Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Legal Certainty and Central Bank Autonomy in Latin American Emerging Markets

Download or read book Legal Certainty and Central Bank Autonomy in Latin American Emerging Markets written by Andrea Lucia Tapia-Hoffmann and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-04-29 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comparative analysis of the legal frameworks of six Latin American central banks to determine whether there is legal certainty regarding central bank autonomy. Based on this, it ascertains whether the way in which legal institutions are designed – specifically those that rule the autonomy of the central bank – provides reasons to believe that central banks can keep inflation at bay even if governments face fiscal problems or pursue contradictory objectives. The analysis covers three key areas: a constitutional analysis, a detailed study of the central bank statutes and a study of a number of underexplored threats to central bank autonomy. After defining and identifying different types of legal certainty and linking them to the credibility of government promises, the author goes on to examine the grounds that the law provides for confidence that central banks operate independently of political influence. The second part of the book focuses on a granular analysis of the legal design of the central banks’ objectives and autonomy. Lastly, the third part features two case studies that represent little-known and unusual institutional threats to legal certainty relating to central bank autonomy, such as the interventions by the Constitutional Court of Colombia in the autonomy of the Colombian central bank, and the interventions of the Argentinean executive and legislative branches in the autonomy of Argentina’s central bank through stabilization plans introduced via emergency laws and decrees. In sum, the book suggests that there are serious doubts about the ability of Latin American central banks to maintain price stability over time. Although central banks were granted a degree of autonomy, authorities in Latin American countries are able to affect central bank decisions. Most importantly, a lack of clarity, inconsistencies, or generous exceptions in the law provide ways for authorities to influence central banks even without bending or disregarding the rules.

Book Beyond restoration ecology social perspectives in Latin America and the Caribbean

Download or read book Beyond restoration ecology social perspectives in Latin America and the Caribbean written by Eliane Ceccon & Daniel Roberto Pérez and published by Eliane Ceccon. This book was released on 2017-09-05 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book invites us to reflect on the restoration of terrestrial ecosystems in the context of a region whose identity is still under construction, Latin America and the Caribbean, immersed in a social, economic, ecological and political crisis, whose roots originate historically and politically in colonialism and in the prevailing model of capital accumulation. For the first time, insights and practical experiences on restoration are gathered from most Latin-American and Caribbean countries. Furthermore, this book offers a social approach to restoration, which will likely become preponderant in this field and in this region. The authors claim that a Latin-American knowledge of restoration is under construction and that this discipline can be a significant tool to empower local populations, which might, in turn, lead to a collective action of change. Case studies from 11 countries of the region were compiled, involving multiple voices that emerge beyond generalist principles and with a bottom-up approach. The main idea of the book is to open a debate about the identity of ecological and social restoration in this region. This book is targeted to restoration specialists, volunteers, environmental managers, researchers, politicians and NGOs working on the complexity of socioecological restoration in a region with unavoidable social problems. It is intended for people with similar concerns to those of the chapters' authors. This work tries to integrate a movement on the rise, almost silent, born with its own narratives of successes and failures that do not hinder its development. Finally, the determination and commitment of Latin-American and Caribbean social actors to restore not only natural values but also social, ethical and cultural ones is remarkable.

Book Handbook of Research on Management Techniques and Sustainability Strategies for Handling Disruptive Situations in Corporate Settings

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Management Techniques and Sustainability Strategies for Handling Disruptive Situations in Corporate Settings written by Perez-Uribe, Rafael and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faced with chaotic environments, it is not possible to make totally efficient forecasts, especially when it is necessary to analyze events with multiple variables and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) constantly face events that escape the laws of the market. The handling that has been given to the crisis caused by the coronavirus has been trial and error, and the economic, social, and environmental results remain to be seen. The markets and the world are chaotic. With the markets in chaos due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it is important to look at the methods used in these environments to promote business success. The Handbook of Research on Management Techniques and Sustainability Strategies for Handling Disruptive Situations in Corporate Settings elaborates on the skills, techniques, and tools that are more useful for these environments and identifies what makes companies that work well in organizational chaos and in chaotic economic environments perform better than companies that are well organized. Covering topics such as strategic management, multidimensional chaos approach, and the global unstable market, this book is essential for managers, executives, academicians, policymakers, entrepreneurs, researchers, undergraduate and graduate business students, and any person interested in state-of-the-art business issues.

Book Truth Justice and Reconciliation in Colombia

Download or read book Truth Justice and Reconciliation in Colombia written by Fabio Andres Diaz Pabon and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-11 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The signing of the peace agreements between the FARC-EP and the Colombian Government in late November 2016 has generated new prospects for peace in Colombia, opening the possibility of redressing the harm inflicted on Colombians by Colombians. Talking about peace and transitional justice requires us to think about how to operationalize peace agreements to promote justice and coexistence for peace. This volume brings together reflections by Colombian academics and practitioners alongside pieces provided by researchers and practitioners in other countries where transitional justice initiatives have taken place (Bosnia and Herzegovina, South Africa, Sri Lanka and Peru). This volume has been written in the south, by the south, for the south. The book engages with the challenges ahead for the coming generations of Colombians. Rivers of ink have dealt with the end goals of transitional justice, but victims require us to take the quest for human rights beyond the normative realm of theorizing justice and into the practical realm of engaging how to implement justice initiatives. The tension between theory—the legislative frameworks guaranteeing human rights—and practice—the realization of these ideas—will frame Colombia’s success (or failure) in consolidating the implementation of the peace agreements with the FARC-EP.
