Book El arte espa ol entre Roma y Par s siglos XVIII y XIX

Download or read book El arte espa ol entre Roma y Par s siglos XVIII y XIX written by Luis Sazatornil Ruiz and published by Casa de Velázquez. This book was released on 2014-07-24 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book New Perspectives on the History of Facial Hair

Download or read book New Perspectives on the History of Facial Hair written by Jennifer Evans and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together a range of scholars from diverse disciplinary backgrounds to re-examine the histories of facial hair and its place in discussions of gender, the military, travel and art, amongst others. Chapters in the first section of the collection explore the intricate history of beard wearing and shaving, including facial hair fashions in long historical perspective, and the depiction of beards in portraiture. Section Two explores the shifting meanings of the moustache, both as a manly symbol in the nineteenth century, and also as the focus of the material culture of personal grooming. The final section of the collection charts the often-complex relationship between men, women and facial hair. It explores how women used facial hair to appropriate masculine identity, and how women’s own hair was read as a sign of excessive and illicit sexuality.

Download or read book Old Masters Worldwide written by Susanna Avery-Quash and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a result of the Napoleonic wars, vast numbers of Old Master paintings were released on to the market from public and private collections across continental Europe. The knock-on effect was the growth of the market for Old Masters from the 1790s up to the early 1930s, when the Great Depression put an end to its expansion. This book explores the global movement of Old Master paintings and investigates some of the changes in the art market that took place as a result of this new interest. Arguably, the most important phenomenon was the diminishing of the traditional figure of the art agent and the rise of more visible, increasingly professional, dealerships; firms such as Colnaghi and Agnew's in Britain, Goupil in France and Knoedler in the USA, came into existence. Old Masters Worldwide explores the ways in which the pioneering practices of such businesses contributed to shape a changing market.

Download or read book Arte espa ol de la Ilustraci n y del siglo XIX written by José Enrique García Melero and published by Encuentro. This book was released on 1998-01-14 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Luca Giordano at the Museo Nacional Del Prado

Download or read book Luca Giordano at the Museo Nacional Del Prado written by Andrés Úbeda de los Cobos and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of the huge number of paintings by this artist in the Prado, Luca Giordano (Naples, 1634-1705) is seldom studied and is therefore little known to the public, who often do not see beyond the cliché of his prodigious speed of execution. The present volume sets out to remedy this lack of knowledge. It begins with three introductory essays that set the Prado paintings in the context of Giordano's life, survey the painter's critical fortunes from his own time to the present day, and provide information on his Spanish period, which lasted from 1692 to 1702. These initial texts also look into specific issues, among them Giordano's relationship with his dealers, and more controversial aspects such as the commercial strategies he used to disseminate his work. The second part of the book "the catalogue raisonné proper" consists of entries for each of the paintings studied, including information on their provenance, condition, restoration history, related literature, iconography, visual sources and critical fortunes. It features a total of 99 paintings executed on different supports and in various media which span all the stages of his production except the period following his return to Naples in 1702. This catalogue is the result of many years of thorough research conducted by its author, Andrés Úbeda de los Cobos, Deputy Director for Conservation and Research at the Museo del Prado. He is a specialist on Luca Giordano and has published various articles and books on the artist's works, such as a study on the fresco of the Apotheosis of the Spanish Monarchy in the Casón del Buen Retiro in 2008, a project which, in a sense, has been brought to a successful completion by this book.

Book Pintores espa oles en Par s 1850 1900

Download or read book Pintores espa oles en Par s 1850 1900 written by González López González and published by Tusquets Editores, S.A.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

    Book Details:
  • Author : Carlos González

Download or read book Pintores espa oles en Roma written by Carlos González and published by Tusquets Editores, S.A.. This book was released on 1987 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Inventing the Art Collection

Download or read book Inventing the Art Collection written by Oscar E. Vázquez and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The pace and scale of the exchange of cultural goods of all sorts&—paintings, furniture, even ladies' fans&—increased sharply in nineteenth-century Spain, and new institutions and practices for exhibiting as well as valorizing &"art&" were soon formed. Oscar V&ázquez maps this cultural landscape, tracing the connections between the growth of art markets and changing patterns of collecting. Unlike many earlier students of collecting, he focuses not upon questions of taste but rather upon the discursive and institutional frameworks that came to regulate art's economic and symbolic worth at all levels of Spanish society. Drawing upon sources that range from newspaper reviews to notarial documents, V&ázquez shows how collecting acquired the power to mediate debates over individual, regional, and national identity. His book also looks at the emergence of a new state apparatus for arts administration and situates these social and political changes in the broader European context. Inventing the Art Collection will be of interest to historians and sociologists of Spain and Europe, as well as art historians and cultural theorists.

Book Returns to Pompeii

Download or read book Returns to Pompeii written by Shelley Hales and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a series of case studies that trace the ways in which audiences across Europe have attempted to return to Pompeii by emulating its interior decorations since the city?s rediscovery in the mid-eighteenth century. As such, it is about both the impact of Pompeian antiquity on the present and the reception in the present of that antique past, exploring the variety of ways in which Pompeian domestic space and decoration have been revived (and for what purposes and audiences). The contributions to the volumes compare the ways in which Pompeian wall decorations were interpreted and adapted, given new context and put to serve new social and political purposes, both close to their place of discovery, in the Kingdom of Naples, and in the far-off European periphery, represented by Denmark and Sweden.

Book London and the Emergence of a European Art Market 1780 1820

Download or read book London and the Emergence of a European Art Market 1780 1820 written by Susanna Avery-Quash and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2019-08-06 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Showcasing diverse methodologies, this volume illuminates London's central role in the development of a European art market at the turn of the nineteenth century. In the late 1700s, as the events of the French Revolution roiled France, London displaced Paris as the primary hub of international art sales. Within a few decades, a robust and sophisticated art market flourished in London. London and the Emergence of a European Art Market, 1780–1820 explores the commercial milieu of art sales and collecting at this turning point. In this collection of essays, twenty-two scholars employ methods ranging from traditional art historical and provenance studies to statistical and economic analysis; they provide overviews, case studies, and empirical reevaluations of artists, collectors, patrons, agents and dealers, institutions, sales, and practices. Drawing from pioneering digital resources—notably the Getty Provenance Index—as well as archival materials such as trade directories, correspondence, stock books and inventories, auction catalogs, and exhibition reviews, these scholars identify broad trends, reevaluate previous misunderstandings, and consider overlooked commercial contexts. From individual case studies to econometric overviews, this volume is groundbreaking for its diverse methodological range that illuminates artistic taste and flourishing art commerce at the turn of the nineteenth century.
