Book excerpt: In spite of the huge number of paintings by this artist in the Prado, Luca Giordano (Naples, 1634-1705) is seldom studied and is therefore little known to the public, who often do not see beyond the cliché of his prodigious speed of execution. The present volume sets out to remedy this lack of knowledge. It begins with three introductory essays that set the Prado paintings in the context of Giordano's life, survey the painter's critical fortunes from his own time to the present day, and provide information on his Spanish period, which lasted from 1692 to 1702. These initial texts also look into specific issues, among them Giordano's relationship with his dealers, and more controversial aspects such as the commercial strategies he used to disseminate his work. The second part of the book "the catalogue raisonné proper" consists of entries for each of the paintings studied, including information on their provenance, condition, restoration history, related literature, iconography, visual sources and critical fortunes. It features a total of 99 paintings executed on different supports and in various media which span all the stages of his production except the period following his return to Naples in 1702. This catalogue is the result of many years of thorough research conducted by its author, Andrés Úbeda de los Cobos, Deputy Director for Conservation and Research at the Museo del Prado. He is a specialist on Luca Giordano and has published various articles and books on the artist's works, such as a study on the fresco of the Apotheosis of the Spanish Monarchy in the Casón del Buen Retiro in 2008, a project which, in a sense, has been brought to a successful completion by this book.

Muchos de ellos obtendrían allí un importante éxito, llegando a ejercer una influencia equiparable en ocasiones a la de los más reputados maestros de la época. Vinculados en su mayoría a las tendencias academicistas, el empuje de las vanguardias los sumió, ya entrado el siglo XX, en un prolongado olvido. El conjunto de su obra, sin embargo, no puede ser desestimado, pues, en su nutrida diversidad, ofrece valores propios de gran calidad y constituye el sustrato sobre el que iba a germinar la que luego se conocería como “escuela española de París”. Propósito principal de este libro es censar y reseñar, dando a conocer algunas de sus obras más representativas, a un amplio número de pintores españoles que, durante temporadas más o menos largas, residieron en París a lo largo de la segunda mitad del siglo XIX. Salvando notorias excepciones, estos pintores conocieron en su mayoría, ya entrando el siglo XX, un prolongado olvido, del que no hace mucho empiezan a ser rescatados. El conjunto de su obra, sin embargo, no puede ser desdeñado, pues testimonia acerca de un período de extraordinaria vitalidad en la historia de la pintura española, objeto por aquel entonces de una profunda renovación debida en gran medida a la poderosa influencia ejercida por la capital francesa. Este libro se propone contribuir al estudio y a la clarificación de dicho período, sirviéndose de un extenso caudal de informaciones inéditas y apoyándose en un importante conjunto de ilustraciones.

La presencia de Eduardo Rosales y Mariano Fortuny en la Ciudad Eterna, desde 1857 y 1858 respectivamente, marca un hito en el desarrollo de la pintura española. Los adelantos técnicos de estos dos pintores a partir de la década de los años sesenta, así como sus éxitos internacionales, animaron a sus compañeros y a los artistas de las siguientes generaciones a trasladarse a Italia. Según afirma el crítico italiano de la época, Diego Angeli, en Le cronache del Caffè Greco, los españoles, durante el período 1865-1885, fueron árbitros del ambiente pictórico romano, al extremo de que los salones más exclusivos les abrieron sus puertas. Fueron ellos quienes monopolizaron la mayor parte del mercado artístico extranjero, hasta el punto de incitar a los artistas italianos a crear nuevas escuelas para contrarrestar el éxito español. Tras décadas de injustificado olvido, vuelve a despertarse, con creciente interés, la atención hacia la que, retrospectivamente, ha sido denominada “escuela española de Roma”. Este libro pretende contribuir al redescubrimiento de uno de los más brillantes períodos del arte español dando a conocer algunas de sus obras más representativas, y menos conocidas, trazando sus características y estableciendo además un nutrido censo de pintores españoles que visitaron Roma en la segunda mitad del siglo XIX.
