Africa, New Zealand and Hong Kong as well as the Basic Law of Israel. Similarly, the drafts of Eastern European constitutions reflect significant borrowing from older texts. The essays in this book examine the depth of these similarities; in particular the extent to which textual borrowings point to the development of foundational values in these different national legal systems and the extent of the similarities or differences between these values and the priorities accorded to them. From these national studies the work analyses the rise of constitutionalism since the Second World War, and charts the possibility of a consensus on values which might plausibly underpin an effective and legitimate international legal order.
