Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A bilingual edition of poems by the award-winning Spanish poet. Pere Gimferrer has been writing poetry for more than fifty years in several languages, restoring and expanding upon avant-garde tendencies in poetry that had been abandoned in Spain after the Spanish Civil War. Of his second book, The Sea Aflame, Octavio Paz wrote: “Our language will be, already is, larger by one poet.” In 1970, with Mirrors, Gimferrer turned to Catalan, his mother tongue. Since then, he has won major Catalan and Spanish prizes for his work, which, along with poetry, includes writings on film and art history, translations, and novels. This bilingual volume, the first to draw on all phases of Gimferrer’s career as a poet—from Message from the Tetrarch, published when he was eighteen, to selections from his recent verses in Italian—is an ideal introduction to a writer who, in the words of Roberto Bolaño, “is a great poet and also knows everything.”

For the moors of Al-Andalus in the south, it is the beginning of a bitter harvest. And Far west, a new world beckons..... Glorious descriptions of battles and conflicts, the horrors of the Spanish Inquisition, the tracing of historical events leading to the entrance of the Catholic monarchs in Granada in 1492, a panoply of characters, profiles of the traditions and skills of the Muslim peasants in Al-Andalus, and finally the first voyage of Christopher Columbus to the Indies, make this book a unique treasure. Howard Headworth lives in Almeria, Spain, for twenty years. He was born in Wales and studied geology at the university there and in London. He uses his great experience as a scientific director as well as his passion for the history of his adopted country in this historical novel.

Book Intimations of Modernity

  • Author : Louis A. Pérez Jr.
  • Publisher : UNC Press Books
  • Release : 2017-01-11
  • ISBN : 1469631318
  • Pages : 271 pages

Download or read book Intimations of Modernity written by Louis A. Pérez Jr. and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2017-01-11 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Louis A. Perez Jr.'s new history of nineteenth-century Cuba chronicles in fascinating detail the emergence of an urban middle class that was imbued with new knowledge and moral systems. Fostering innovative skills and technologies, these Cubans became deeply implicated in an expanding market culture during the boom in sugar production and prior to independence. Contributing to the cultural history of capitalism in Latin America, Perez argues that such creoles were cosmopolitans with powerful transnational affinities and an abiding identification with modernity. This period of Cuban history is usually viewed through a political lens, but Perez, here emphasizing the character of everyday life within the increasingly fraught colonial system, shows how moral, social, and cultural change that resulted from market forces also contributed to conditions leading to the collapse of the Spanish colonial administration. Perez highlights women's centrality in this process, showing how criollas adapted to new modes of self-representation as a means of self-fulfillment. Increasing opportunities for middle-class women's public presence and social participation was both cause and consequence of expanding consumerism and of women's challenges to prevailing gender hierarchies. Seemingly simple actions--riding a bicycle, for example, or deploying the abanico, the fan, in different ways--exposed how traditional systems of power and privilege clashed with norms of modernity and progress.
