Book The Marrow of Human Experience

Download or read book The Marrow of Human Experience written by William Albert Wilson and published by . This book was released on 2006-09-30 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Composed over several decades, the essays here are remarkably fresh and relevant. They offer instruction for the student just beginning the study of folklore as well as repeated value for the many established scholars who continue to wrestle with issues that Wilson has addressed. As his work has long offered insight on critical matters—nationalism, genre, belief, the relationship of folklore to other disciplines in the humanities and arts, the currency of legend, the significance of humor as a cultural expression, and so forth—so his recent writing, in its reflexive approach to narrative and storytelling, illuminates today’s paradigms. Its notable autobiographical dimension, long an element of Wilson’s work, employs family and local lore to draw conclusions of more universal significance. Another way to think of it is that newer folklorists are catching up with Wilson and what he has been about for some time. As a body, Wilson’s essays develop related topics and connected themes. This collection organizes them in three coherent parts. The first examines the importance of folklore—what it is and its value in various contexts. Part two, drawing especially on the experience of Finland, considers the role of folklore in national identity, including both how it helps define and sustain identity and the less savory ways it may be used for the sake of nationalistic ideology. Part three, based in large part on Wilson’s extensive work in Mormon folklore, which is the most important in that area since that of Austin and Alta Fife, looks at religious cultural expressions and outsider perceptions of them and, again, at how identity is shaped, by religious belief, experience, and participation; by the stories about them; and by the many other expressive parts of life encountered daily in a culture. Each essay is introduced by a well-known folklorist who discusses the influence of Wilson’s scholarship. These include Richard Bauman, Margaret Brady, Simon Bronner, Elliott Oring, Henry Glassie, David Hufford, Michael Owen Jones, and Beverly Stoeltje.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, first published in 2001, presents a portrait of Jean Sibelius as composer and man, a figure of national and international significance, patriot, husband and father. Three introductory articles explore Sibelius's reception in Finland, performance practice and recording history, and Sibelius's aesthetic position with regard to modernity. The second group of essays examines issues of ideology, sexuality and mythology, and their relationship to musical structure and compositional genesis. Studies of the Second, Fourth, Sixth, and Seventh Symphonies are presented in the concluding section. Collectively, these articles address historical, theoretical and analytical issues in Sibelius's most important works. The analyses are supported by investigations of Sibelius's compositional process as documented by the manuscripts and sketches primarily in the Sibelius Collection of the Helsinki University Library. Exploring Sibelius's innovative approach to tonality, form and texture, the book delineates his unique brand of modernism, which has proven highly influential in the late twentieth century.

Book Hanslick on the Musically Beautiful

Download or read book Hanslick on the Musically Beautiful written by Geoffrey Payzant and published by Cybereditions Corporation. This book was released on 2003-05 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The sixteen lectures by Geoffrey Payzant in this volume are all about one little book by Eduard Hanslick, Vom Musikalisch-Sch?nen - On the Musically Beautiful. Published at Prague in 1854 and a mere 104 pages, VMS ran to ten German editions and many translations in Hanslick's lifetime (he died in 1904). One may agree or disagree with its arguments and conclusions, but there is no denying that musical aesthetics as we know it has been given shape and direction by this small classic. Payzant's lectures examine aspects of the Hanslick debate which have received less attention than they deserve. In particular, they offer a fresh look at Hanslick's use of the German words Ton (tone) and Gef?hl (feeling).

Book Masters of Russian Music

  • Publisher : Faber & Faber
  • Release : 2013-04-18
  • ISBN : 0571302823
  • Pages : 386 pages

Download or read book Masters of Russian Music written by Gerald Abraham and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2013-04-18 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1936, Calvocoressi's and Abraham's study was the first complete account of its subject to appear in any language, including Russian, and was based on a large amount of original first-hand research. Over 75 years later Masters of Russian Music retains its power - as any study of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky, Rimsky-Korsakof, Scriabin, Borodin et al really ought to, since these were composers whose extraordinary musical accomplishments still left room in their lives for all manner of other interesting (and sometimes eccentric) activities. The portraits in this volume are scholarly, authoritative, and highly lively - as befitting the eminent talents under discussion.
