Download or read book Assessment of the Risk of Amazon Dieback written by Walter Vergara and published by World Bank Publications. This book was released on 2010-11-11 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Amazon basin is a key component of the global carbon cycle. Not only is the old-growth rainforests in the basin huge carbon storage with about 120 billion metric tons of carbon in their biomass, but they also process annually twice the rate of global anthropogenic fossil fuel emissions through respiration and photosynthesis. In addition, the basin is the largest global repository of biodiversity and produces about 20 percent of the world s flow of fresh water into the oceans. Despite the large CO2 efflux from recent deforestation, the Amazon rainforest is still considered to be a net carbon sink or reservoir because vegetation growth on average exceeds mortality. However, current climate trends and human-induced deforestation may be transforming forest structure and behavior. Amazon forest dieback would be a massive event, affecting all life-forms that rely on this diverse ecosystem, including humans, and producing ramifications for the entire planet. Clearly, with changes at a global scale at stake, there is a need to better understand the risk, and dynamics of Amazon dieback. Therefore, the purpose of the book is to assist in understanding the risk, process and dynamics of potential Amazon dieback and its implications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1988 reference book provides the major economic and social statistical series for the British Isles from the twelfth century up until 1980-81. The text provides informed access to a wide range of economic data, without the labour of identifying sources or of transforming many different annual sources into a comparable time series.
Download or read book Energy Management Supply and Conservation written by Clive Beggs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-06-25 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more and more concern being expressed over the Earth's dwindling energy resources as well as rising pollution levels, the subject of energy management and conservation is becoming increasingly important. Over half of all energy consumed is used in buildings so effective management of buildings whether commercial or domestic is vital. This book is a comprehensive text dealing with the theory and practice of the supply of energy to consumers, energy management and auditing and energy saving technology. It will be a core text on courses on energy management and building services, as well as updating professionals in the building sector.
Download or read book The European Emission Trading System and Its Followers written by Simone Borghesi and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-04-16 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given the rapid spread of ETSs in an increasing number of countries and the important role that they are likely to play for the success or failure of the environmental policy in the years to come, this book provides an interdisciplinary analysis of the EU ETS from both the legal and economic perspectives comparing it with the other main ETSs existing worldwide, in order to assess whether the EU ETS has truly represented a prototype for the other ETSs established around the world and to investigate the current perspectives for linking them in the future.Through the years, the EU ETS has progressively gained a paramount position within the EU environmental policy and climate change legislation and currently represents the most striking flagship in this sector, with more than 11.000 installations covered by the scheme. In parallel, the EU ETS has paved the way for the establishment of many other ETSs in several other jurisdictions. Such schemes are now recognized worldwide as the “cornerstones” of the climate change policy.
Download or read book Modeling in Materials Processing written by Jonathan A. Dantzig and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-11-12 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mathematical modeling and computer simulation are useful tools for improving materials processing. While courses in materials processing have covered modeling, they have been devoted to one particular class of materials--polymers, metals, or ceramics. This text offers a new approach, presenting an integrated treatment of metallic and non-metallic materials. The authors show that a common base of knowledge--specifically, the fundamentals of heat transfer and fluid mechanics--unifies these seemingly disparate areas. They emphasize understanding basic physical phenomena and knowing how to include them in a model. The book also includes selected numerical methods, a wealth of practical, realistic examples, and homework exercises.

Download or read book Modeling of Casting Welding and Advanced Solidification Processes written by Steve L. Cockcroft and published by Wiley-TMS. This book was released on 2009-06-07 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These proceedings encapsulate the progress made in modeling casting processes and liquid-solid phase transformations over the years. The papers presented provide a clear picture of the modeling activities for processes involving solidification, covering continuous casting, welding, remelting, semi-solid, and shape and ingot casting processes. Other topics related to casting technologies, such as liquid metal treatment and casting tools (e.g., mold manufacturing and life time), are also examined. These proceedings bring together leading academic research that brings up to date information from the industry. Classical studies of structure and segregation formed upon solidification as well as new in-situ observation techniques are addressed. A collection of papers from the 12th International Conference held in Vancouver, British Columbia June 7th-14th, 2009.
